John Olsen gifts painting to Mosman Art Gallery - March 2015
Esteemed Australian artist John Olsen AO OBE has gifted a new painting of Sydney Harbour to the Mosman Art Collection. Titled, The Rolling Sea and that Streeton Painting, this new work is a significant acquisition for the Gallery, the municipality of Mosman and for the greater audiences of Sydney.
Olsen’s painting was inspired by Arthur Streeton’s iconic Sydney Harbour 1895, currently on view in the Balnaves Gift. Philanthropist Neil Balnaves AO donated the Streeton, along with a further fifteen Australian Impressionist paintings that depict the Mosman area, to the Gallery in 2012.
John Olsen was stimulated into painting his new work after receiving the original invitation to the launch event for the Balnaves Gift – as the Streeton was reproduced on the invitation cover. So enthused by this Streeton work, Olsen made immediate arrangements to view the classic painting and promised to paint a new artwork for the Gallery’s Collection in response. “I want to paint a conversation with it”, Olsen told Mosman Art Gallery Director, John Cheeseman.
John Olsen went on to write in a letter to John Cheeseman and the Gallery: The painting is an evocation of memory. As students at the Julian Ashton Art School we would delight to take the Manly Ferry when the sea was rough. Round about Balmoral the ferry would roll and the turbulent sea would wash over the deck. How exciting, what fun. The Streeton painting evokes that – notice how the ferry is riding the turbulent sea. When I saw it at the Mosman Gallery, how supremely it is and confirms our experience today. ‘The Rolling Sea…’ confirms and emphasises that experience, it is an all at once world. I can think of no better place for it than to be near Streeton’s painting of 1895 and how that same circumstance can be viewed today.
John Olsen’s name is widely associated with his interpretation of the Australian landscape and of Sydney Harbour. Olsen has lived and worked extensively overseas, but his commitment and sensitivity to Australia, in particular to Sydney and its Harbour surrounds has remained strong throughout his practice.
The Rolling Sea and that Streeton Painting was unveiled at Mosman Art Gallery on 19 March 2015 with special guest comments from Dr Michael Brand, Director of Art Gallery of New South Wales and John Olsen were in attendance. Also in attendance was Her Excellency Professor The Honourable Dame Marie Bashir AD CVO, who officially opened The Balnaves Gift at Mosman Art Gallery in 2012.
The Rolling Sea and that Streeton Painting by John Olsen will sit aside Arthur Streeton’s Sydney Harbour 1895 in the Balnaves Gift at Mosman Art Gallery until further notice.

National Reconciliation Week - 27 May to 3 June
It is a time to celebrate and build on the relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians.
The Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife is raising awareness of the week-long event and encouraging all Australians to join the reconciliation conversation and reflect on our shared histories, contributions and achievements.
On the 20th May, the Foundation hosted the opening of an Aboriginal Art Exhibition, How Ironic, at the Soldiers Institute Mosman, Sydney Harbour National Park. Artworks came from a range of famous Aboriginal artists including the owners of the collection -- Gordon and his wife Elaine Syron.
Reconciliation Week is about showing respect for cultural difference as a fundamental responsibility we owe each other. said Susanna Bradshaw, MC of the exhibition and CEO of the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife.
The Hon Philip Ruddock officially opened the exhibition. Other special guest speakers included;
• John Morse AM, Indigenous Tourism Advisor and former CEO of Tourism Australia
• Dr Jeff McMullen, ABC 60 Minutes, Director Ian Thorpe Foundation and patron
• Adrian Newstead, Coo-ee Aboriginal Art Gallery since 1982
• Magistrate Brian Lulham
• Millie Ingram, CEO of Wyanga Older Peoples Home, Redfern
• Adam Hill
• Michelle Lovegrove, SBS Aboriginal Unit
• Shane Mortimer,
• Steve Miller, Manager of Aboriginal sector development for Museums & Galleries NSW, past curator of Powerhouse Museum.
By bringing together an inspiring group of speakers to highlight the need for a National Aboriginal Art Centre (NAAC), it is hoped that the collections of Shane Mortimer, Val Lhuede and the Syrons can come together to form the basis of the NACC. she said.
Australia is home to a National Art Gallery, and there are Contemporary Art galleries in every state but Australia has never had an art gallery dedicated to Aboriginal art, Australia's original art form and true art history. said Ms Bradshaw.
Supporting projects like this that preserve, protect and share the unique stories of Australia's history is an important aspect of the Foundation's conservation work, said Ms Bradshaw.
The famous David Gulpilil portrait - an Archibald entry in 1988 and Judgement by his Peers were on exhibition as were a collection of traditional and urban artworks and sculptures.
A permanent home for displaying these artworks is yet to be found, but various sites around Sydney Harbour were suggested from Garden to Goat Island (MeMel). Member for Wagga Wagga -- Daryl Maguire, has been a keen supporter and advisor to the Syrons for many years and is spearheading the campaign to find this growing collection of Aboriginal history a home -- described by many including Adrian Newstead as the most important art collection in Australia.
