Swimming With The Hawaiian Fishes - Diving Kealakekua Bay Captain Cook Monument, Hawaii
Aloha Hui!
Today we mix it up a bit and get some diving done over at Kealakekua Bay, Hawaii. Aura was kind enough to invite me to go out on a diving sesh to the captain cook monument to get some nice looks at the Hawaiian fish and the beautiful ocean. Saw a few Invasive roi to, but the area is a no fishing zone so I guess they are going to need to hang out. It was an amazing diving and swimming sesh non the less and a beautiful day in the ocean of Hawaii.
2 Step Beach Snorkeling, Big Island, Hawaii
2 Step Snorkeling location in the Kona region of the Big Island, Hawaii. 2 step refers to the rock steps used to get into the ocean. On the day I went the weather was pretty good and the water was clear. It is rocky when getting in and no sand, so if you have water shoes that is better or just wear your fins early.
There were a number of tourists and divers with everyone getting in and out in the same location, which created a traffic jam.
I snorkeled in a number of locations on the island and this location is unique in that the water is very deep with coral all around.

EPIC Hawaii Snorkel: Big Island Snorkeling HD
Take a look at this HD action camera footage from several days of snorkeling in the Big Island, Hawaii. Primarily from Two Step and Kahaluu Beach Park, in addition to Hilton Lagoon and Mauna Kea Beach. Stick around for the end to enjoy the beautiful sea turtles (don't touch!). I have traveled to each of the main islands of Hawaii and the snorkel experience on the Big Island is definitely at the top!
Kahaluu Beach is definitely one of the easier places to snorkel, Two Step has much more coral but the water is much deeper.

Kukio beach, Big Island, Hawaii
Kukio Bay Overview
Located just north of Kikaua Point Beach Park on the Big Island’s Kohala coast you will find the white sands of Kukio Beach. Located approximately 18 miles from downtown Kailua-Kona, this lovely white-sand beach can be reached through the entrance gate to Four Seasons Hualalai Resort.
Framing Kukio Beach’s white sands, you will find coconut palms, ironwood and mesquite trees with a few small brackish-water ponds adjacent to the shoreline. Lava rocks contour the length of the beach’s tideline, forming tidal pools where little ones can check out the marine life. Because of these rocks, water shoes are suggested if you’re wading out into the bay. A good access point is a sand bagged spot at the north end of the shoreline. To enjoy your day at the beach, make sure to bring along fresh water, snacks, a hat and plenty of reef-safe sunscreen, there’s not a lot of shade along Kukio Beach, but there is an area of coconut palms just south of the main beach at Kikaua Point.
Kukio Beach Activities
The main bay is not the best for swimming or snorkeling due to its frequently murky water and lava rocks, however, the water in Kukio Bay is relatively calm in the morning and excellent for stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking and canoeing. During the winter months, the swells are abundant, but the rocky shoreline discourages many board sports. Visitors to the area will often spot Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles (honu) resting along the shores or even spinner dolphins out in the bay’s expanse.
Kukio beach connects up with Kikaua Point Beach Park at the southern end, offering access to a coconut palm lined park and a small lagoon, perfect for kids to swim or for adults to cool off in a more gentle beach environment. This area also offers showers, restrooms and drinking water.

Magical Swim With Dolphins in Hawaii! - 2 Step Beach, Big Island Hawaii
Swimming with dolphins has been one of the most magical moments I have ever had while traveling and snorkeling! Just amazing! The dolphins came out to play while I was snorkeling at 2 Step Beach in Hawaii's Big Island.
Note: This was NOT A TOUR. I saw the dolphins in their natural habitat.
I had been to 2 Step Beach many times and there is always amazing sealife to see there, but this was the first time I was there with dolphins. JUST MAGICAL!!!
WATCH the Guide to 2 Step Beach to learn about visiting this beach for snorkeling. It is some of the best snorkeling in Hawaii at this beach.
- 2 Step Beach (Guide to snorkeling)
I did not take a tour to swim with dolphins because I had heard that some of the tours can be disruptive to the dolphins sleeping/resting patterns.
