Trip to England. How to Spend One Day in York.Video Umberto Faraglia
York is a walled city in northeast England that was founded by the ancient Romans. Its huge 13th-century Gothic cathedral, York Minster, has medieval stained glass and 2 functioning bell towers. The City Walls form a walkway on both sides of the River Ouse. The Monk Bar gate houses an exhibition tracing the life of 15th-century Plantagenet King Richard III.
York is a compact city packed full of exciting, unmissable experiences.
Walk the medieval cobbled streets and soak up the history of the city, once ruled by the Romans and the Vikings. A melting pot of culture waiting to be discovered, where Chocolatiers created the world’s finest chocolate and ghosts roam the snickelways. With over 30 attractions in less than one square mile you’re spoilt for choice with access to world class museums, galleries and experiences. Shop till you drop at one of the many unique independent York shops and high street fashion favourites. A foodie destination with something to suit all appetites, from fine dining to street food, and quaint cafes all in picturesque, historic surroundings.

Walmgate & Walmgate Bar
Walmgate
Walmgate is thought to mean the street belonging to someone called Walba. It is an eastern continuation of Fossgate, but lies entirely on the east side side of the River Foss. The main medieval features in Walmgate are St Deny's Church, St Margaret's church and Walmgate Bar. St Denys was first mentioned in the early 12th century but its spire was removed in 1798. The church has a Norman doorway, as does St Margaret's further to the east. St Margarets was first mentioned in 1180 and has brick western tower dating from 1684. It underwent much rebuilding in the 19th century.
Walmgate Bar
Walmgate Bar is the most complete of the four main medieval gateways to the city, it is the only bar to retain its barbican, portcullis and inner doors.
Its oldest part is a 12th century stone archway, the walled barbican at the front dates from the 14th century, the wooden gates from the 15th century and the timber-framed building on the inside from the 16th century.
It was burned by rebels in 1489 and battered by cannon during the siege of 1644.

BRISTOL
Bristol is a city, unitary authority area and ceremonial county in South West England, with an estimated population of 433,100 for the unitary authority in 2009, and a surrounding Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) with an estimated 1,070,000 residents in 2007. It is England's sixth and the United Kingdom's eighth most populous city, one of the group of English Core Cities and the most populous city in South West England.
Bristol received a Royal Charter in 1155 and was granted County status in 1373. From the 13th century, for half a millennium, it ranked amongst the top three English cities after London, alongside York and Norwich, on the basis of tax receipts, until the rapid rise of Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester during the Industrial Revolution in the latter part of the 18th century. It borders the counties of Somerset and Gloucestershire, and is also located near the historic cities of Bath to the south east and Gloucester to the north. The city is built around the River Avon, and it also has a short coastline on the Severn Estuary, which flows into the Bristol Channel.
Bristol is the largest centre of culture, employment and education in the region. Its prosperity has been linked with the sea since its earliest days. The commercial Port of Bristol was originally in the city centre before being moved to the Severn Estuary at Avonmouth; Royal Portbury Dock is on the western edge of the city boundary. In more recent years the economy has depended on the creative media, electronics and aerospace industries, and the city centre docks have been regenerated as a centre of heritage and culture. There are 34 other populated places on Earth named Bristol, most in the United States, but also in Peru, Canada, Jamaica, Barbados, and Costa Rica, all presumably commemorating the original. People from Bristol are termed Bristolians

A first-person perspective walk tour of Harpenden Town Centre in the county of Hertfordshire, UK - with the tour starting outside Harpenden Train Station, then down to the high street filled with shops, bars and restaurants, ending back at the station.
“Harpenden is a town in the St Albans City district in the county of Hertfordshire, England. The town's population is just over 30,000. Harpenden is a commuter town, with a direct rail connection through Central London and property prices well over double the national average. Geographically it is located between (and a short distance from) two much larger neighbours: Luton town (to the north) and the city of St Albans (to the south). It is flanked by the villages of Redbourn (to the west) and Wheathampstead (to the east).” - from Wikipedia

The Grey Dog Café, Mulberry Street, New York
One wintry and snowy day in December 2000 we snug into a cozy café we found by coincident at 33 Carmine Street, West Village New York. This café came to be one of our favorite cafés in the whole world. And every time we visited New York we went to this café. We even bough Grey Dog Mugs and the Grey Dog Coffee to enjoy back home.
Unfortunately the Grey Dog at 33 Carmine Street does not longer exist, but during our visit to New York July 2012 we visited the one at Mulberry Street, just North of Little Italy in East Village. It's like visiting an old friend. The lovely painting of the grey dog is there as well as many other interior details we recognize from the Carmine Café. And the coffee and the food is still just as good as we remember it!
We will definitely go back, and we're also looking forward to visiting the two other locations this café has in New York.
UK Roadtrip - June 2018
London to Oxford [stayed for one night]:
Accommodation: Ye Olde Swan Tipi Village, Camping. Cost: £5pp (regardless of pitches). Lovely pub owner, beautiful views up the River Thames.
What we did: Visited Oxford for one day which was enough time. Had a bbq at the campsite - owners didn’t mind.
Oxford to Bath [stayed for one night]:
Accommodation: Stayed at a friend’s.
What we did: Drove to Cheddar Gorge. Had Sally Lunn’s Buns. Wished we had more time there! Should have separated Bath and Cheddar into two separate days.
Bath to Bristol [stayed for one night]:
Accommodation: AirBNB in Bristol centre. Cost: £26.79pp. Very nice place, good location.
What we did: Not alot! Bristol was not particularly fun and didn’t have much to do indoors despite it raining cats and dogs. Wouldn’t visit again.
Bristol to Cardiff [stayed for 2 nights]:
Accommodation: Youth Hostel Association Cardiff Central. Cost: £15.50pp. A bit out of the way but has free parking.
What we did: Went out in Cardiff central. Very cheap drinks. Got hammered! Could easily do a long weekend here or an extra night.
Cardiff to Pembrokeshire [stayed for 2 nights]:
Accommodation: Shortlands Farm. Cost: £8pp. Absolutely stunning location. Right near a private beach that was almost empty all day. A bit of a hike but so worth it. Second night stayed at a friend’s.
What we did: Visited the beach. Visited Hilton Court Gardens - completely beautiful. Would stay in Pembrokeshire for 3 nights next time.
Pembrokeshire to Snowdonia [stayed for 2 nights]:
Accommodation: YHA Snowdon Llanberis. Cost: £13pp, one night. Nice place, perfect location for climbing Snowdon. The Heights Bunkhouse. Cost: £15pp, one night. Good location, but not a good place to stay. No bedding included and food very poor in the pub.
What we did: Climbed Snowdon - absolutely breathtaking. Tried some epic ice-cream. Went kayaking around Llyn Padarn Lake. Expensive but very beautiful.
Snowdonia - Liverpool [stayed for one night]:
Accommodation: Campanile Liverpool. Cost: £16pp. Nice place, a bit out of the way.
What we did: Went to Woody’s Karaoke Bar - very fun place and not expensive to drink there. Lovely staff. Would have loved to spend an extra night in Liverpool. On a previous trip, we went to Knowsley Safari park which was surprisingly such a good day out for the price.
Liverpool to Lake District [stayed for 2 nights]:
Accommodation: Pound Farm Park. Cost: £13.33pp. Lovely place, great hosts.
What we did: The World of Beatrix Potter attraction. It was phenomenal! We had afternoon tea here! Had BBQs outside our pod at the accommodation.
Lake District to Newcastle [didn’t end up staying]
When we arrived in newcastle, there were so much roadworks and diversions that we couldn’t find a single place to park. Traffic lasted for hours so we continued our journey to Whitby instead.
Newcastle to Whitby [stayed for 2 nights]:
Accommodation: YHA Whitby. Cost: £23.65pp. The best accommodation we’ve stayed in with regards to location. Attached to the old abbey. The hostel is in a huge old fashioned house.
What we did: Visited the town, did a boat ride on a pirate ship, did the silly Dracula attraction, had chips in gravy, went to a rooftop bar, visited the abbey. Would stay for longer on a stand alone holiday.
Whitby to York [stayed for one night]:
Accommodation: YHA York. Cost: £15pp. Nice place, a bit far out from the centre.
What we did: Jorvik Viking Centre; really good, informative and fun. York Dungeons - better than London Dungeons!
York to Leeds [stayed for two nights]:
Accommodation: AirBNB just out of the centre. Cost: £19.50pp. Out of the centre, fantastic host.
What we did: Went to open mic, went to various pubs. Not much to do here. Would have skipped it and spent an extra day in York instead.
