Flight over Mount Tarawera and Rotorua New Zealand 1991
With turbulence so bad all 4 passengers felt really sick viewing volcanos by boat plane is not recommended by me. This is one 1991 experience that will always be remembered but for the wrong reasons. Should we ever have the chance to repeat this a helicopter will be chosen! The video has been heavily edited because the camera spent more time bouncing around the inside and filming the aircraft's floor than it did filming the surroundings.
Mt Tarawera New Zealand ????????
Mount Tarawera is the volcano responsible for one of New Zealand's largest historic eruptions. Located 24 kilometres southeast of Rotorua in the North Island, it consists of a series of rhyolitic lava domes that were fissured down the middle by an explosive basaltic eruption in 1886, which killed an estimated 120 people. These fissures run for about 17 kilometres northeast-southwest. The main governing tribes of Mount Tarawera Tūhourangi and Ngāti Rangitihi.

World famous in New Zealand: Mt Tarawera Floatplane Adventure, Rotorua
PAMELA WADE Last updated 05:00, August 19 2018 Researchers say they're close to discovering the location of the Pink and White Terraces, which were largely destroyed in the 1886 eruption of Mt Tarawera. Get a taste of the celebrity lifestyle by being picked up by a floatplane from the Rotorua lakefront, with everybody watching as you climb aboard and putter away, scattering the swans. Then, with a throaty roar, you skim along, water splashing alongside the windows, and get airborne over the lake...

New Zealand: Hiking up the Mt Tarawera

Mount Tarawera, about 50kms out of the city, reminds you to be respectful of how mighty the earth can be. In 1886, it erupted with incredible violence, creating a column of ash and steam 11kms high, killing 153 people, and burying three villages with 20 metres of mud and ash.
Today, Mount Tarawera is considered a Maori sacred site, with three distinct peaks and six craters. Thus, hiking up to the summit of the mountain is a must! It was awesome crater-walking uphill on a rough track. But it was a bummer that we had to try seeing through endless layers of fog, so I couldn’t enjoy the views of all of Tarawera’s peaks and craters, as well as the peaks of some distant volcanoes poking above the clouds. Nonetheless, it was quite an exercise for me and I’d recommend this activity to anyone; however, be sure to keep out on weather to ensure you get the best out of the hike.

The Eruption of Tarawera (2000) Part 1
In June 1886 Mt Tarawera spectacularly erupted, and this documentary tells the story of the people who were caught in the catastrophic events. Around 120 people lost their lives, and the internationally famous Pink and White Terraces were destroyed. The documentary features an animated re-creation of the eruption, archival images, interviews with descendants of those involved, and readings from written eyewitness accounts. The author of the book Tarawera, Ron Keam, is also interviewed.
