Flying Through the Mountains in Alaska
The flight back from Pybus Point Lodge
Alaska Aviation History (1978)
Excerpt from Alaska Review 11. In this segment, Alaska Review reports on early Alaska aviation, with photos and film clips of Alaska pioneer aviators and their aircraft. The report leads into a discussion of current air routes and the controversies surrounding air service to bush communities in Alaska. (Sound/Color/2-inch quad videotape).
Airing from 1976 to 1987, Alaska Review was the first statewide public affairs television program in Alaska. The show was designed to explore public policy issues confronting Alaska, and to assist citizens in making decisions about the future of their land. Produced by Independent Public Television, Inc., (IPTV), the series eventually consisted of 16 one-hour shows, 46 half-hour shows, and one three-hour special broadcast. Funded through the Alaska Humanities Forum and State of Alaska, the series won multiple awards for public service and educational programming. IPTV dissolved in 1988. Videotapes for all finished productions and raw footage were later moved to the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), where they became housed with the Alaska Film Archives, a unit of the Alaska and Polar Regions Collections & Archives department in the Rasmuson Library at UAF, shortly after the unit was founded in 1993. The Alaska Film Archives is currently seeking funding to preserve and digitize all of the original full interviews gathered in the making of the Alaska Review series. Copies of finished productions are also held by Alaska State Library Historical Collections in Juneau. For more information, please contact the Alaska Film Archives at University of Alaska Fairbanks.
This sequence contains excerpts from AAF-4956 from the Alaska Review collection held by the Alaska Film Archives, a unit of the Alaska and Polar Regions Collections & Archives Department in the Elmer E. Wreckage of plane which crashed killing five passengers and pilot
1. Wide shot, rescue workers
2. Pan down mountain to wreckage of plane
3. Pull out from crash site
4. Various rescue workers and crash site
5. Pull out from Coast Guard helicopter
STORYLINE:
A sightseeing plane ferrying tourists crashed near Glacier Bay National Park, killing six people.
Four of the passengers were German tourists, and one was a Canadian, according to Alaska State Troopers.
The pilot was an American.
The Cherokee Six plane operated by LAB Flying Service of Haines took off from Skagway about 2 pm on Monday.
A search was launched when the single-engine plane didn't return by 5 pm.
The Coast Guard homed in on an emergency beacon at the 5,000-foot (1,500-metre) level of the Davidson Glacier, about 12 miles (19 kilometers) south of Haines near Glacier Bay National Park, south of Juneau.
Two Coast Guard helicopters were despatched with a rescue team from Juneau Mountain Rescue that landed at the crash site.
There were no signs of survivors.
The crash was not the first for LAB - in July of 1995, another LAB Cherokee Six slammed into a mountainside above Pyramid Harbor, a few miles (kilometres) north of Monday's crash site, also killing six.
Investigators said that crash was caused by pilot error.
A LAB Piper PA-32 crashed into the very same Davidson Glacier in September of 1996, injuring two people seriously, one of them from Germany.
Four others on the aircraft had only minor injuries.
A Cherokee Six operated by LAB also crashed on Admiralty Island on a flight from Juneau to Kake in October 1997, two died in that crash.
LAB has about three dozen planes operating across Southeast Alaska.
The company's business operations are in Haines and flight operations are based in Juneau.

Shrinking Glaciers: Rhode Island and Alaska's Glaciers
What do the largest and smallest states in the USA have in common?
Mike Loso shares some concluding information from the recent NPS study on glaciers in Alaska's National Parks. Glaciers are enormous and dynamic features of Alaska’s parks. Many are shrinking―retreating from their terminus―yet some glaciers appear surprisingly stable and a few are actually advancing (surging).
Recently, we completed a comprehensive inventory of the glaciers in our parks by remapping 7012 distinct modern glaciers that are contained wholly or at least partly within the boundaries of nine Alaskan National Park units. This updated status of glaciers allows us to better understand changes in their extent and volume since they were last mapped in the 1950s and 1960s. For the detailed report, visit
Stay tuned for more videos about the changes scientists document and communities witness in glaciers across Alaska National Parks!

SUMMARY
=======
Alaska ( (listen); Aleut: Alax̂sxax̂; Inupiaq: Alaskaq; Russian: Аляска, translit. Alyaska) is a U.S. state in the northwest extremity of North America. The Canadian administrative divisions of British Columbia and Yukon border the state to the east, its most extreme western part is Attu Island, and it has a maritime border with Russia (Chukotka Autonomous Okrug) to the west across the Bering Strait. To the north are the Chukchi and Beaufort seas—the southern parts of the Arctic Ocean. The Pacific Ocean lies to the south and southwest. It is the largest state in the United States by area and the
seventh largest subnational division in the world. In addition, it is the 3rd least populous and the most sparsely populated of the 50 United States; nevertheless, it is by far the most populous territory located mostly north of the 60th parallel in North America: its population—estimated at 738,432 by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2015— is more than quadruple the combined populations of Northern Canada and Greenland. Approximately half of Alaska's residents live within the Anchorage metropolitan area. Alaska's economy is dominated by the fishing, natural gas, and oil industries, resources which it has in abundance. Military bases and tourism are also a significant part of the economy.
The United States purchased Alaska from the Russian Empire on March 30, 1867, for 7.2 million U.S. dollars at approximately two cents per acre ($4.74/km2). The area went through several administrative changes before becoming organized as a territory on May 11, 1912. It was admitted as the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959.

Helene and Richard Kurtz at Alaska's Misty Fjords - Alaska's Misty Fjords Movie 3
This is Alaska's Misty Fjord. It's not supposed to be sunny here, ever! But, we got lucky. What a wonderful time. It's really beautiful.
From Wikipedia:
Misty Fiords National Monument (or Misty Fjords National Monument) is a National Monument and Wilderness Area administered by the US Department of Agriculture United States Forest Service 40 miles east of Ketchikan, Alaska, along the Inside Passage coast in extreme southeastern Alaska and covering 2,294,343 acres (9,246 km2) of Tongass National Forest in Alaska's Panhandle. All but 151,832 acres (614 km2) is designated Wilderness National Monument; Congress reserved the Non-wilderness National Monument area for the Quartz Hill molybdenum deposit, possibly the largest such mineral deposit in the world. The national monument was originally proclaimed by President Jimmy Carter in December 1978 as Misty Fiords National Monument, using the authorization of the Antiquities Act and became a part of an ongoing political struggle between the federal government and the State of Alaska over land use policy and authority that finally led to the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act in 1980. In that law, it was statutorily established as Misty Fjords National Monument.
The area is called The Yosemite of the North for its similar geology. Light-colored granite, about 50 to 70 million years old (Eocene Epoch to Cretaceous Period) has been sculpted by glaciers that gouged deep U-shaped troughs throughout the monument. Many of the glacial valleys are filled with sea water and are called canals, but they are not man-made in any way; the walls of these valleys are near-vertical and often rise 2,000 to 3,000 feet (600 to 900 m) above sea level, and drop 1,000 feet (300 m) below it.
Across from the Salmon River and Portland Canal and the settlement of Hyder, Alaska, small glaciers occupy high areas of the northeast part of the monument. Soule and Through Glaciers cover high plateaus and valleys in the Lincoln and Seward Mountains, where one peak rises to 6,250 feet (1,900 m) above sea level. Most mountain tops in the monument are in the 4,000 to 5,000 foot (1,200 to 1,500 m) elevation range. Tree line is usually around 2,700 feet (800 m).
