Nissan supports Japanese car culture exhibit at the Petersen Automotive Museum
LOS ANGELES – Nissan announced its support of two new exhibits at the Petersen Automotive Museum that celebrate and explore the intersection of American and Japanese car culture. Both open to the public May 26.
The first part of the exhibit, titled The Roots of Monozukuri: Creative Spirit in Japanese Automaking illuminates key elements of Japanese design philosophy in the years preceding its climb to market dominance in the 1970s. In concert, Fine Tuning: Japanese-American Customs examines the rise of Japanese car customization in Japan and the United States, and how each market influenced the other to redefine car culture.
Nissan is honored to be part of the Petersen's 'The Roots of Monozukuri' exhibit, which celebrates 60-years of Japanese cars in the U.S., said Richard Plavetich, general manager, Nissan Design America. The Very Cool Petersen Automotive Museum, Los Angeles
The Petersen Automotive Museum is located on Wilshire Boulevard along Museum Row in the Miracle Mile neighborhood of Los Angeles. One of the world's largest automotive museums, the Petersen Automotive Museum is a nonprofit organization specializing in automobile history and related educational programs.
The museum has over one-hundred vehicles on display in its twenty-five galleries. The remaining half of the collection is kept in a vault, located on the basement level of the building. Age restrictions and an admission premium are in effect to view the vault collection. The ground floor focuses on automotive artistry, showcasing an array of extravagant automobiles. The second floor is principally concerned with industrial engineering—including design, performance, and a collection of interactive teaching exhibits. Special displays on the industry floor cover racing, motorcycles, hot rods and customs. The third floor chronicles the history of the automobile with an emphasis on the car culture of Southern California.
Inside the vehicle vault housing world famous cars
(9 Sep 2018) LEADIN:
Some of the world's most loved cars are being stored in a secure underground compound in Los Angeles to preserve them for future generations.
The renowned Petersen Automotive Museum is now allowing selected visitors to get a sneak peek inside its historic vault.
SCRIPT:
Welcome to a secret world of automotive history.
Behind these doors, located deep below the ground under the world famous Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, sits a garage beyond any car lovers fantasy.
Inside there are more than 350 of the worlds most iconic cars collector cars, from brass era to formula one.
The Vault is home to vehicles representing over 120 years of automotive history.
Some have rarely been seen by the public and are only now being shown for the first time.
Leslie Kendall, curator at Petersen Automotive Museum says it's a compelling display of the best cars.
Well people coming to the Petersen Museum have an option to also visit The Vault which is our subterranean parking area where we store the cars that are not on public display. Like any other museum, we cannot possibly display all the artefact we own. We own over 300 cars and we have more than another hundred on loan to us so we have quite a treasure trove but we wanted people to be able to see those too, he says.
Guided tours are now offered 8 times a day allowing visitors to experience global car culture.
The tours traverse the globe, featuring the cars made famous in Europe, America and on screen in Hollywood.
The exhibition explores the history of the automobile from its early beginnings.
Cars on display include, the 1900 classic that Bob Hope had built for John Wayne.
There's also a 1903 Cadillac that was the very first one made; a 1911 Regal Linderslung, a low slung high performance brass era roadster; a 1925 Rolls Royce Phantom 1; and an art-deco styled custom-made aerodynamic coupe that was restored in 1934 - it has a 7,500 pound 25-foot body with symmetrical doors and butterfly windows.
Also in The Vault, there are three classics used in the motorcade to drive US presidents. It includes a 1931 Cord L-29, America's first front wheel drive car with a crystal head ornament made out of pure Lalique crystal.
There's also a 1942 to 1946 Lincoln made for Presidents Roosevelt and Truman, a 1952-56 Chevrolet Imperial Parade Phaeton used for President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and a 1967-69 classic for Presidents Nixon and Ford.
Cars from movies include; cars used for James Bond, The Spy who Shagged me, Green Hornet, and Herbie the Love Bug.
Also in The Vault, super cars, Formula One cars, hot rods and low riders.
Shayan Bokie, director of products for Petrolicious, a digital automotive lifestyle magazine, says it's a one in a lifetime experience.
The Vault is a time machine. This is a hundred years of automotive design and history in just a few steps so you're watching the automobile evolve through time which is pretty surreal to see and there's a really great diversity of stuff as well. Every tangent of automotive culture is pretty well represented. It's like someone took their toy chest full of model cars and just emptied it on the floor. Where else are you going to find a formula one car, lowrider and the Shah of Iran's Bugatti in one place? if you wanted to see these cars at an event, it would take a couple of lifetimes to get them all, so seeing them all in one place is definitely a must see if you're even remotely interested in cars, he says.

National Automobile Museum (Full Walkthrough Tour)
The National Automobile Museum, located just south of the Truckee River in Reno, Nevada, displays historic automobiles from the late 19th century and from throughout the 20th. Most of the vehicles displayed are from the collection of the late casino owner William F. Harrah, and so the museum is sometimes referred to as The Harrah Collection. The museum opened in 1989.
William F. Harrah had collected approximately 1,450 automobiles, which he stored inside warehouses in Sparks, Nevada. It was the world's largest collection of historic automobiles, and was opened to the public. When Harrah died in 1978, Holiday Inn acquired his hotel-casino company and the automobile collection. In 1981, Holiday Inn announced that it would sell the entire collection, a decision that received some opposition. Nevada governor Robert List attempted to delay the sale while working on a plan to have the state enact legislation that would save the collection.
Businessman Thomas Perkins later led a group that was interested in purchasing the collection. Both efforts to save the collection failed. However, a nonprofit organization was formed that ultimately resulted in the construction of the museum. Holiday Inn donated 175 of Harrah's automobiles to the group, while the remainder of his collection was sold during three auctions in the mid-1980s. Another 60 vehicles were donated to the group by private owners. The museum opened in 1989, in downtown Reno, Nevada.
The museum's holdings of over 200 cars are spread over four galleries. Gallery 1 showcases cars built during the 1890s & 1900s, Gallery 2 features cars from the 1910s to 1930s, Gallery 3 the 1930s through to the 1950s, and Gallery 4 displays cars from 1950 onwards. Gallery 4 also includes race cars and the Off-road Motorsports Hall of Fame. Each gallery is linked by a themed street, featuring vehicles as well as faux shop fronts.
Celebrity owned cars include:
- Elvis Presley's 1973 Cadillac Eldorado,
- Frank Sinatra's 1961 Ghia L6.4,
- John F. Kennedy assigned 1962 Lincoln Continental,
- John Wayne's 1953 Chevrolet Corvette.
Movie featured cars include:
- 1892 Philion Road Carriage, from The Magnificent Ambersons,
- 1912 Rambler 73-400 Cross-Country, from the 1997 version of Titanic,
- 1949 Mercury Eight, driven by James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause.
The collection includes examples from marques such as; Auburn, Bugatti, Cord, Duesenberg, Ferrari, Franklin, Jaguar, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, Pierce-Arrow, Porsche, Rolls-Royce, and Stutz. Also on display is one of three 24kt gold plated DeLorean DMC-12s built for American Express, a Jerrari, a Jeep Wagoneer fitted with a V-12 Ferrari engine and formerly used for winter driving by William F. Harrah, and the only surviving prototype of Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion car. The one-of-a-kind Phantom Corsair is also displayed at the museum.
The Museum has been named in the 'Top Ten Museums' by Car Collector magazine, one of America's Five Greatest Automobile Museums and one of the top sixteen auto museums in the world by AutoWeek, and has been repeatedly selected as the best museum in Northern Nevada by Nevada Magazine's annual reader's poll.
