Oscar Anderson House Museum The Alaska Association for Historic reviews and photos
Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums The Oscar Anderson House Museum, located in Anchorage, Alaska, is a significant architectural building because it was the home of a man who helped to contribute to the development of a place that would later become Alaska's largest city-Anchorage. The Oscar Anderson House was one of the first wood-framed homes in Anchorage, and it is also Anchorage's only house museum to this day. Inside of the museum, visitors can view antique furniture, family heirlooms, and artifacts from both the Anderson family's collection and donations from citizens during the 1915-1925 time period. Original photos from Tent City, where early Anchorage first began to form, can also be viewed throughout this historic home.In 1867, the U.S purchased Alaska from Russia because of it's abundance of not only natural resources, but also because the Alaska Railroad Commission decided that there were potential railroad routes that could be built for shipment of newly mined minerals. As people began to realize that there would be new construction job opportunities in Alaska, they started moving towards Ship Creek, where they pitched tents to wait for railroad construction to begin. There were 655 lots where the tents were pitched, and soon the area became known as Tent City in 1915. Later on during 1915, the lots all began to get sold for business and housing developments in what was known as the 1915 Land Auction. Tent City was no longer full of tents after the auction, and soon it was a regular boomtown after the railroad was built.

Anchorage, Alaska
Alaska is the largest state in the United States in land area at 570,374 square miles, over twice the size of Texas
Mount McKinley, or Denali The High One is the highest mountain in the United States and North America with an elevation of 20,320 feet.
Anchorage is Alaska's largest city with over 291,000 residents. At 61 degrees north is it slightly more northern than Oslo and Stockholm.
Because of the northern latitude, in the summer the days are very long although the temperatures rarely rise above the 70s. But that doesn't stop Alaska's residents from shedding their parkas for shorts the moment the sun appears.
Oscar Anderson was an early Anchorage resident, said to be the 18th person to set foot on the area and his house, built in 1915 was the first wood-frame house in Anchorage.
The Glacier Brewhouse is both a brewery and one of Anchorage's top restaurants. The place gets busy early so it is a good idea to make reservations. Aside from rotisserie meats the menu features lots of fresh local seafood. And who ever had fresh raspberry whet beer? The brewhouse was brewing it and it was delicious. Alaska glacier bottled water is a great way to taste the purity of the environment around Anchorage. This bottled water is a popular drink for Asians who visit and refer glaciers. Although there were rave reviews about the seafood chowder and the calamari, I tried the pita with hummus which was a great appetizer that went well with the raspberry wheat beer.
One can't be in Alaska without tasting king crab legs. The fresh version is more spectacular than the deep freeze version we get in the lower 48. Alaskan halibut also shines over their southern neighbors and at Glacier Brewhouse they serve it with a healthy balsamic salad and a not so healthy side of fries.
A popular street food are reindeer hot dogs which are actually a blend of pork sausage and reindeer. I didn't taste it but I understand it is a must try, unless you are Santa Claus. There are lots of tourist shops selling made in China souvenirs but if you want something that is truly Alaskan and unique, The Oomingmak Qiviut shop is an Alaskan native cooperative that produces Muskox products.
It is owned by approximately 250 Native Alaskan women from remote coastal villages of Alaska who knit each item by hand. Each village has a signature pattern derived from traditional aspects of village life and the Eskimo culture; they may come from an ancient artifact or a beadwork design.
The name Musk Ox is deceiving, as the animal does not produce musk, nor is it related to cattle. Skeletal and behavioral studies show a closer relationship to sheep and goats Qiviut is shed naturally each year during the spring months.
About 40 miles south of Anchorage is the Alyeska ski resort -- even in May there is abundant snow -- although skiers were not about. It has an average of 643 of annual snowfall and is known for its steep terrain. For off piste skiing - Chugach Powder Guides operate snowcat or helicopter adventure in the world-famous Chugach Mountain Range. Helicopters guarantee 16 - 20,000 vertical feet of skiing per day. The cost $1125 per person. If that price is unbearable ... the normal day ski lift pass is $60 for an adult.
Not far from Alyeska is Portage and the home of the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. The center takes in injured and orphaned animals and many who cannot be released into the wild are given a permanent home at the center.
Snickers, the porcupine is one such creature that was raised in a home and has a lot of personality .. so much so that a youtube video featuring him with almost 1.8 million views. (youtube.com/watch?v=U5I5H7EeC8k)
The center had recently taken in three orphaned moose calves who keep the four-year old moose Jack company. Jack had arrived at the center as a 3-day old moose with bite marks and a broken leg .. and a 20% chance of survival.
Muskox who's warm fur is used in making Qiviut products are an arctic survivor. Their thick coat grows up to 36 inches long.
The wood bison were extinct from Alaska until they were reintroduced in 2003. They are the largest land animal in North America.
Bears are also residents at the center including brown bears, black bears and a grizzly bear.
Heading south toward the coastal town of Whittier brings one to the Whittier tunnel. This is the longest combined railroad car tunnel in North America and connects the commuters between the Prince William Sound and Turnagain Arm. The tunnel opened in 1943.
Whittier is home to lots of sea life from birds, to sea otters, seals, whales, and sea lions.
In 1964 a 9.2 magnitude earthquake (the largest ever recorded in North America)
generated a major tectonic tsunami. The waves destroyed Girdwood and Portage and evidence of the damage today is still visible from the dead wood forests in the area.

Laurel Bill on Alaska Story Time with Aunt Phil, First frame house Anchorage 1915
On this episode of Alaska Story Time with Aunt Phil, Alaska author/historian Laurel Downing Bill features Oscar Anderson, Anchorage’s first butcher, who built the first frame house in Anchorage. By his own account, Anderson was among the first group of people to set foot in the settlement on Ship Creek early in 1915.
By his own account, Anderson was among the first group of people to set foot in the settlement on Ship Creek early in 1915. The native of Sweden had taken a steamer from Seattle to Seward, then walked three days along a trail toward Knik. He stayed overnight with a Finnish trapper before pushing on to Knik, which at the time was the largest supply settlement in Cook Inlet.
In his later years, Anderson told the story of his arrival (which is printed on a kiosk in front of the home in Elderberry Park).
“Everyone talked about the new settlement starting across Cook Inlet from Knik. I had to find a way to cross over, which was no easy matter, as there was a lot of ice on the Inlet and no one wanted to risk it. Finally, a 19-year-old youth who had a boat volunteered to row me across. It was no pleasure trip. At one point, the boy fell in the water. We pulled onto a large block of ice. I took out some dry clothes from my suitcase and we changed his clothes. After that, I had to finish rowing.”
By Anderson’s account, he was the 18th person to set foot in the tent city at the mouth of Ship Creek. He soon partnered with Louis Jensen and started a butcher shop, Ship Creek Meat Market on Fourth Avenue, where Stuart’s Photo now resides.
Visitors taking the tour of Anderson’s house get a glimpse into a forgotten era as a historian talks about Anchorage’s history and shows off items like a wind-up phonograph, a Hallet and Davis player piano and a wire “soap saver.”
As one follows the tour up creaking wooden steps to view the three bedrooms on the upper floor, it’s easy to believe the tales some people tell that Anderson, who with his family lived in the house for nearly 60 years, still lingers in the form of a ghost.
Following Anderson’s death in 1974, at the age of 91, a young couple moved into the house and soon reported hearing noises upstairs, like someone walking around. One morning they couldn’t open the door to his old room and found a chest had mysteriously slid in front of it and blocked the entrance.
Anderson’s widow, Elizabeth, who’d moved to Washington state after she sold the house, was delighted when she heard about the strange occurrences. She said she always knew Oscar loved the house too much to ever leave it.
This segment aired on CBS Anchorage affiliate KTVA Channel 11 Daybreak on June 20, 2016.

Kincaid Park Photos & Reviews Anchorage Area, Alaska Department
Kincaid Park is named for Ralph Kincaid, an early homesteader in the Sand Lake area. Mr. Kincaid founded Granite Products, Inc., which later became known as Kincaid & King Construction. His construction company contributed equipment and services for the construction of several playing fields and playgrounds throughout Anchorage. Kincaid was also an early leader in bringing Little League Baseball to Anchorage.“Kincaid Park” was originally a 27 acre tract of land located near the northeast side of Jewel Lake. In the mid-1960’s the Municipality of Anchorage acquired land near the Airport and Kincaid Park was relocated to this site.As of 1973, the Kincaid Park Master Plan outlined a multi-use area comprising 120 acres near Little Campbell Lake. The Municipality of Anchorage accessed this land through a land use permit from the State, and further owned 389 acres off of Jodphur Street. Until 1975, there was a junk car crushing operation at the site off of Jodphur Street. In 1973, the Parks & Recreation Department issued a permit to develop cross country ski trails at the Little Campbell Lake site. In 1974 Anchorage hosted the FIS Cross Country Ski Championships using these trails.Kincaid grew to its present size through a land transfer from the Air Force in 1980. In 1959, the military base at Kincaid became host to the first operational Nike-Hercules Unit. The site housed one of the most advanced radar systems of the day, maintained 24 hours a day with 100 men on alert seven days a week. The missile battery was deactivated in 1979 and assigned to the jurisdiction of Elmendorf Air Force Base. The Air Force transferred the land to the Municipality of Anchorage through the Federal Land Surplus Act on November 25, 1980.In 1983, the Municipality assigned the land to the Parks & Recreation Department. In 1985, Parks & Recreation commenced construction of the Kincaid Outdoor Center, using one of the existing Nike Hercules missile silos. Another bunker was remodeled to accommodate large groups.

Anchorage Tour of Tony Knowles Coastal Trail & Westchester Lagoon (4K)
After our cruise ship dropped us off in downtown Anchorage, we did the city trolley tour, visited the Alaska Public Lands museum, and then hiked part of the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. It was a nice serene walk with good views. Never seen Mud Flats up close so that was a first for us. There were lots of birds, and thankfully we didn't bump into any bear. It was a nice day and lots of local folks were enjoying the trail. We ended the ~45 minute hike at the scenic Westchester Lagoon/Margaret Eagan Sullivan Park. There is a nice playscape there for kids and our son enjoyed some time there.

SUMMARY
=======
Anchorage (officially called the Municipality of Anchorage; Dena'ina: Dgheyaytnu) is a unified home rule municipality in the U.S. state of Alaska. With an estimated 298,192 residents in 2016, it is Alaska's most populous city and contains more than 40 percent of the state's total population; among the 50 states, only New York has a higher percentage of residents who live in its most populous city. All together, the Anchorage metropolitan area, which combines Anchorage with the neighboring Matanuska-Susitna Borough, had a population of 401,635 in 2016, which accounts for more than half of the state's population. At 1,706 square miles of land area, the city is larger than the smallest state, Rhode Island, at 1,212 square miles.Anchorage is in the south-central portion of Alaska, at the terminus of the Cook Inlet, on a peninsula formed by the Knik Arm to the north and the Turnagain Arm to the south. The city limits span 1,961.1 square miles (5,079.2 km2) which encompass the urban core, a joint military base, several outlying communities and almost all of Chugach State Park.Due to its location, almost equidistant from New York City, Frankfurt, and Tokyo, Anchorage lies within 9 1⁄2 hours by air of nearly 90% of the industrialized world. For this reason, the Anchorage International Airport is a common refueling stop for many international cargo flights and home to a major FedEx hub, which the company calls a critical part of its global network of services.Anchorage has won the All-America City Award four times: in 1956, 1965, 1984–85, and 2002, by the National Civic League. It has also been named by Kiplinger as the most tax-friendly city in the United States.
Laurel Bill on Alaska Story Time with Aunt Phil, Knik withers
Author/speaker Laurel Downing Bill on Alaska Story Time with Aunt Phil features how Knik, once the largest town in Cook Inlet region with 500 residents, withered away after the Alaska Railroad bypassed it to build the Alaska Railroad close to Wasilla in 1915-1917.
When the U.S. Post Office opened its branch in Knik on Oct. 27, 1904, it signaled that Knik was a bone fide community. But it only remained open for 13 years because of the Federal government’s decision to bypass it when it laid out its plans for a railroad to connect Seward to Fairbanks in 1915.
Thousands of gold seekers had streamed into Cook Inlet by the late 1800s. These people hacked out primitive trails connecting scattered camps and eventually unified the region between Cook Inlet on the south and the Talkeetna Mountains on the north, and the Matanuska River on the east and the Susitna River in the west.
Although few of the prospectors who entered Cook Inlet became rich, a small Dena’ina Athabascan settlement called Knik had enough commercial activity that the Alaska Commercial Co., which had taken over the assets of the Russian American Co., opened a trading post there in 1882. (Some say Knik means “fire,” and other sources say it means “among the islands.”)
Russian clergy journals noted that the Natives of Old Knik moved their village to New Knik (Eklutna) in 1897 – perhaps because so many gold miners were flooding into the area. They even took the St. Nicholas chapel with them. The Natives did help the miners, though, working as guides, chopping logs, packing freight and in many other ways.
Knik’s population grew to several hundred as hard rock followed placer mining. And the discovery of gold in the Interior in 1902-03 helped to keep their hopes afloat. That discovery, near what would become Fairbanks, led to more intense mining everywhere.
Discoveries of gold north of Knik in the Talkeetna Mountains, as well as placer gold northwest on the Iditarod River, made the community across the Turnagain Arm from modern-day Birchwood the major trading center for the gold and coal mines in the region. At its peak, Knik boasted a population close to 500 and was the largest town on Cook Inlet.
But after railroad engineers laid out a route for the tracks 13 miles north of Knik, and established a railroad camp at a place called Wasilla, many Knik businesses and residents moved to that new settlement. Knik eventually died. The old pool hall, now the Knik Museum, and a small empty cabin that sits nearby are the only original buildings left of this once-thriving community.
