Hiking the Ocean Path (Maine)
First day of autumn – but a very warm day. Hiked 8 miles earlier in the day, but couldn’t resist hiking 4 more miles in the late afternoon at this very scenic paved path/trail called Ocean Path. We start at Sand Beach – one of 2 swimming beaches in Acadia, then encounter the trail head for Ocean Path. It closely parallels the jagged coastline and the Park Loop Road. It continues for 2 miles until it reaches Otter Point at the south end of the peninsula. There are many places along the path where the hiker can venture toward the coast and explore. Late afternoon attracts many photographers seeking a perch on the rocks to capture that perfect sunset shot. This path has a long history. The philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr. recognized the future need for public access to the shore and commissioned the paving of this trail. In 1933, the Civilian Conservation Corps made many improvements that exist today. Ocean Path is a must for anyone visiting Acadia and late afternoon offers the best views. Some tall waves crashing onto the rocks would have made for more dramatic scenes, but alas, the ocean was calm for the entire 10 days I was there…but it did allow me to venture onto the rocks close to the waterline.

Active Matter Summit: Session 6
In recent decades, developments in software and hardware technologies have created dramatic shifts in design, manufacturing and research. Software technologies have facilitated automated process and new solutions for complex problems. Computation has also become a platform for creativity through generative art and design. New hardware platforms and digital fabrication technologies have similarly transformed manufacturing, offering more efficient production and mass customization. Such advances have helped catalyzed the maker-movement, democratizing design and maker culture. This influx of new capabilities to design, compute and fabricate like never before, has sparked a renewed interest in material performance.
We are now witnessing significant advances in active matter, 3D/4D Printing, materials science, synthetic biology, DNA nanotechnology and soft robotics, which have led to the convergence of software, hardware and material technologies and the growing field of programmable materials.
This conference was about the emerging field of active matter and programmable materials that bridges the worlds of art, science, engineering and design, demonstrating new perspectives for computation, transformation and dynamic material applications.
If over the past few decades we have experienced a software revolution, and more recently, a hardware revolution, this conference aims to discuss the premises, challenges and innovations brought by today’s materials revolution. We can now sense, compute, and actuate with materials alone, just as we could with software and hardware platforms previously. How does this shift influence materials research, and how does it shape the future of design, arts, and industrial applications? What tools and design processes do we need to advance, augment and invent new materials today? What are the key roles that industry, government, academic and public institutions can play in catalyzing the field of programmable materials?
This two-day conference consisted of a range of talks and lively discussion from leading researchers in materials science, art & design, synthetic biology and soft-robotics along with leaders from government, public institutions and industry.

Here is the transcript of this video:
Dutton-Lainson couplers are initially assembled in our manufacturing facility to snugly fit on most 2 balls, but they are designed to be easily adjusted by hand without the need for tools if necessary.
If you cannot lower the coupler over your ball, or if you can get the coupler over the ball but then cannot lower the locking lever into place, your coupler is too tight and needs to be loosened.
To do this, move the locking lever to the unlocked position, push up the nut locking channel and ball clamp with your fingers, then spin the lock nut several turns counterclockwise towards the ground. Let go of the channel lock and ball clamp making sure that the flats on the nut fit inside the nut locking channel and that the channel is perpendicular to the sides of the coupler, then try to close the coupler over the ball again. Repeat as necessary until it feels nice and tight as the lever goes down.
To test if you've adjusted the coupler tight enough, grab onto the coupler and shake it a bit. This should move the coupler, ball, hitch, and trailer tongue in unison like you see here, meaning the coupler is properly adjusted, and the coupler should not rattle on the ball or move independently from it like you see here, meaning that it is too loose.
If it is too loose, open up the coupler, push up the nut locking channel and ball clamp again, then rotate the lock nut several turns clockwise away from the ground. Again make sure the nut fits properly in the locking channel and the locking channel is aligned properly with the sides of the coupler. Close the coupler over the ball, and repeat as necessary until it feels nice and tight as the lever goes down. Perform the shake test to make sure the coupler is snugly and correctly adjusted.

Appalachian Trail Loner #79 BEAR MOUNTAIN 2012 Thru Hike
Please click “Show More” to read an excerpt from my new book ‘Painted Blazes’ Hiking the Appalachian trail with Loner. Available on Amazon…
I hope it entertains, educates, and encourages people to hike! Please enjoy, like, sub, share, and spread the word!
Begin excerpt:
It’s a hiker’s instinct to get moving, so it was excruciating waiting for someone to come unlock the tower’s door.
Perkins Tower, a unique structure built of granite stones by the CCC in 1934, is 5 stories high with pairs of perpendicular, rectangular windows on all 4 sides of each floor. This purpose-built observation tower was named after George Walbridge Perkins Sr., founder and first president of Palisades Interstate Park Commission.
B&W images, printed on wall tiles, depicted antique buses, huge steamboats and massive troops of Boy Scouts. The top floor had a commanding view and at 1,305’, on a clear day you can see into 4 states: NY, NJ, PA and CT - or with help of those silver colored, coin-operated machines called “tower viewers.”
FUN FACT: Tower Optical, founded in 1932, only manufactures about 35 tower viewers each year, but thousands more are maintained by the company. Viewers can hold up to $500 in quarters.
I finally resumed heading north, and more snack machines were stationed at Hessian Lake, including a bright yellow, full-size M&M’s dispenser also offering Skittles and the like. Another machine vended 20 different kinds of popsicles. This was my kind of place! Visiting a snack bar, I had been craving a mouthwatering pepper steak sub, but prices were sky high so I only bought a small order of french-fries. Sneaking up in slow-motion, a tame grey squirrel leapt onto the picnic table across from me, laid down like a dog and started eyeballing my fries! Tossing him one, a couple of southbound section hikers and I laughed as he fetched it. College girls from New York, these 2 were looking to meet up with thru-hiker friends in the area. One chick with punk rock hair gave me a green apple. In some primitive countries, that means we’re engaged! Too bad she wasn’t hiking north.
Bear Mountain Carousel had wooden chariots and hand carved critters to ride on, including black bear, deer, fox and so on. Even a skunk. Hares appeared to be hopping and bobcats pouncing. Sadly, no joyful merry-go-round music was playing, because the pavilion is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Fun should never close! End excerpt.

A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs
John Carter, an American Civil War veteran, goes prospecting in Arizona and, when set upon by Indians, is mysteriously transported to Mars, called Barsoom by its inhabitants. Carter finds that he has great strength on this planet, due to its lesser gravity. Carter soon falls in among the Tharks, a nomadic tribe of the planet's warlike, four-armed, green inhabitants. Thanks to his strength and combat abilities he rises in position in the tribe and earns the respect eventually the friendship of Tars Tarkas one of the Thark chiefs.
The Tharks subsequently capture Dejah Thoris, Princess of Helium, a member of the humanoid red Martian race. The red Martians inhabit a loose network of city states and control the desert planet's canals, along which its agriculture is concentrated. Carter rescues her from the green men to return her to her people. (Summary from Wikipedia)
