In Utah, the spectacular Paria Canyon/Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness Area is about 45 miles east of Kanab. The Wilderness area encompasses 112,000 acres of redrock canyons and upthrust fault mountains.
Coyote Buttes is a Special Management Area of the Paria Canyon/Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness. It has become one of the most popular destinations for many people visiting the Colorado Plateau. It is colorful but fragile Navajo Sandstone slickrock. The attraction is the thin ledges that swirl in wild contours of color and stone that are Coyotte Buttes Northvery brittle and breakable. It has grown as an attraction over the years due to the many published photographs and other media coverage of this small area. Nature has fully used its imagination to converge with the appreciation of our individual minds in all their variety of thought and wonder.
Before highways and railways, before pioneers, even before Columbus...the land we know as the United States was truly a vast wilderness. To protect these last remaining areas, in 1984, Congress created the Paria Canyon/Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness. Coyote Buttes' outstanding scenery, desert wildlife, colorful history, and opportunities for primitive recreation will remain free from the influence of man and are protected in this condition for future generations. Its 112,000 acres beckon adventurers who yearn for solitude, scenic splendor, and the chance to explore one of the most beautiful geologic formations in the world.

The Paria Mountains
Paria or Pahreah, is a ghost town on the Paria River in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in central Kane County, Utah, United States. It was inhabited from 1870 to 1929, and later used as a filming location.
The area was first settled in 1865 by a Mormon group led by Peter Shirts. This early settlement was named Rockhouse, for Shirts's strongly built sandstone house. After the end of the Black Hawk War in 1867 settlers began to arrive at a rapid pace.

Paria Canyon Hike Utah Arizona Border (HD, GoPro)
This was the last day of a 6 day trip driving, hiking and camping in the desert southwest of Utah and Arizona. Paria Canyon was my favorite day because it was the most remote, we did not see another person all day. The temps during the day hit in the mid one hundreds so we started out at first light and were back at camp by noon.
The Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, a 112,000-acre reserve located on the border of southern Utah and northern Arizona, was established by Congress in 1984 in the Arizona Wilderness Act. Part of the wilderness area was later incorporated into the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument by President Bill Clinton in 2000. The wilderness area includes many plateaus, escarpments, and slot canyons.

Mylungpuppy is the channel of musician Ron Anderson.
I have been making avant-music for over forty years in a number of different projects; PAK, The Molecules, RonRuins, Oblique Quartet and numerous collaborations and solo. I combine composition and improvisation exploring the regions where they intersect. Sometimes my music is brutal, but I’m not afraid of melody, in general my work is pretty much out there.
The main focus of my channel is music, but I also make vlogs on various subjects, cycling, touring and traveling, vegan food, rare vinyl LPs, audio field recordings, etc. Because not everyone is going to be interested in all the subjects covered on this channel, I have made playlists so you do not have to search through videos to find what you are looking for.
I try to answer questions and respond to as many comments as I can, any and all feedback from you is welcome.
I'm trying to make at least one or two new videos a week.

Hiking to The Wave, Arizona / Utah (HD) (GoPro)
The Wave is a sandstone rock formation located in the United States of America near the Arizona–Utah border, on the slopes of the Coyote Buttes, in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, on the Colorado Plateau. It is famous among hikers and photographers for its colorful, undulating forms, and the rugged, trackless hike required to reach it.
BLM limits access to the North Coyote Buttes Wilderness Area to just 20 permits per day.[9] Ten of the permits are available in advance by an on-line lottery conducted four months before the month for which the permit is sought. The remaining ten permits are made available by lottery the day before one's intended hike.[10] Year-round the lottery is held at the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument Visitor Center in Kanab, Utah. The lottery for the walk-in permits takes place at 9:00 in the morning
From the Wire Pass Trailhead, The Wave can be reached by hiking approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) across open desert, making the round-trip to and from The Wave nearly 6-mile (9.7 km) climbing about 350 feet (110 m) in altitude.
Temperatures in this area typically climb above 100 °F (38 °C) in the summer, so it is best to start the hike early. Anyone attempting the hike in any season is wise to be prepared for harsh desert conditions, including fierce winds, blowing sand, and no shade.

Slot Canyon near the Paria River in S Utah
Driving in a slot canyon near the Paria River in southern Utah.
Let's Hike: Buckskin Gulch
Buckskin Gulch carves a 12-mile gash through the desert of southern Utah and is the longest and deepest slot canyon in the United States (and possibly the world). Backpacker Magazine designated it as America's Most Dangerous hike due to the danger of extreme flash flooding without any means of easy escape from the canyon due to it's size. However, when the weather is cooperating this is an awesome 2-day backpacking trip through some amazing canyon scenery. We did the Wire Pass through Whitehouse route, hiking the 12 miles of Buckskin Gulch to it's confluence with Paria Canyon and then an additional 7 miles or so up Paria Canyon to the waiting car.

Pariah Canyon & River by Horseback
The Pariah Canyon is located in the Pariah Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness National Monument on the border of the American states of Arizona and Utah. The canyon has been, and continues to be, carved out by the Pariah River. The canyon is made up of dramatic red rock cliffs, buttes and escarpments. On par, if not superior, to Canyon de Chelly in the northeast corner of Arizona. The two horses being ridden are featured in the western movie, Bannock.

Paria Canyon - Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness Area
Nationally known for its beauty, the Paria Canyon has towering walls streaked with desert varnish, huge red rock amphitheaters, sandstone arches, wooded terraces, and hanging gardens. The 3,000-foot escarpment known as the Vermilion Cliffs dominates the remainder of the wilderness with its thick Navajo sandstone face, steep, boulder-strewn slopes, rugged arroyos and stark overall appearance. Some of the best slot canyon hiking opportunities on the Colorado Plateau are found here.

Hiking The Wave
We were very fortunate to win the BLM hiking lottery in Kanab, Utah, U.S.A. and to experience the chance of a lifetime to do this 6 mile unmarked hike through Coyote Buttes North. Hauling a gallon of water each, and plenty of snacks. The trek took us approximately 8 hours in total. Despite the use of a compass, map and GPS we still got lost in one section when we started to follow a group of four people up a hill. Fortunately we didn't go very far as a park volunteer came along and steered us in the right direction. The rest of the route went well and the Wave itself was beyond spectacular. Hope you will enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed making it.
