1970s DELTA QUEEN MISSISSIPPI STEAMBOAT PROMOTIONAL FILM 79654
Created to promote the steamboat Delta Queen, this charming film shows the vessel as it appeared in the early 1970s. The film shows some of the modern equipment added to the ship to keep it in operation, while highlighting the trip back in time that the steamboat made possible -- back to the days of Mark Twain. The film was made by Greene Line Steamers and produced by Lee Strosnider and features the song Delta Queen, My Time Machine written by George Tassian and performed by John Hartford. it was directed by Bill Muster. The film was widely used to promote preservation of the ship, and during the last four months of 1972, the film played on numerous TV shows and at private showings for groups, clubs, churches, etc. as part of that effort.
The Delta Queen is an American sternwheel steamboat. Historically, she has been used for cruising the major rivers that constitute the tributaries of the Mississippi River, particularly in the American South. She was docked in Chattanooga, Tennessee and served as a floating hotel until she was bought by the newly formed Delta Queen Steamboat Company. She was towed to Houma, Louisiana, in March 2015 to be refurbished to her original condition. The Delta Queen is 285 feet (87 m) long, 58 feet (18 m) wide, and draws 11.5 feet (3.5 m). She weighs 1,650 tons (1,676 metric tons), with a capacity of 176 passengers. Her cross-compound steam engines generate 2,000 indicated horsepower (1,500 kW), powering a stern-mounted paddlewheel. Built in 1927, she is the last surviving steam-powered overnight passenger boat plying the watershed of the Mississippi. She was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989.
The hull, first two decks, and steam engines were ordered in 1924 from the William Denny & Brothers shipyard on the River Leven adjoining the River Clyde at Dumbarton, Scotland. Delta Queen and her sister, Delta King, were shipped in pieces to Stockton, California in 1926. There the California Transportation Company assembled the two vessels for their regular Sacramento River service between San Francisco and Sacramento, and excursions to Stockton, on the San Joaquin River. At the time, they were the most lavishly appointed and expensive sternwheel passenger boats ever commissioned. Driven out of service by a new highway linking Sacramento with San Francisco in 1940, the two vessels were laid up and then purchased by Isbrandtsen Steamship Lines for service out of New Orleans. During World War II, they were requisitioned by the United States Navy for duty in San Francisco Bay as USS Delta Queen (YHB-7/YFB-56). During the war the vessels were painted battleship gray and used in transporting wounded from ocean-going ships in San Francisco Bay to area hospitals.
Three different United States Presidents have sailed on Delta Queen: Herbert Hoover, Harry Truman, and Jimmy Carter.
In 1946, Delta Queen was purchased by Greene Line of Cincinnati, Ohio and towed via the Panama Canal and the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers to be refurbished in Pittsburgh. On that ocean trip she was piloted by Frederick Way, Jr. In 1948 she entered regular passenger service, plying the waters of the Ohio, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Cumberland Rivers between Cincinnati, New Orleans, St. Paul, Chattanooga, Nashville, and ports in between. Ownership of the vessel has changed seven times over the last fifty years.
In 1966, Congress passed the first Safety at Sea Law that would put the Delta Queen out of business. After consulting with attorney William Kohler, Richard Simonton, Bill Muster, and Edwin Jay Quinby traveled to Washington, DC, to save their boat. As chairman of the board of Greene Line Steamers, Jay Quinby testified before the Senate to ask for an exemption to the law. Greene Line had to renegotiate the exemption every two to four years. Thanks to the efforts of Betty Blake and Bill Muster, the Delta Queen was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and was subsequently declared a National Historic Landmark in 1989.
One unusual feature of Delta Queen is her steam calliope, mounted on the Texas deck aft of the pilot house.
In 1974, Charlie Waller & The Country Gentlemen recorded a song on their Remembrances & Forecasts album written by Leroy Drumm and Pete Goble titled Delta Queen, to which Leroy was inspired to write after having seen her running down the Tennessee River in the early 1970s.

When The River Roared
During the recent thousand year flood in Middle Tennessee, many residents found themselves cut off from the outside world. For those able to get out, too many found they had no homes to return to.
I am one of the lucky ones whose house was on high ground and experienced no significant damage. But for several days, dozens of residents in my rural neighborhood near the Narrows Of The Harpeth State Park were on our own little island. There were three ways in and out of our neighborhood and all were impassable. The Harpeth River in our area is normally a slow moving, peaceful river that is shallow enough in spots that summer canoeists have to walk their canoes over sandbars. In my immediate area, The Narrows of the Harpeth is a well-maintained state park that had canoe ramps, river access roads and a series of wooden steps leading to the first man-made tunnel in the United States. All were destroyed. I don't think anyone who knows this area ever imagined in their wildest dreams that such a peaceful little river could rise up to the levels it did and cause so much devastation. It is no exaggeration to say that during the flood of 2010, this river truly did roar.
As a television producer with a background in news and production, I was torn between feeling like I should document what was happening with a strong desire to not be exploitative of other people's losses. So, I decided to tell the only story I could reliably talk about. My own.
As such, this little film makes no attempt to be a comprehensive look at an epic natural disaster. Rather, it is one person's look at one rural neighborhood in one part of a very large affected region. Looking back, I see in my own accounts where emotion got the best of me and I mistakenly referred to the bridge at times when I meant the road to the bridge. (I always just refer to that whole stretch of road and bridge going over the river as the bridge.) But I think it's important to show those things, warts and all, because this really is an in the moment account. I'm not sure much other footage exists, if any, of this particular location during the flood so I think it has value for that reason if nothing else.
Everyone I know in Nashville knows someone who lost everything they own. But how the entire Middle Tennessee region has responded to this disaster is truly inspirational. I witnessed and documented one such example which is found at the end of this film.
I will always be grateful to my country neighbors and the residents of the Leatherwood / Cedar Hill Road community for their determination to help each other and literally rise above whatever nature threw at us. It has always been a privilege to live in such a historically significant and naturally beautiful part of the country. Now, after the flood, I consider myself even luckier.

Queen of the Mississippi Cruise Ship Tour - American River Cruise Line
English Captions Available!!!
Queen of the Mississippi, initially American Eagle, is an overnight riverboat claimed and worked by American Cruise Lines (ACL). She entered benefit in Spring 2015 and was worked by Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, Maryland for overnight stream cruising inside the mainland United States. The vessel obliges 150 travelers in her 84 staterooms . The vessel is a sister ship of a comparative outline to American Pride, which initially conveyed the Queen of the Mississippi name from 2012-2015. Nonetheless, there are a few contrasts between the vessels like interior game plan and lodges on the fifth deck. Like her sister transport, all have private showers, windows, Wi-Fi, and inside doorways.
Ruler of the Mississippi entered benefit in 2015, joining her sister vessel American Pride. American Cruise Lines has not said if the name change to Ruler of the Mississippi is perpetual or brief until the beforehand declared trade vessel for American Pride dispatches in 2017.
Her stern-mounted paddlewheel is driven by a water driven engine, fueled by diesel motors. This is enlarged by two Z-drive units to give a higher cruising pace and better mobility.
The ship deck plans:
1st Deck - double and single occupancy staterooms; dining room
2nd Deck - double and single occupancy staterooms, all with private balconies; three lounges
3rd Deck - owners suites, double and single occupancy staterooms, all with sliding doors to private balconies; library
4th Deck - owners suites, double and single occupancy staterooms, all with sliding doors to private balconies; two lounges
5th Deck - Pilot house, double and single occupancy staterooms, promenade, shaded public area, sundeck, putting green

American Queen Steamboat spins at Red Wing Marina as steam calliope plays. (Shorter Faster Version)
American Queen river boat makes a u-turn in front of Red Wing Marina in Red Wing, MN on the Mississippi River. It was such a narrow part of the channel that you can see it moving the channel markers in the process. You also get to see the smoke stacks lower so they can make it under the Eisenhower Bridge (Hwy 63). The music you here is the real Steam calliope that plays every time they leave port. The American Queen is claimed to be the largest Steamboat at 418 feet and has a beam of 89 feet. This is a shortened version of my original video with the video sped up and a couple of random buts edited out of the video. The original video is here:
From Wikipedia
American Queen is said to be the largest river steamboat ever built. The ship was built in 1995 and is a six-deck recreation of a classic Mississippi riverboat, built by McDermott Shipyard for the Delta Queen Steamboat Company. Although the American Queen's stern paddlewheel is indeed powered by a genuine steam plant, her secondary propulsion, in case of an emergency and for maneuverability around tight areas where the paddle wheel can not navigate, comes from a set of diesel-electric propellers known as Z-drives on either side of the sternwheel. She has 222 state rooms for a capacity of 436 guests and a crew of 160. She is 418 feet (127 m) long and 89 feet (27 m) wide.
The Str. American Queen was retired to the reserve fleet in Violet, Louisiana, on 20 November 2008. Due to the failure of Majestic America Line (her owner) she was returned to the United States Maritime Administration (MARAD) who held her $30 million mortgage. As of April 2011 American Queen is under contract for $15.5 million to HMS Global Maritime, based in New Albany, Indiana. The new operator, The American Queen Steamboat Company announced plans to return her to Mississippi River service from a port in Memphis, Tennessee. She rejoined her fellow sternwheeler steamboats Natchez, Chautauqua Belle, Minne-Ha-Ha, and the Belle of Louisville. She is currently in service.
In April 2012, the 436-passenger American Queen began a season of three- to 10-night voyages out of a variety of southern and Midwest homeports, including Saint Paul, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Natchez, Vicksburg, Pittsburgh, Louisville, Cincinnati, St. Louis and Memphis.
In 2012 the American Queen participated for the first time in the Great Steamboat Race. It came in second place.
The American Queen Steamboat is a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
