My Day 6 in Iceland.
Greeted with a stunning mountainous view of Seydisfjordur from my window.
Today I visited the Awesome Lava Caves, experience the strongest winds I ever had in Iceland, stopping ever so often for the spectecular ladnscape along the way and witnessingthe awesome power of the Godafoss. It was an emotional roller coastal drive !

Námafjall is a high-temperature geothermal area with fumaroles and boiling mud pools. At a depth of 1000 meters the temperature is above 200 degrees C. As is characteristic for other hot spring areas
there is a hot spring smell at Námafjall which is caused by the steam and the fumarole gas, such as hydrogen sulfide.
Mývatn is a shallow eutrophic lake situated in an area of active volcanism in the north of Iceland, not far from Krafla volcano. The lake and its surrounding wetlands have an exceptionally rich fauna of waterbirds, especially ducks. The lake was created by a large basaltic lava eruption 2300 years ago, and the surrounding landscape is dominated by volcanic landforms, including lava pillars and rootless vents (pseudocraters).

Exploring the sites around Lake Mývatn in North Iceland!
The sites around Lake Mývatn in Northern Iceland are unique from the rest of the country. Other than being around millions of flies, during our self-guided one day road trip tour, we explored Grjótagjá Thermal Spring, Hverfjall Crater, Dimmuborgir Volcanic Caves and Rock Formations, Hofdi Lava Pillars, Skútustadagígar Pseudocraters and ended our day soaking in the Mývatn Nature Baths (the Blue Lagoon of the North).

Where is Lake Myvatn located?
Lake Myvatn is located in Northern Iceland. It is 97 km/60 mi east of Iceland’s “Capital of the North”, Akureyri, and 475 km/295 mi northeast of Iceland’s capital Reykjavik.

How long does it take to tour the sites around Lake Myvatn?
This is dependent on how much you will explore each site. We recommend the following minimum/maximum times for each site:
Grjótagjá – 30 min/1.5 hours
Hverfjall – 1 hour/2 hours
Dimmuborgir – 45 min/2.5 hours
Hofdi – – 20 min/1 hour
Skútustadagígar – 15 min/1 hour
Nature Baths – 30 min/3 hours
How should you tour Myvatn Lake?
Each of these places are easily accessible via car. They all have parking lots and most have informational signs at the start of the site (see below). At Grjótagjá, you will need to climb down some rocks to see the thermal springs but the water is too hot to bathe. You must be able to climb a hill to view the top. At Hverfjall, you will need to hike up a dirt incline. Dimmuborgir and Hofdi have easy dirt walking paths. Skútustadagígar also has easy walking paths but you may have to walk up tiny hills to see the inside of the psuedocraters. It is really easy to enter the Myvatn Nature Baths but can be slippery in some areas.
When should you visit Lake Myvatn?
This area boasts some of Iceland’s best weather during the summer months and is one of the coldest areas during the winter. In winter time, the roads are subject to closure so keep that in mind.

What should you bring when touring Lake Myvatn and its surrounding sites?

Highly recommend a fly net to cover your face if you plan on visiting the sites close to the lake. See the black spots in that picture? Those are flies! Visit the Mývatn Nature Baths at the end of your day to recover from touring all the sites. Hverfjall, Dimmuborgir and Skútustadagígar have absolutely no shaded areas so wear proper sun protection. Similar to everywhere else in Iceland, wear layers!

The Mývatn area is well known for its impressive environment and abundant bird life. Nowhere in the world are there more species of duck to be seen in summer. Here and in the neighboring valley Aðaldalur are the only nesting grounds of Barrow's goldeneye in Europe. The common scoter and the gadwall are rare in Iceland outside Þingeyjarsýsla in Northeast Iceland.

Myvatn Nature Bath (Jarðböðin við Mývatn) is a geothermal swimming pool often called the Blue Lagoon north of Iceland.
Baths located in an active volcanic Krafla area between the towns of Akureyti and Seydisfjordur.
Water is supplied to the lagoon with a small geothermal station which is operated by Landsvikjun - national energy supplier. That station is one of the oldest in Iceland, was launched in March 1969 year. It is used as a source of hot water supplying the local towns and villages and of course the aforementioned lagoon.
The water pumped to the pool in the vicinity of the lagoon has a temperature of about 130 degrees, whereas in the lagoon, depending on where from 36 to 40 degrees Celsius. Watering is built in a way less commercial than its counterpart located in the vicinity of Keflavík - Blue Lagoon. It is also much less crowded with tourists, what makes this place worth a visit, especially for people who like the peace by taking relaxing baths admire the way the beautiful surroundings. The bottom of the lagoon is dotted with sand and fine gravel. The water in the pools is rich in many minerals having healing properties, especially for the respiratory system and skin. Due to its composition of water in the lagoon it is still pure and naturally disinfected. One of the components is, of course, sulfur, avoid swimming jewelry, almost immediately blackens.
Baths is equipped with two steam baths, where the temperature is about 50 ° C and the relative humidity reaches 100%. Peering into the restaurant kvik can taste the local specialties, especially the famous soup of the day and bread baked in the hot springs.

Myvatn lake : north Iceland ( famous lake of fies ) - Drone Iceland
One of the main attractions of the north is famous lake Myvatn, located at a distance of about 55 kilometers south of the town of Husavik. It is also the fourth largest lake in Iceland, a place that you must see.
Its name (isl. my - the mosquito or fly + Vatn - lake) means lake flies which almost perfectly reflects the character of this place. Ubiquitous near the lake insects can drive a man to despair. If you're going to admire these beautiful lands you must obtain a special protective nets worn over the head. It can be purchased on nearby petrol stations.
The lake was created about 35,000 years ago, it covers its surface area thirty-seven kilometers square. The average depth of the lake is 2.5 meters and the deepest point reaches up to four and a half meters. The water in the lake is rich in minerals and algae, which means that it takes blue-green hues. The transparency of the water allows you to see the rich vegetation and fish among the seaweed. Surface of a lake is filled with dozens of small islands and the coast grow pseudo-craters called Skútustaðagígar formed during the explosion gases. In 1974. The area around the lake has been strictly protected, and these pseudo-craters were considered monuments.
Interestingly is that, the water in the lake never freezes completely, despite the fact that it is located just 100 kilometers from the Arctic Circle. This is due to the nearby active volcanoes, geothermal and lava fields.
Myvatn is an ideal place for bird watching, Shores of the lake is home to many species of waterfowl. In summer you can meetings largest population of ducks, more than 16 different species, whose numbers even exceeds 150,000 individuals. In addition to ducks you can meet geese, białozory, whooper swans, curlews, snipe, golden plover and białorzytki and 76 other species that are turning out to be spot on. While migratory birds are represented here by nearly 240 different species. In winter you can see the whooper swans (Cygnus Cygnus)
From May 20 to July 20 on part of the land within the lake entry is prohibited, due to the breeding season of birds.

Iceland Myvatn - Akureyri
Day 3 in Iceland and Day 2 of driving the ring road Hofn - Akureyri.
This was the most challenging driving day!! I don't recommend the driving route that the GPS took us purely due to the severity of the gravel roads which including driving up a mountain but I will admit it was the quickest route. Hofn - Djupivogur drive was good but Djupivogur - Egilsstaðir was the worst gravel road in the whole of Iceland & it was for the whole 90km! Google maps predicted an hour and a half drive... It took me 3 in my tiny Chevrolet. I was quicker driving Egilsstaðir - Myvatn which was 170km.

Stop 2: Myvatn Nature Baths (we did not pay to go in as we pre-booked the blue lagoon which was £20 more expensive)
Stop 3: Viti Crater (we had to drive back 9km from Myvatn Baths)
Stop 4: Godafoss Waterfall
Stop 5: Akureyri
Myvatn mud pools smelt of Sulphur & rotten eggs; this smell stuck with me the rest of the trip smelling it in the showers & tasting it in the tap water whilst brushing my teeth!
Accommodation: Akureyri Backpackers Hostel. This was the best hostel we stayed in! Great cooking & shower facilities. We stayed in a twin private room with shared bathroom - it was the cleanest place I have ever stayed in!! Full of life staying with 66 acapella singing Germans with a 6:00am shower sing a long. There free parking is on the street until 10am & we arrived at 8pm.
