IS ALASKA RIGHT FOR YOU? - How to Travel to Alaska
First of all, if you’ve never looked at a road map of Alaska, check out google maps for a minute. There are VERY few roads in the entire state. So unless you’re a bush plane pilot there are really only a few locations that are even accessible by car.

We’ve divided Alaska in to the 3 most visited regions in the state:
1. Interior Alaska: the home of Fairbanks, The Dalton Highway, Denali National Park and the cute town of Talkeetna
The Kenai Peninsula
In our opinion, if you are flying in or driving to Alaska you really can have a TOTAL Alaska experience by just visiting the Kenai Peninsula. Here’s 8 quick reasons:
1. People fly in from all over the world just to fish the salmon in the Russian River.
2. If you’re looking for other fishing, you can always book Halibut fishing out of Homer or Seward/seward. Hope you catch more fish than we did.
3. Kenai Fjords National Park is home to the Harding icefield and its 30 outflowing glaciers….or nearly 40 glaciers. The National Park site said both numbers. We can all agree that’s a lot of ice.
4. The Kenai is packed with wildlife: bald eagles, humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, sheep, bears…just to name a few. If you’re as bad at spotting wildlife as we are, you can always visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and see just about everything including musk ox, which might be our new favorite friends.
5. In the Kenai peninsula alone you’ll find some of Alaska’s best museums, aquarium and again, the Alaska wildlife conservation center. You should seriously go here. They have Musk Ox, again, which are awesome.
6. This is also one of the best jump off points scenic flights or sea plane adventures, including a trip over to Katmai National Park: Home of the famous brooks falls for brown bear viewing. Maybe you can get a shot of a fish going into a bears mouth. We didn’t.
7. The Alaska Railroad comes down here for a reason. It’s a beautiful trainride which we didn’t take ourselves, but we saw them next to us on the road pretty often. The road was beautiful drive therefore the train must be a beautiful ride. Also, online reviews say its awesome.
8. Whether you're hoping to explore mountains or ocean, from the coastal rain forests around Seward and Kodiak to the rough Arctic chill of glaciers flowing off the Harding Icefield—there’s a huge range of diversity here.

ABOUT US:
We’re traveling full time, living on our own terms and showing you the up-close-and-personal details of us figuring it out along the way. Sometimes it’s about navigating big, life-altering decisions. Sometimes it’s about navigating the seemingly lawless free-for-all that is driving in Hanoi. It’s moments of triumph and moments of panic. The good, the bad, the ugly – and most importantly, the real and real funny.
We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.” Just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem. We believe the world’s a more interesting place when people reject convention in favor of what they actually care about. This is us putting that idea to the test – one budget spreadsheet, RV renovation and mountain-peak drone video at a time.
'The dead are here.' Walk inside a notorious Anchorage hotel
Derelict and dangerous, according to city inspectors, the Northern Lights Hotel has loomed vacant over Midtown Anchorage for more than a decade. This year may be the year that it comes down, with demolition expected by mid-2017.
Today, KTUU is publishing a first look at how the interior of the building has decayed over the years and became a makeshift home for trespassers, based on reports, photos and video obtained through a public records request to the city. (See a gallery of photos at the bottom of this story. An eight-minute clip filmed by city inspectors can be found above.)
With inspectors planning to visit the property again Friday, according to Anchorage Fire Chief Denis LeBlanc, these images and videos show what building safety and fire officials found when they walked the hotel floor-by-floor Sept. 28, 2016.
The Building Safety Division described the scene in a subsequent report:
“In general, each floor had the same conditions of exposed elevator shafts, debris in stairwells and hallways, water damage due to open exterior windows and roofing issues ... As we went up the floors we observed substantial amounts of dead birds, bird feces and live birds. Evidence of vagrants living in the structure was also evident.”
Fire Marshal Cleo Hill said her team hopes to see improvements, such as secured elevator shafts and the removal of fire hazards, when they return to the property at 598 W. Northern Lights Boulevard tomorrow.
Derrick Chang, the registered agent for hotel owner Emerald Investments as well as Fourth Avenue Theater owner Peach Investments, did not immediately return phone calls. In June, Chang told KTUU that the owners were “not very motivated to do anything except secure the building.”
That changed three months later after city fire and building safety officials obtained a warrant to search the building. They found that the owners had failed to prevent illegal entry to the hotel and failed to remove potential hazards to firefighters who might have to search the hotel to rescue vagrants, as required under a 2006 agreement, according to a report by fire inspector James Gray.
A spokesman for the property owner, along with attorney Russ Winner, said that both the owners and the city are on the same page and hoping to begin demolition in the spring. Asbestos abatement required by the Environmental Protection Agency pushed demolition back slightly, they said.
Winner noted that there have been no deaths in the building and said the owners have worked hard to keep it secure and inaccessible to trespassers.
The day after the inspection, the owners applied for a demolition permit, the fire marshal said.
“Right now the plan is, no later than June 15, that building will no longer be on that property, she said.

Alaskan Fall Beautiful landcape a view from above 720p HD
While Alaska is usually associated with winter, the gigantic USA state has areas in its southern portions with much more temperate climates and millions of decidious (leaf-bearing) trees. In these areas, while Fall is but a short period between a short summer and a long winter, the landscape turns to brilliant colors in this period. Contributor Alaska42 gives us a marvelous bird's eye view of an Alaskan Fall in this amazing drone video
1. Rates Are Much Cheaper
As the calendar makes its way through August and turns to September, the bottom falls out of the demand, and the supply is suddenly in your favor. Whether in a major hub like Anchorage or a more remote location like McCarthy, room rates decrease drastically as the summer season comes to a close. For example, the same room at the Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage -- the base camp for adventures to the Talkeetna Range and Denali National Park -- can be more than a hundred dollars cheaper per night in September or October than it is in June or July.
2. Fall is When Locals Travel
As crowds dissipate and prices drop, locals take the opportunity to hit the road themselves. Seasonal workers -- honorary locals -- scramble to fit in a few last adventures before heading back to the lower-48. This means that, as a traveler, you’re much more likely to encounter a group of locals in the National Parks, fjords, and glaciers than you are, say, tour buses. “The end of the tourist season is when many Alaskans finally have the time to travel,” said Bradbury. “There’s a great local vibe during the fall because of it.”
3. The Northern Lights Are Out to Play, Minus the Crowds
Fall in Alaska brings about a significant change that’s often overlooked, or perhaps looked upon negatively. During the summer, Alaska receives nearly 24 hours of daylight, and in the winter, the opposite is true -- darkness sets in. Once fall sets in, locals are beginning to see the stars for the first time in months. “Because of the long days in the summer, we don’t start to see the stars at all until August,” says Bradberry.
While hard-core enthusiasts of the Northern Lights will wait until later in the year when there are more hours of darkness, casual crusaders might find compromise in a late September or October hunt. It’s not as cold and the days aren’t as dark, so your trip can be about much more than the hunt for the Lights. Yet, it still leaves you a chance to see them. Northern Lights tours in areas like Fairbanks are already up and running earlier in the year.
4. The Colors Change Not Just in the Trees, but on the Ground
Sure, trees are turning everywhere but there’s another kind of fall in Alaska: a vivid display that takes place on the ground. The wilderness here is full of open tundra, many without trees. In these valleys and high alpine areas, the ecosystem exists entirely on the ground in the form of riverside mosses, berry patches, and rough foliage, which undergoes a colorful change beginning in September. Blueberries ripen, moss glows vivid green, and underbrush flashes autumn colors, creating a sight to be seen that’s nearly nonexistent in the lower-48.
5. The Weather is Fine, and It’s Beautiful
The sun’s low angle during the fall is infamous for creating soft light and an alpine glow on the mountains that is, according to Bradbury, “consistently jaw dropping.” In this way, you’ll be able to see the mountains in a different light than any other time of year. It doesn’t typically snow at lower elevations this time of year, but it will snow overnight on the tops of the peaks, creating a best of both worlds: beautiful contrasts between the fall tundra and the white-capped mountains, your feet dry but the views -- and pictures -- greatly dramatized.

Top Secret SR-71 Blackbird pilot Brian Shul - May 5, 2018 - Anchorage, Alaska (4K in Chrome browser)
Retired United States Air Force Major Brian Shul was the featured speaker at the 2018 Great Alaska Aviation Gathering in Anchorage, AK. He was a pilot of the formerly Top Secret SR-71 Blackbird aircraft. The title of his speech was: The Speed of Life: Perseverance and Triumph Over Tragedy.
This is a copy of the text from the aviation gathering's website:
A highly motivating, humorous, and fascinating talk that covers some of Mr. Shul's experiences from lying near death on a jungle floor in Vietnam, to flying the world's fastest jet, the SR-71. He also talks about his present day photography and the books he has authored. Coupled with Mr. Shul's breathtaking slides taken in flight, and his philosophical views on life, this is an unforgettable presentation for all in attendance.
Brian Shul is a Vietnam War-era attack pilot and a retired major in the United States Air Force (USAF). He flew 212 combat missions and was shot down near the end of the war. He was so badly burned that he was given next to no chance to live. Surviving, he returned to full flight status, flying the SR-71 Blackbird. Major Shul completed a 20-year career in the Air Force. He has written four books on aviation and runs a photo studio in California.

It is tough to pick the best Alaskan cruise for 2020 among the 8 Princess Cruises’ ships sailing in the region this year. Given that we are partial to mega-ships, Royal Princess makes our list. This ship offers signature Princess amenities and some amazing views from the SeaWalk, a 60-foot glass walkway extending 28 feet off the side of the ship. Star Princess also makes our list this year as it offers unique 10-day round-trip voyages from San Francisco.
If you are looking for an all-inclusive feel and simple elegance during your cruise to Alaska in 2020, look no further than Viking Orion. This ship will sail from Vancouver to Seward and visit Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Sitka, Icy Strait Point, and Valdez. The best part is this trip includes seven guided tours among other amenities like complimentary WiFi, specialty dining, beer and wine at meals, bottled water, and more. These destination-focused itineraries compliment the unparalleled service and inclusive nature of the cruise line.
Finally, one of Holland America’s newest ships is also making its way to Alaska in 2020. The MS Koningsdam will be sailing 7-day round-trip cruises from Vancouver. When you need a break from sightseeing, Koningsdam offers plenty of top-notch amenities, entertainment, and dining as well, like performances on the World Stage, America’s Test Kitchen live cooking shows, and BBC Earth Experiences to bring you closer to nature.
