Seattle Travel Tips: 8 Things to Know Before You Go
Everything YOU need to know before you travel to Seattle Washington. With a population of 750,000, Seattle is located in the Pacific Northwest. Surrounded by water, evergreen forests, and mountains. The official nickname for Seattle is Emerald City, for all the trees. Also known as the Gateway to Alaska because it’s the closest big US city to Alaska. A major departure point for Alaska cruises. Seattle is home to major US companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Costco, and Formerly Boeing. Seattle is the birthplace of many iconic music acts like Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam. Seattleites have a rep for being cold and standoffish. It's known as the Seattle Freeze.
2 - Weather
150 days of rain a year, with an average rainfall of 37 inches. It's generally not a huge downpour, but more of a steady drizzle. Make sure to bring a raincoat and umbrella.. Although you generally wont see the locals using an umbrella, just a raincoat. And if it's not raining, it's usually cloudy. Don't expect blue skies and sun here. Cloudy 201 days out of the year and partly cloudy 93 days. Winter is quite cold. Averages about 5 inches of snow per year.. If its snowing, don’t plan on going much of anywhere. The city mostly shuts down.
3 - Getting in
Flying in you’ll likely land at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SeaTac for short)
Home to Alaska Airlines
Take the light rail in to downtown. Takes approximately 40 minutes from the airport to downtown.
Amtrak trains
Coast Starlight from LA via Portland
Cascades runs from Vancouver, through Seattle, to Eugene Oregon
Empire Builder comes in all the way from Chicago
Driving in, it’s about 3 hours from Portland or Vancouver
4 - Getting around
Lots of water around. Which makes getting around slow.
Seattle traffic is awful.. I personally still get a rental car.
Don't want to rent one for the whole trip? Use Car2Go.
Seattle has one light rail line. Trains arrive every 6 to 15 minutes.
2 street car lines. Fares are $2.50 for adults.
1 Monorail line, from Westlake Center to Seattle Center. It’s a 2 minute ride for $2.50
Lots of bus lines too.
Oh and I mentioned water.. There’s also water taxis, and ferries.
Uber and Lyft are plentiful
Walking is the best way to get around.. but it's quite hilly. Maybe even more so than San Francisco. So bring your hill climbing shoes.
5 - Food
Just like NYC, Seattle has lots of very good restaurants, but they are expensive. Known for seafood. Locally caught Salmon and Crab. Shellfish, oysters.
Eat a Geoduck (gooey-duck) Clam, native to Washington. Popular in Asian cuisine.. 50% of all geoducks get exported to China. somewhere between chewy clam and a tender abalone, though crisper in texture than either”
Seattle hot dog.. with grilled onions Cream Cheese
Fast food of choice is Teriyaki
Adding to Seattle’s well-known hipster status it has a wide variety of micro-breweries. Over 200 breweries
6 - Coffee
Seattlite love coffee, and coffee shops. The coffee shop is like an extension of most people's homes, they study, they meet people, oh, and they drink some coffee.
Starbucks started in Seattle. There are more Starbucks per person in Seattle than in any other city. In Pike Place they call it the original.. But the original one is no more. If you are a fan of Starbucks visit their flagship Starbucks Reserve Seattle Roastery on Capitol Hill.
Bikini Baristas started in Seattle too.
7 - Hotels
I think the best place to stay is in the heart of downtown. Then you won’t have to fight traffic, or deal with the lousy public transit because you can walk to most things. Expensive during the weekend. Try visiting on the weekend when all the business folks are gone.
Want something a little quieter? Try the Queen Anne Neighborhood by the space needle. Still close, and probably a bit cheaper. Just not in the middle of it all.
Bainbridge Island for cheaper hotels
It's a 35 minute ferry ride in to Seattle for a cheap $8 round trip.
Or even around Seatac Airport
8 - Big attractions
Pike Place Market, Seattle Space Needle, the Waterfront.

Pike Place Market - AMERICA'S #1 CHOWDER + Must-Eat Market Tour in Seattle | American Food!
►SUBSCRIBE for 2 new videos per week:
►T-shirts and caps available now:
Pike Place Market is a landmark of #Seattle, and one of the oldest continuously functioning markets in the United States. I had been there once before when I was a kid, but this time I was on a mission to go on the ultimate Pike Place Market food tour!
In this video you’ll find some of the best food within the market and all the details about what to order and eat when you’re in Seattle, Washington. One tip - go early to start eating before the main huge rush comes - when it gets to mid-day, the market is packed.
Here are all the restaurants we tried at #PikePlaceMarket:
Lowell's Restaurant - For breakfast we went to the legendary Lowell's Restaurant, serving a mix of classic American food including seafood. I wanted to try their dungeness crab eggs benedict, which was a little expensive, but pretty good.
Dungeness crab eggs benedict - $25
Pure Food Fish Market - Next to Lowell’s don’t miss the smoked salmon. Again, it’s not cheap, but it’s so good, salmon glistening and embedded with smoke.
½ Pound salmon - $16.56
Ghost Alley Espresso - Next on this Pike Place Market food tour I was in desperate need of a coffee to begin the morning so we navigated our way past the gnarly gum alley to Ghost Alley Espresso. Great place for a quick cup of espresso.
Doppio espresso - $3
Piroshky Piroshky - A legendary bakery that serves mostly Russian influenced baked goods, both sweet and savory, is Piroshky Piroshky. Again, I tried to keep it pretty classic, and Seattle style, so Jason and I split the salmon pate piroshky. It was very tasty, with a cream cheesy taste.
Salmon - $6.85
Pike Place Chowder - Having won every chowder competition and award in the US as possible, Pike Place Chowder serves America’s #1 Chowder. So you know you can’t miss it when you go to Pike Place Market. We got in line about 20 minutes before they opened and line didn’t take long. You order, get your chowder, and then sit down. I don’t have too much experience with chowder, but indeed it was good, and I also really liked the seafood bisque.
Total price - $37.76 total
Beecher's Handmade Cheese - Another classic is Beecher's Handmade Cheese where you can sample cheese curds and also order grilled cheese sandwiches.
Flagship sandwich - $7.49
Ellenos Real Greek Yogurt - They also have a very loyal following and for sure it’s some of the best yogurt I’ve ever tried.
Market Grill - Finally to end this Seattle food tour we stopped at Market Grill, right in the heart of the market and I ordered the grilled salmon plate. Overall, it was good, and a perfect ending to this extreme food tour!
Grilled salmon plate - $15
Thank you for watching!

Seattle to Bainbridge Island Day Trip!
Who knew a short 35-minute ferry ride could take us to a town with so much to offer? Let’s talk everything Bainbridge.
The whole Maple + Main team ventured across the Puget Sound together. The Seattle ferry isn’t simply a mode of transportation itself, it’s a scenic experience of the surrounding areas and makes for a fun trip.
After arriving in Bainbridge, the team headed to the 5-star rated Good Egg restaurant. Good Egg utilizes fresh produce from the surrounding area. Besides being a great restaurant, Good Egg also puts on fun events. Check out their events page here:
With full bellies, the team was ready to have an exciting day of shop-hopping. Salt House was first on the list where Bethanie found a particularly special item called ‘Roman Salt’. Her son’s name is Roman whom recently finished culinary art school, so of course, she had to get it for him.
90% of Salt House’s product are made in the USA with most being in the PNW. We love that! From small-batched foods to laundry detergent, there’s a product for you.
B.I. Barkery was a highlight for Brea as she found plenty of options for her beloved dog, Bear. This is the perfect spot for dog lovers with specialty items and organic treats.
Bon Bon Collections, specializing in ‘Bainbridge Island Fudge’, is a must visit where you’ll most likely be like Alise and go home with 5 lbs of fudge (she claims it was all for gifting ... yeah, right!). The fudge is made in-house daily and makes your visit that much sweeter! Plan the flavors you’ll want to try here:
Churchmouse Yarns & Teas had a plethora of products that really pulled in each one of our team members. From clothes to dishware to their lavender products — grown in the San Juan Islands — one can easily spend hours just within this one shop. Stay up to date by signing up for their newsletter here:
Seaside Station was our team’s last stop but it’s perfect to be your first stop being right by the ferry terminal. Located in an old gas station even the aesthetic is worth seeing. As a commuter market selling everything from flowers to hoodies, there’s something for everyone here. We loved the Bainbridge Island logo hoodies!
Our time quickly came to a close and we realized how much we didn’t get to see and do. Bainbridge part 2 is a must! Let us know your favorite things to do on Bainbridge and we’ll try them out our next trip.
Happy day tripping!

THE TRAVEL DIARIES - A SOCIAL PANTS EXPERIMENT
Welcome to The Social Pants Experiment. This season, The Travel Diaries.
Last year, I spent my time on daily Vlogs. What did I learn? My Travel Videos were well received. So, this year (2019) I'm focusing on fewer videos with greater depth of content.
And, specifically, focused on my extensive travels around the globe.
The term Travel Vlogger gets thrown around a lot these days. It's a standard on YouTube. Consistently trending on Instagram, and can be confusing for those seeking a taste of reality. Let's change that right now!
I write for fun. I travel out of necessity. And, this year- these are my travel diaries. I hope you enjoy.
TOP 10 DON’TS WHEN CROSSING THE US AND CANADA BORDER
416-962-2623 / 1-866-760-2623
immigroup.com
TOP 10 DON’TS WHEN CROSSING THE US AND CANADA BORDER
1. SHUT UP! PART 1.DON’T TRY TO BE FUNNY.
Border guards are not your friends, and it’s highly unlikely that they moonlight as talent scouts for comedy clubs. This is the wrong moment to make a buddy or tell jokes. Stay respectful and succinct and save the complaints for the drive away from the checkpoint.
2. SHUT UP! PART 2. DON’T DISCLOSE MORE THAN YOU’RE ASKED.
Answer all of the guard’s questions, but avoid getting chatty about your plans if you don’t have to. Thinking of catching up on some work on your laptop a little during your vacation, for example? Don’t mention that. There is no such thing as an American working holiday visa, although there are plenty of options for working holidays in Canada, or for Canadians travelling to other parts of the world. If you’re going to the U.S, however, best to say that your laptop is just for fantasy sports and YouTube. Planning a trip to propose to your girlfriend? Congratulations. But...
3. EVEN YOUR SEX LIFE MATTERS.DON’T MENTION THAT YOU’RE PLANNING TO MARRY A CITIZEN OR RESIDENT OF ANOTHER COUNTRY WHEN YOU’RE ENTERING IT.
Even if you’re in the middle of the appropriate application process, talking about your romantic attachments will not warm the hearts of the border guards and it will get you flagged as a potential risk for illegal immigration. This goes for crossing the US and Canadian border in either direction. Say that you’re visiting “a friend” and save the flaunting of your ring for the day when you’re married or your citizenship and residency information is fully settled.
4. DEVELOP A “CREATIVE VOCABULARY.”DON’T BE IN A RUSH TO EXPLAIN EVERY DETAIL ABOUT THE GOODS YOU’RE BRINGING WITH YOU, BUT KNOW THE RISKS OF INCOMPLETE DISCLOSURE
It can be mighty tempting to try to bring a few extra items back from your trip without declaring them. You can push the limits of the personal exemption (see above for the exact amounts), or you can declare the extras and pay the duties. If you’re pushing it, try to describe dollar values using words like “approximately,” “about,” or “around” if you’re just above the personal exemption limits. Remove the tags, and ditch the shopping bags and receipts. If you are searched and the agents find something that you haven’t declared, it’s most likely that you’ll be delayed and that you’ll have to pay the duty. Hey, people forget the things they buy all the time, right? Mistakes can happen. If you push it too far, however, and you get caught making a false declaration crossing to Canada, you might also have your goods seized or you might have to pay a penalty that’s an extra 25-80% of the goods’ value. The worst case scenario is that you’ll lose the goods permanently and have your vehicle impounded. You’ll also almost certainly find yourself subject to more intense scrutiny at future crossings. Getting caught with small amounts over the limit shouldn’t have lasting repercussions, unless you’re busted repeatedly. Now you know the risks. Govern yourself accordingly. Bonus tip: Never try to conceal anything you just bought at the duty-free shop. They take your name and license plate number and their database is coordinated with the border guards on each side, so lying in this case makes for a guaranteed delay. Don’t do it.
5. A CRIMINAL MIND, IT’S ALL I’VE EVER KNOWN.DON’T LIE ABOUT YOUR CRIMINAL PAST.
If you have run into legal trouble, check to see if it’s serious enough to prevent you from travelling. Each country has its own regulations on this, and most countries reserve the right to deny anyone the right to entry for any reason. If you are denied entry crossing from Canada to US, consider applying for a US Entry Waiver. If you are worried you can’t enter Canada from the US, consider getting a temporary resident permit. The process rules and process for both the US Entry Waiver and the TRP can be complicated and difficult, so you can always seek help.

US 99 Seattle to Portland 1944 Revisited via Dashcam 040514
Before we had the Interstate Highway System, the US Highways were the 'Inter-state' highways from the 1920's until the Interstates first appeared in the late 1950's and though these highways still exist, many US highways slowly were phased out, as redundant to the newer limited access highways they were often adjacent to. So on April 5, 2014, I made this road trip this road trip from Seattle to Portland as if you were to drive the route of US 99 (and Oregon US 99 West into Portland) from 70 years ago - and captured over 1 1/2 hours of scenes with my HP f200 dash cam. At that time, US 99 (and until the mid 1960's) was the main north - south route connecting major cities along the Pacific Coast States, from the Canadian border at Blaine, WA to Mexicali, CA on the Mexican border - and basically was replaced by Interstate 5, except from Los Angeles to San Diego, which was US 101 then. 1944 was when you still drove through any good size cities ranging in size from Kelso to Seattle - and through their downtown areas (with Tacoma being the exception here). US 99 was at that time a mostly 2 lane highway between Tumwater and Woodland - and with WW II going on then, the 4-lane highway replacements were put on hold - and you just didn't hop in the car and go - gas rationing was enforced. But after the war, the cities along the way were one by one being bypassed by more modern (for the times) highways, by the mid 1950's all the 2 lane sections of US 99 between Seattle and Portland were moved to the newer 4-lane highways. Around that same time, the Interstate Highways were started and by the late 1960's, most of I-5 was completed - and when the newer bypass around the late 1940's 'super highway' at Kelso was done in the early 1980's, the route you take today from Seattle to Portland hasn't changed, but there have been constant upgrades (as funding is allowed). In 1944, the Seattle to Portland US 99 was around 193 miles, while today's I-5 is about 175 miles. But US 99 of 1944 bears little resemblence to I-5 of today, although they share less about 36 miles of the same right of way, only a few bridges remain (noted in this video) on I-5 that existed in 1944. I have on the screen, as being viewed, the current street, road or highway name of that particular part of US 99 of 1944 on that particular scene. You can see how much of the urban and suburban areas along the 'Old 99' have developed into major 'strips' with all sorts of businesses, while much of the old 2 lane highway has stayed, for the most part, very rural or 'small town USA'.
*Please forgive me if did not spell correctly or have my facts 100% in order. Editing this took a while and a particular font gave me some trouble (example - the 'R' is missing from Vancouver). Due to the lack of proper software, I had to convert formats and the quality suffered as well, so this video appears a bit rough and inserted titles and comments can be hard to read.*
The vehicle that the dash cam views over the hood of is my 2004 Ford Ranger. It would have been cool to have a restored version of the '41 Ford Pickup that my dad had when I was a youngster, for a more realistic drivers view from thoses times.
My source here for information was my personal knowledge, listening to folks from that generation of 1944, consulting old maps, but also a big thanks to Bill Watson of the Cowlitz County Historical Museum for his help in connecting the biggest piece of this US 99 route puzzle!
*Also, on a personal notation: The scene from Old Highway 99 SW in Thurston County just before the crossing of I-5, before Grand Mound, my grandparents lived on the road just to the right as that scene ends. They moved there during WW II and were there into the mid 1970's. When the state built the 'new' US 99 (now I-5) in the early 1950's, they puchased the right of way (via 'eminent domain') through the then 20 acres my grandparents had at that time, plus Grandad got a job building that part of the freeway as well!
*Since I posted this video, I had a chat with my mom, who is 82 years old, pretty sharp and grew up at my grandparents place I mentioned in the previous paragraph from 1942 to 1952 - knew the Centralia - Chehalis area quite well. She, according to her thoughts, made a couple of corrections: 1- When you drove south on US 99 in Centralia, instead of turning right from Main onto Pearl St., you turned right on then a 2-way Tower Ave., then left at Chestnut St. 2 - She said that when you drove into Chehalis on National Ave, you made a left onto Market instead of the way I drove onto Front Ave., Pacific Ave., Park Ave. and then Market. I had read that the way I drove was southbound US 99 then, so I'll just have to accept who I drove this may have been it ( or a small detour).
So please enjoy this, sort of, virtual tour. This is my first epic YouTube video. I did not add any sound - that's up to the viewer.
Thanks for stopping by!

A HOMELESS WOMAN Shows Us Why It Feels Good to Give (+ Seattle's tent cities/tiny homes)
UPDATE VIDEO: Hanes Takes Formerly Homeless Woman Shopping for Her New Apartment.
Unlike the majority of fake homeless experiment and social experiment videos popular on YouTube, this video featuring a homeless woman in Seattle is as real as real can be.
I have been trying to vlog more and I did my very best to capture the experience of meeting Manda for the first time, touring Seattle's sanctioned homeless tent encampments, and handing out Hanes socks with Manda to homeless people downtown Seattle. Because capturing vlog content is often challenging some of the footage is not the greatest but I selected clips on emotion over quality. I feel it's important to bring you through the experience as authentically as possible. This video is far from perfect but it is real!
A few months back Manda posted a selfie on one of my Facebook pages of her drinking coffee from her homeless camp. We became friends online yet I never imagined that I one day I would be at Manda's camp drinking coffee with her.
This video starts off with the moment I met Manda in real life for the first time. Manda then takes us on a short tour of her homeless camp. I have huge respect for Manda. It takes a lot of courage to open up your life for the world to see when you live under a bridge homeless.
We then meet up with a friend that works for the City of Seattle who takes us on a tour of Tent City 5 Interbay that is run by homeless people Licton Springs Village, a low barrier tent community that is a harm reduction model.
The next day folks from Hanes flew out to Seattle to meet Manda and to give socks away to several of Seattle's homeless camps, the Downtown Emergency Service Center (DESC), and homeless people unsheltered downtown.
If you want to connect to homeless people you need to listen to homeless people. Manda took control. She was a force of nature handing out socks and hard to keep up with. The passion Manda had to help other people was contagious.
This video is an inside look into Seattle's homeless population and how homeless people survive. Throughout this video, Manda shows us why it feels good to give to others. Let's follow her lead and do all we can to help the hurting people in our communities. Manda is living proof we can all make a real positive difference in our world!

The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they're on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as YouTube, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can't ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation's most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath – its founder – and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America's homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

Our spring break trip to the PNW was a blast! We flew into Portland, Oregon for a few days of exploring the mountains and the beach. We were able to hike Dog Mountain and travel to Cannon Beach for a picnic. While our time was limited, we had a ton of fun and already want to go back!
