Melnik, 2016, Bulgaria
The town is an architectural reserve and 96 of its buildings are cultural monuments. With a population of 385, it is the smallest town in Bulgaria, retaining its city status today for historical reasons.
The unique architecture of Melnik and the nearby Rozhen Monastery (located 6 km southeast of Melnik) make it a popular tourist destination. The town is also associated with the impressive natural sand pyramids in various forms, resembling giant mushrooms, ancient towers and obelisks, spread in an area of 17 km² near Melnik, Kurlanovo and Rozhen. The town has also been famous for producing a strong wine since at least 1346. The local wine from the varietal Broad Leave Melnik Vine was reportedly a favourite of Winston Churchill's. Lately, the area of Melnik is enjoying a revival of vine growing and wine making. Several new, modern wineries have been built and operate (Villa Melnik Winery, Sintika Winery, Orbelus, etc., producing high quality wine from local and international varieties. Several others are under construction, preparing for the new 2014 harvest.
Interesting architectural landmarks include the Byzantine House, one of the oldest civilian buildings in the Balkans (built probably in the 12th or 13th century as a Bulgarian fortress), the Kordopulou's House (named after the merchant Manolis Kordopulou to whom it once belonged), which also has one of the largest wine cellars in Melnik, the Pashov House (1815), which houses the Historical Museum of Melnik and the Pasha's House, built by Ibrahim Bey, one of the richest beys in the region, during Ottoman rule. Some of the old churches in the town worth visiting are St Nicholas (built in the 13th century),

27. SOUNDBITE: (Bulgarian) Bisera Josifova, museum curator
Without getting too deep into politics or getting too emotional, we have to approach this period professionally. It''s not a standalone history and can''t be called totalitarian. I agree with my colleagues, including the Minister of Culture (Vezdy Rashidov) to accept the name of this museumThe Museum of Socialist Art.

29. SOUNDBITE: (Bulgarian) Bisera Josifova, museum curator
There are other such museums in Europe, but they are with completely different personalities. In Hungary such a museum is called the Museum of Terror. I keep saying, that especially for Bulgaria totalitarian is not corresponding to the nature, subject and the concept of our museum. Totalitarian art is the art of the Third Reich, art during Mussolini''s dictatorship. Totalitarian art is the art of North Korea.

LEADIN:
A new art museum opening in Sofia symbolizes Bulgaria''s long and painful farewell to its totalitarian past.
Hundreds of paintings and statues from the Communist era - which had been gathering dust in cellars - are now being restored for a place in their new home.
STORYLINE:
Giant statues of Soviet dictators Vladimir Lenin and local Bulgarian socialists Georgi Dimitrov and Todor Zhivkov.
These are some of the works being exhibited at a new museum to remind Bulgarians of their totalitarian past.
They were removed after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 - an event that triggered a political tsunami through Soviet satellites in Eastern Europe sweeping away landmark symbols of the communist regimes.
But while Budapest, Berlin and Prague opened similar expositions years ago, it took Bulgaria more than two decades to put together a collection of totalitarian art.
This giant red star being lifted into its new home outside the museum has deep symbolism.
This same star was removed from the roof of the Bulgarian communist party headquarters 21 years ago following collapse of the communist regime.
Since then the ornamental red star has gathered dust in the back of a public bath, where it was being stored.
Retrieved from cellars and warehouses, more than 100 artworks will be put on display in a museum, that''s due to open next month in Sofia''s Izgrev suburb.
Many of the statues need a lot of work to make them presentable.

Dobris, Czech Republic, 2008
Dobris is only 20 miles southwest of Prague. On April 18, 2008 we took a bus and walked through this small town with a stop in bakery and confectionary for a small desert. After refreshment we went to Dobris Castle and had a big lunch in the castle restaurant which we visit every time we come here. In the castle's French park we saw a Czech wedding. From the castle we returned to the Dobris square and waited for our bus home.

Germany: Rabbit eruptions - DB Railways Class 218 'Rabbit' starting up at Westerland & Stuttgart
Rabbit eruptions - Two clips showing DB Railways Class 218 'Rabbit' locomotives starting up at Westerland & Stuttgart stations.
Clip 1 - Westerland, 218 381 & 218 340 burst into life ready to power IC2311, the 0926 Westerland to Stuttgart Hbf. Recorded 4th July 2016.
Clip 2 (0:34) - Stuttgart, 218 495 & 218 326 are started up in preparation of working IC2013/RE2013, the 0601 Magdeburg to Oberstdorf. Recorded 2nd July 2016.
The DB Class 218 (before 1968 the DB Class V 164) are a class of 4 axle, diesel hydraulic locomotives acquired by the Deutsche Bundesbahn for use on main and secondary lines for both passenger and freight trains.
The class represents the final major revision of the DB V 160 family of locomotives; having the preferred features of the antecedent locomotives, including a hydrodynamic brake, and a single engine providing electrical train heating via a generator as well as tractive power. The class were also the most numerous of the family, providing the backbone of the Deutsche Bundesbahn's main-line diesel locomotive traction from the 1970s up to the reunification of Germany.
With a power of 2500 to 2800 hp and a top speed of 140 km/h, and the ability to work in multiple with related classes 215, 216, 217 and 218 as well as other classes, and coupled with electric heating and a low speed gear for heavier freight trains the locomotives became the main source of motive power in West Germany on both passenger and freight trains outside electrified sections.
The turn of the second millennium and the preceding few years saw a change from locomotive hauled trains to increasing use of 'diesel railcars' (or DMUs, diesel multiple units). This led to a reduction in the demand for these locomotives on passenger services, with many falling out of use, or only finding work pulling freight trains.

Deutsche Bahn AG (DB AG, DBAG or DB) is the German railway company, a private joint-stock company (AG) with the federal government being its majority shareholder with its headquarters in Berlin. It came into existence in 1994 as the successor to the former state railways of Germany, the Deutsche Bundesbahn of West Germany and the Deutsche Reichsbahn of East Germany. It also gained ownership of former railway assets in West Berlin held by the Verwaltung des ehemaligen Reichsbahnvermögens. Its name means German Railway in German.
Deutsche Bahn describes itself as the second-largest transport company in the world, after Deutsche Post AG, and is the largest railway operator and infrastructure owner in Europe. It carries about two billion passengers each year.
At its creation, DBAG took over the abbreviation and logo DB from the West German state railway Deutsche Bundesbahn, although it has since modernised the logo. Erik Spiekermann designed the new corporate font DB type.

Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof (German, Stuttgart main station) is a railway station in the city of Stuttgart, the state capital of Baden-Württemberg, in southwestern Germany. It is the largest regional and long-distance railway station in Stuttgart, the main node of the Stuttgart S-Bahn network, and, together with the station at Charlottenplatz, it is the main node of the Stuttgart Stadtbahn.
Plans for the controversial Stuttgart 21 project to convert the main line terminus station into an underground through station include the demolition of the side wings of the building, together with the elimination of the platforms, tracks, and apron of the terminus station. The planned underground through station is configured at a 90 degree angle to the present station. Construction is scheduled from 2010 to 2019.
In November 2009, preservationists of the International Council on Monuments and Sites nominated the building for inclusion in UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage list, an occasion that opponents of the Stuttgart 21 project picked to urge the city and Deutsche Bahn to stop the project which implies demolition of parts of the complex designed by Paul Bonatz.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Stuttgart is the capital and largest city of the German state of Baden-Württemberg. The city lies at the centre of a densely populated area, surrounded by a ring of smaller towns. This area called Stuttgart Region has a population of 2.7 million.
Stuttgart is a hub in the InterCityExpress and InterCity networks of Deutsche Bahn AG (DBAG), with through services to most other major German cities. It also operates international services to Strasbourg, Vienna, Zürich and Paris.
