The Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Alpine Tramping (Hiking) Series | New Zealand
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of the most incredible day walks in the world. Although beautiful, it can be dangerous if you are not fully prepared to enter an alpine environment. Extreme weather, terrain and distance have resulted in this track having the highest number of search and rescues for trampers in New Zealand. This video takes you through the entire track and shows you how to prepare for a successful day out so that you make it home safely.

Mt Doom Trek - Tongariro Alpine Crossing (Tongariro National Park)
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of those must walks of New Zealand. However being New Zealand most winter visitors miss the chance of doing it, because of weather conditions on the mountains. We nearly were one of those visitors who never got a chance to do the crossing. But on my last full day and one of my friend Lucy's last days, the rain cleared and the crossing was open. So on the morning 30th, September we were picked up early from our hostel and dropped at Mangatepopo Carpark, at the start of the Alpine Crossing. The crop was also the film set of Mt Doom from the Lord of the Rings films and Mt Ngauruhoe is nicknamed as Mt Doom.
The crossing is a one way 19.4km trek across the alpine pass of Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngaurahoe. The Department of Conservation class the walk as an advanced trek and recommended between 5hr and 30mins to 7hr 30mins. It took us 6 hours to complete the crossing.
So the route starts at the Mangatepopo Carpark and heads towards Mt Ngaurahoe along the Mangatepopo valley. The first section to the devils staircase is fairly flat, with a small incline. The path is well marked out in the valley and includes a couple of boardwalks. Along with this section, you can see all three of the largest peaks in the national park, Mt Ruapehu, Mt Ngaurahoe and Mt Tongariro. You can also see the glacial landscape that formed the valley and the lava flows that have filled it. Then finally before you start the devils staircase you can see and smell the soda springs. Next head up the step Devils Staircase to the top of the South Crater. Once you arrive at the top, you are able to look back down onto the Mangatepopo Valley and see the signpost for the path to the summit of Mt Ngaurahoe.
The next section has you crossing the South Crater and heading up the ridge towards the summit of the Red Crater. The ridge climb to the top of the Red Crater was steep and the ground was loose. But once you arrive at the top of the Red Crater you have a fantastic view, looking back down towards South Crater, Mt Ngaurahoe and Mangatepopo Valley. Here you can head left to the summit of Mt Tongariro. Continuing along the alpine crossing, you will up onto the highest point of the Red Crater's rim and then back down to the Central Crater and Emerald Lakes. Going down the ground is extremely loose and has you sliding down for part of the way. The Emerald lakes are beautiful clear blue water filled craters or when we crossed mostly iced covered pools. At the bottom of the Central Crater, you also meet by another junction to the Oturere Hut and the Tongariro Northern Circuit. But here, continue straight ahead toward the Blue Lake and Ketetahi Carpark.
The next section heads across the Central Crater which for us was covered in 4 feet of snow/ice which was a bit different. Then the path heads up for the final climb to the Blue Lake. Again for us, it was covered in ice. Next couple of hours has you heading down off the mountain, with beautiful views of the lakes around Mt Tongariro. So you can see Lake Rotoaira and behind that lake, New Zealand's largest lake, Taupo. Also, you see Te Maari Craters and Ketetahi Springs and about half way, Ketetahi hut which is used as a toilet stop and shelter if the weather turns, but I would not fancy staying there as the roof full of holes from past eruption's falling debris. The last section of the route is easy and before you know it you're into the forest below and back at the car park, where we were picked up for us to be returned to our hostel.
Also remember to take the correct equipment and be prepared for the worst. Upon the mountain, the weather conditions can change quickly and not be forecasted. So always only do what you can and what you're prepared for. For the winter season, the crossing can only be done with guides. When we did the crossing the Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngaurahoe summit were closed because there was still to much ice and snow on the mountains. So look up the currently information and warnings. The best place is to visit the Department of Conservation website:
Also to use a shuttle bus like we did or one of the guided walks. We used Tongariro Expeditions to pick us up from our Taupo accommodation:

Most DANGEROUS Hike in New Zealand TONGARIRO ALPINE CROSSING | Renell Lumagui | New Zealand
This is the most dangerous hike we've done! We underestimated nature but we survived, and we have this story to tell about the Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Alpine Crossing in Tongariro National Park
A daytrip to Tongariro National Park to do what is perhaps the best day hike in all of New Zealand. I was base in Lake Taupo, which is about 1 hour away from the national park Due to volcanic activity in the area, there is a new alpine crossing which takes 6-8 hours to complete one-way. On the other hand, you can choose to go all the way to red crater/emerald lakes, which is about the halfway mark of the crossing and make a u-turn back. The majority of hikers that day did the u-turn. I also did the u-turn. Most people said the highlights of the crossing is in the first half of the hike. I arrived there around 7 am by shuttle bus, and started my hike shortly after. I was back at the parking lot around 2 pm. I was fortunate that we had good weather during the hike since this area is notorious for constant ever-changing unpredictable weather. music credit to Veneox

Tongariro Crossing - New Zealand
Just realized I hadn't made this video public yet but only linked it in my article about Tongariro in New Zealand -
Description: A short video about the Tongariro Crossing, which we did during our travels around the world back in 2016. It was a beautiful warm day with blue skies. But it was also very crowded, which is normal for the crossing, as it is one of the most popular hikes on the planet.

Tongariro Alpine Crossing - New Zealand - November 2017
Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of the most famous routes for hiking in New Zealand. I have been lucky to make it and see beautiful landscape in this piece of earth. he route takes you through mountain Tongariro and Mt. Ngauruhoe infamous as a Mt. Doom from Lord Of The Rings. Tongariro Crossing has 19,4 km and it is possible to make a side track to one of the mounts or both.
I did the side track to Mt. Doom, what is one of must do for the fan of LOTR.
In the end I did over 24km distance.

#127 TONGARIRO ALPINE CROSSING | MAY 2017 | TREKKING MOUNT DOOM | TREK INTO MIDDLE EARTH | 19.4KM
TRAVEL VLOG #127
After a great few, relaxing days in Taupo it was time to get active and see Mount Doom. Considered one of the best day hikes in the world this was a must for us on our visit to New Zealand.
Because the Tongariro Crossing isn't a loop we parked the car up at the finish and took the shuttle to the start point. We were on our way whilst the sun was coming up which was an amazing sight but it was also freezing.
We soon warmed up and were already surrounded with beautiful scenery of snow peaks and volcanoes. Certain parts of the 19.4km hike were steep but it really was an amazing experience and one not to be missed whilst in NZ.
We got a real close up look of Mount Doom and you can even do a side walk to the top. We carried on to the Soda Springs which were just the most unreal colour. It was stunning.
We had the best day hiking Tongariro and loved our journey into middle earth. haha!

Running the 28-mile Northern Circuit in Tongrarero National Park, New Zealand
This video was put together with footage and photos taken while running the Northern Circuit in New Zealand. After tracking closely to the popular Tongrarero Crossing route for the first four miles, we summitted, passed Emerald Lake, then cut a hard right and ran out into the wilderness on the Northern Circuit Trail. One of the volcanoes that we ran around was filmed (and with added CG), was featured as Mt. Doom in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
We stayed at the best place around, Discovery Lodge, a low-cost spot just a mile from the park entrance. Callum Harland, the lodge's owner, is an accomplished mountain runner and is great for offering advice on running routes in the area.
The 28-mile run took about eight hours to complete, including food, photo and water stops (rangers kindly refilled bottles from rainwater stations at hiker lodges).
The music is Om Nashi Me by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros.
