Old Sacramento - Things to Do in Sacramento | California Travel Tips
Veronica Hill of California Travel Tips offers a guided tour of Old Sacramento State Historic Park in Sacramento, CA. Established in 1849, the Old Sacramento district was formed as eager miners, bankers and businessmen arrived for California's Gold Rush. Today, there are 53 historic Spanish-style buildings to explore, and many have been faithfully restored.
Old Sacramento attractions include the 1851 Big Four House, named for the founders of the First Transcontinental Railroad; and the 1853 B. F. Hastings Building, which once housed the Pony Express terminal and California's Supreme Court. During Sacramento's boom years, miners and pioneers flocked to the Eagle Theatre, which was established in 1849. This was the first permanent theater in California, and is rumored to be haunted by its former owner.
Set on 28 acres and roughly eight city blocks, Old Sacramento is packed with activities. You can tour Sacramento by electric bicycle or horse and carriage, explore the Sacramento Schoolhouse Museum, or hop aboard the California State Railroad Museum Sacramento Southern Railroad for a 40-minute train ride.
Old Sacramento was the terminus of the Transcontinental Railroad and the last stop on the Pony Express. At 2nd and J streets, you'll find the Pony Express Monument, which commemorates the 1,900-mile mail route from Missouri to Sacramento. Another monument honors Theodore Judah, the engineer who helped design the first Transcontinental Railroad.
In 1862, a record-breaking rainstorm flooded Sacramento, causing the city to raise the streets up to 14 feet by the 1870s. Underground Tours are offered through the Sacramento History Museum, where you can explore the legends that lurk beneath the city sidewalks; or you can check out Pioneer Park, which offers a glimpse at the lower levels of the city.
For a unique overnight, hang your hat at The Delta King, which is docked on the Sacramento River waterfront. This 1920s riverboat cruised between San Francisco and Sacramento until the 1940s and is one of the most unique and charming hotels in Sacramento. In 1982, the Delta King was restored to the tune of $9 million, and now boasts modern hotel rooms, a theater, wine school and two charming Old Sacramento restaurants.
One thing to remember — most of Old Town is metered parking, so you'll need some change to park. Change machines are located on almost every city block.

OLD SACRAMENTO, California
Old Sacramento, California
These 28 acres on the Sacramento’s historic waterfront were the site of both tragedy — fire and flood — and triumph — the raising of the streets, the founding of the Transcontinental Railroad, the terminus of the Pony Express, and the home of California’s first thriving business district, fueled by gold, agriculture and the river.
Due to past and current efforts by the State of California, private and public museums, individuals, business, the City and County of Sacramento, the Historic Old Sacramento Foundations, scores of volunteers, and many others, Old Sacramento Waterfront lives on as thriving shopping and entertainment district as well as a global tourist destination. Visit Sacramento: Things To Do In Sacramento!
Learn more about things to do in Sacramento on my blog here:
This is Sactown! Everyone needs to visit Sacramento, the capital of California! Ok, I may be a bit bias, this is my hometown, but let me try to convince you to visit Sacramento through this vlog. I'll reveal all the best things to do in Sacramento from a local perspective including my favorite Sacramento restaurants, nightlife, and attractions.
First things first, we like to call Sacramento Sac or Sactown so don't be surprised if you hear locals referring to the city this way. There's about half a million people in Sacramento, our professional teams are the Sacramento Kings for basketball, the Sacramento River Cats for minor league baseball, and Sacramento Republic for soccer.
The Sacramento International airport (SMF) has over 30 non stop flights that'll get you pretty much anywhere in the United States as well as popular destinations in Mexico. When you arrive to Sactown, I would recommend starting in old Sacramento. Sacramento made a name for itself back in the 1800's as a top destination for mining during the gold rush times. Many sailors would abandon their ships in the San Francisco harbor to make their way to Sacramento for new opportunities. Today, old Sacramento still gives you that old timer feeling with horse carriage rides, historic wooden buildings, and even treasure hunting. Old Sacramento is situated on the Sacramento river waterfront where you'll find an abundance of restaurants, entertainment, and attractions. Eat dinner or stay the night on the Delta King, an authentic 285 foot riverboat, or check out the reconstruction of Sactown's 1876 Central Pacific Railroad Depot.
Drive across our infamous Tower Bridge into downtown Sacramento. Downtown Sacramento is also a short walk from old Sacramento where you can catch a King's game in the greenest arena in the US, the Golden One Center. The arena received the highest level of global recognition for environmentally conscious buildings and organizations. The arena plans to source 90 percent of the food and drink concessions from businesses and farms within 150 miles of the arena.
When you're in downtown Sacramento, check out the downtown lower commons area for local food, events, and attractions. I like to hit the midtown farmer's market on the weekends and these are some of my favorite Sacramento restaurants:
- Low Brau
- Mango's
- Goldenroad
- Punchbowl
- Zocalo
- Beach Hut Deli
- Mikuni
- Bacon & Butter
- Broderick 1893
When you visit Sacramento, some of the best attractions can be enjoyed during the late spring and summer months. Folsom lake is fun for water activities, camping, BBQ, and hiking trails. At Cal Expo you'll find the California State Fair and Raging Waters which have activities for the whole family. Head outside of Sacramento to visit Thunder Valley Casino & Resort, Sunsplash water park, or go way outside Sacramento to visit Lake Tahoe in the North and San Francisco in the south. You can get a feel for what the Bay Area has to offer including all it's amazing food in my Best Food in San Francisco vlog here: or my Best Food in Oakland vlog here:
When you visit Sacramento, you'll find that it's a family friendly city that's growing very fast. Sactown is a proud city, rich with historic beginnings and mixed with a new progressive feel. Downtown Sacramento is the new hub for next level entertainment, fresh local foods, and energy efficient experiences. There's many things to do in Sacramento, and we hope you get a chance to our enjoy our city!

Sacramento Old City Cemetery - Part 1 Pioneers Of Our Past
Sacramento Old City Cemetery was established in 1849 by John Sutter captain of Sutter's Fort who founded the city and donated 10 acres of land to be used for public burial. Sadly a short time later a major Cholera epidemic outbreak occurred killing about a 1000 emigrants who came to Sacramento as a stage stop before heading up to the sierras in search of gold. During the 1850's many pioneers buried here were victims of fires, flooding and disease, As the years passed the cemetery expanded to over 60 acres containing some of the most beautiful monuments and graves in the state of California as it was Victorian by design. At one time this cemetery had a bell tower and a gate house even. Margaret Crocker in 1880 donated 23 acres of the cemetery who owned an observatory that overlooked this historic graveyard. In the 1800's many victims of the Cholera epidemic were buried in mass graves along with 3000 pioneers, various fraternal groups, mayors, governors and other politicians were served the state of California. Old City Cemetery is divided up into nine smaller cemeteries which includes veterans of the Civil War in the Grand Army Of The Republic, Masons, Spanish American War Soldiers, Pioneers and Fireman who started the first hook and ladder company in the state of California just to name a few. At one time the region was prone to severe flooding so many pioneers camped up the cemeteries hill to escape the rising waters in the 1860's. After the turn of the century the city began to neglect this cemetery many of the graves were exhumed to make room for the growing city streets and other structures. The cemetery for many years was forgotten, desecrated and vandalized. Names such as E.B. Crocker, William Stephen Hamilton, General George Wright, John Sutter, Members of the Donner Party, Mark Hopkins and many more notables were interred here which later led to graveyards historic status in the 1950's. Today the cemetery is not only a designated historical landmark but also a haunted one. Stories about a phantom dog, couple wearing all black, firefighter who greets cemetery visitors, heroic train engineer who saved his passenger and even a little girl who died of Encephalitis are said to haunt this cemeteries graves. We invite you to take a tour of one of the most beautiful pioneer cemeteries on the west coast which is full of nature, flowers, history, lore and beautiful craftsmanship of various monuments of the dearly departed.

Sacramento | The Best of California
Originally a frontier outpost, Sacramento is now a thriving metropolis of just under half a million residents where government offices, political positioning, and financial commotion contrast the city's otherwise trendy neighborhood feel. A regular stop on the Amgen Tour of California and Amgen Tour of California Women's Race empowered with SRAM, Sacramento is California's heart and where the 2019 men's race will begin. A wide variety of history, architecture, food, neighborhoods, and museums represent the best of the Golden State. With a built-up appetite, this Farm-to-Fork capital will alert your taste-buds to the surrounding region's countless farmer's markets, breweries, wineries, and food and farm tours. Sacramento invites strangers and makes them locals.
