Reykjanes Peninsula | Iceland: Road Trip Of A Lifetime | Shot On GoPro
In the concluding episode of our Iceland special, we discover the Reykjanes Peninsula. It is the closest region to the capital Reykjavik yet not properly explored by tourists.
Knowingly or unknowingly, every tourist visits Reykjanes Peninsula because Keflavik International airport & the famous Blue Lagoon are located on this peninsula. In this episode, we discover a bridge between continents, Krysuvik geothermal area, Lake Kleifarvatn & the popular Blue Lagoon.

My Iceland #12: Reykjanes
Part 12 of the My Iceland project
A weird couple of days around the bizarre and quiet Reykjanes peninsula. A world of volcanic hills and jagged lava fields; off flat windy headlands and shipwrecks. I first see the seething heat at Seltún before spending a folklore-filled night at the workaday but friendly fishing town of Grindavík. After that I head up the western flank past lighthouses and lonely farms before journeying back to the capital.

Keflavík is a charming fishing village on the Reykjanes Peninsula. It is home to the International airport and a great place to stay before or after a flight to Iceland. Don't miss out on its harbor or many museums. The Reykjanes peninsula it sits on also has a lot to offer including the Gunnuhver hot spring, Reykjanesviti lighthouse and the famous Blue Lagoon.

Rafn is an Icelandic Landscape and Nature Documentary Photographer living just a few kilometers outside the Capital of Reykjavík. Amazing Iceland - Reykjanes Peninsula - August 2018 (Part 1)
The peninsula is marked by active volcanism under its surface, and large lava fields, allowing little vegetation. There are numerous hot springs and sulphur springs in the southern half of the peninsula. Blue Lagoon is located here.

Blue Lagoon - Open air geotermal spa in Iceland Reykjanes Peninsula on the Grindavik lava fields
Flight by drone over Blue Lagoon 2016
The Blue Lagoon ( Icelandic Bláa lónið ) geothermal spa is one of the most visited attractions in Iceland. The spa is located in a lava field in Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula, southwestern Iceland.
Blue Lagoon is situated 20 km (12 mi) from the Keflavík International Airport and 39 km (24 mi) from the Reykjavík city, roughly a 21-minute drive from the airport and a 50-minute drive from Reykjavík.
The warm waters are rich in many minerals like silica and sulfur and bathing in the Blue Lagoon is reputed to help some people suffering from skin diseases such as psoriasis.
The water temperature in the bathing and swimming area of the lagoon averages 37–39 °C (99–102 °F).
The Blue Lagoon also operates a research and development facility to help find cures for other skin ailments using the mineral-rich water.

Iceland Geology #6 - Volcano Warning Near the Blue Lagoon and KEF Airport
Click on CC for full description and check the links below for detailed information but the Reykjanes peninsula is the youngest landmass of Iceland and the last eruption was in the 13th century so this is big news.
Update January 28. 18:00 GMT
Land continues to rise and there was a meeting in Grindavík yesterday to prepare the 3500 villagers to evacuate the area in case of an eruption.. 1500 people are at any given time by the Blue Lagoon and the Svartsengi Power Plant so they would also be evacuated to emergency centres in Keflavík and Kópavogur. There is still an earthquake swarm going on and the biggest one was measured 3.1 at 6km depth yesterday.
Keflavík Airport remains on warning code yellow
It's not possible to say if it's gonna be an eruption there but this might just be the start of process that could take months or years to reach the surface. Or today or tomorrow.
I'm making a more detailed video with areal photographs to explain this better from the Icelandic mentality toward earthquakes and volcanoes. It will be online in the next 24 hrs.
