Munising, Michigan Shipwreck Adventure 2008
This is an abridged version of our trip video from our 2008 Munising Shipwreck Adventure. This trip was originally scheduled for July but scheduling conflicts with the charter company moved it to September. The water was really warm and the diving was awesome even though the weather did not really cooperate on Sunday.

The Pinewood Lodge is just a 10 minute drive from Munising and the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. This incredible 7500 square foot private log estate is located on one of the top 10 inland lake sand beaches in the U.S. and is nestled in the shelter of Au Train Bay. Our guests will have the luxury of enjoying several hundred feet of a perfect (rock-free) private sand beach with lakeside fire pits and a stunning custom log gazebo overhanging the beach & overlooking majestic Lake Superior and Au Train Island. If you love spending time outdoors and soaking up the sun, you will enjoy the 5000 square feet of deck surrounding it as well as thousands of feet of wooded walking paths with romantic private sitting areas. Finally, you can relax in the full size indoor cedar sauna after a long day of activities.
This lodge is the largest single structure vacation rental in the entire Pictured Rocks area and comfortably sleeps up to 34 people (not including 2 toddler beds). There are 10 bedrooms, 7 full and 1 half bath, 2 fully stocked granite counter topped kitchens, dining seating for 36 (+ 2 highchairs), as well as abundant sitting area for socializing in either the east or west great rooms—each with its own unique fireplace (constructed with stones hand-picked from the Lake Superior shore). (Please e-mail for expanded floor plan drawings.) Everything needed for the comforts of home are provided in this lodge including on-site laundry, 3 gas grills, basic condiments and spices, and all dinner and cookware for your large group. Pinewood Lodge is also equipped with dish TV, wireless high speed internet, DVD players, movies, as well as game system inputs that are provided on the TV in the Kid Cave.
Our location is only a 15 minute drive to countless sightseeing adventures which include dozens of waterfalls and boat tours of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. If you enjoy hiking, biking or snowmobiling, trails are nearby—or just hop on a ferry and spend the day enjoying Grand Island (Grand Island Tours rents bicycles, kayaks and SUPs). Also just two miles east from the lodge is the Au Train River with kayak and canoe rentals—where you can enjoy a leisurely 3 hour ride for under $30 per person. Less than half a mile away from the lodge, you will find a public boat launch for your ultimate fishing experience as well as the historic Brownstone Inn with great food, a large craft beer selection, and a comfortable atmosphere.
We recently acquired this property−which was built in the 1990s and was once locally known as the Pinewood Lodge Bed & Breakfast; in Spring 2017, we renovated the lodge to convert it into a large capacity vacation rental. We added the second full kitchen, all new carpeting, bedding, linens and custom log furniture. The transformation is now complete and ready for you to enjoy! Even though the Pinewood Lodge is new to VRBO, you can view our other vacation rentals located 2 miles east on the Au train River (search Reel Inn Cabin, capacity of 6-8 and Reel Inn Lodge, capacity of 14-20) for customer reviews. If needed, your group could plan ahead and combine all three properties for a total group capacity of 60.

FIVE DAYS HIKING PICTURED ROCKS - 42.4 Miles (LAKESHORE TRAIL | BACKPACKING IN THE UPPER PENINSULA)
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a 42.4 mile hike along the lakeshore of Lake Superior in Michigan. We completed this hike over the course of five days in August 2019. This trail is beautiful and wild, with moments of woodsy solitude, ocean-like sandy beachfronts, and AT-style trails that leave backpackers in awe. From the rock carvings to the afternoons swimming in the turquoise waters of Lake Superior, this adventure did not disappoint. Enjoy our journey through Pictured Rocks!

Hiking the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore: Hammock Camping Grand Sable to Munising
The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is probably one of the most beautiful and diverse areas I've had the opportunity to hike. This must be one of the best hikes in Michigan and it was gorgeous to go backpacking in this area. The trail from Grand Sable visitor's center to Munising visitor center is 42.4 miles long and treats you with great views of Lake Superior, dense woodland and forests and beautiful beaches. Our campsites for this trip were Au Sable East, Beaver Lake campground and Cliffs. We hammock camped each night and the mileage for the four day trip was (7.1 miles, 13.3 miles, 16.9 miles and then 5.1 miles).
One of the highlights of the trip was being able to wash up in Lake Superior. Was it cold? Yes!! I think the lower half of my body went numb after the first 2 minutes and I definitely wouldn't have tried this if the day wasn't warm.
Another highlight of the trip were the campsites. Not only were our sites great but we passed multiple others that would have been excellent. Of particular note were the Coves and Trapper's Lake camp grounds. From what I remember both had excellent water views and access to the beaches.

Hiawatha National Forest (7 EPIC MUST SEE PLACES!) Upper Peninsula Michigan
In this episode I drove 400 miles and only had 2 days to see the most fantastic places while RV camping on this Upper Peninsula Michigan/Lake Superior, Hiawatha National Forest adventure. I suspected this was going to be different than any others and boy was I right! If you are planning to visit the Munising MI/Au Train Michigan area… here are my 7 MUST-SEE places.
We camped in the Hiawatha National Forest at the Bay Furnace campground, a Michigan State Forest campground and this was the best location on the south shores of Lake Superior for us to explore the area. Nearby is Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Au Train Falls, upper Michigan waterfalls, Miners Falls and Miners Castle. These sightseeing attractions were amazing!
Stop #1
We found a very rough road that lead to majestic rocks on Lake Superior shoreline by Au Train Bay – located in between Au Train and Munising.
Stop #2
Au Train Beach
Stop #4
Pizza – Zaf’s Party Store
Stop #5
Au Train Falls – breathtaking upper Michigan waterfalls!
Stop #6
Miners Castle at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
Miners Castle has an overlook above some of the Pictured Rocks (standing atop the dramatic sandstone cliffs that border Lake Superior for 15 miles Northeast of Munising, Michigan. The views were amazing. Next time I visit I will view Pictured Rocks via a boat and there are commercial boat tours from the Munising city dock.
While here we also took the Lower Overlook Trail to Miners Castle – Big Pictured Rocks
And the Lake Superior beach here was great for rock collecting.
Stop #7
Miners Falls – a short trail leading to the waterfalls to these spectacular Upper peninsula Michigan waterfalls.
If you are looking for Munising MI things to do, I recommend this list of epic places. I can’t wait to come back for more Hiawatha National Forest adventures!

Adventuring in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan
Fourth of July weekend I joined my best friend in an adventure to the Upper Peninsula. Ethan and I got to hang out with Mary and her Tech friends as well as be a tourist in our own state of Michigan. We stayed in Houghton and visited a few water falls.
Enjoy this short vlog of things I actually remembered to record. Sometimes it is really difficult to record when you are too busy being fully present in the moment.
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Park in HD - Munising Michigan: a Video Tour
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a U.S. National Park following the shore of Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. It consists of 42 miles (67 km) of lakeshore and covers 73,236 acres (114 sq mi; 296 km2). The park is littered with incredible scenery of the sandstone cliffs, rock formations, sandy beaches and natural archways between Munising and Grand Marais (both in Michigan).
Pictured Rocks got its name from the area northeast of Munising where red sandstone cliffs tower up to 200 feet above the Lake Superior's water level. The constant crashing of waves has carved the soft sandstone into incredible shapes, caves and formations over thousands of years. If you are driving through the Upper Peninsula be sure to check them out!

Dry Camping for 6 days in Michigan's Upper Peninsula
Our stateside tour of Lake Superior begins at the majestic Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. We traveled off the beaten path to find a secluded campground just 20 minutes from the lakeshore. Will no reservations be a problem? Will we run out of power and water?
We're traveling North America in our Safari Condo Alto R1713 as we learn to live lighter in our little glass camper.
