Acadia National Park in 4K - Town of Bar Harbor, Maine!
Bar Harbor, Maine, originally incorporated as Eden on February 23, 1796, has a world renowned ambiance that blends seashore community, Down East character, and the famous Maine Lobster. Part of Hancock County, it is the best known town on Mount Desert Island with an approximate population of 5,235 (per year 2010 census) and 28,800 scenic acres. Included within the municipality are the villages of Hulls Cove, Salisbury Cove, and Town Hill, as is a large portion of Acadia National Park. Because of this, people often refer to it all as being part of the same concept and place, as well as the same state of mind.
Bar Harbor sits in a particular coastal part of the State referred to as “Down East” Maine. This term has a long history dating back over two hundred years when large schooners, filled with goods on their way back to England or elsewhere in Europe, had to sail down wind to the east from the larger population centers like Boston, Philadelphia, and New York - hence, Down East. While visiting, you will often hear the tell-tail sound of a “Mainer” speaking with that special Down East accent where the “r” sound is being dropped. Bar Harbor is pronounced like “Bah-Hah-Bah” and lobster sounds like “lob-stuh!” (You may want to begin practicing now.)

GoPro Bar Harbor Maine 2014
Our trip to Bar Harbor Maine. We went whale watching but unfortunately didn't get to see any. We also road on Olly's Trolly which was really interesting because you learn so much about the history of the harbor. The horse carriage ride was super relaxing after hiking to the top of Cadillac Mountain the day before (we were very sore haha) The Schooner boat ride was a great way to end the trip. Bar Harbor is a beautiful city and we would love to visit again....and hopefully see whales this time :)

Anthem of the Seas cruise visiting bar Harbor September 25 2016
Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island in Maine is a tender port - we sailed from Anthem of the Seas into the harbor in small local tender boats. A tour to Acadia Nature Park, covering the majority of the island. We drove from Bar Harbor to the south along the rugged rocky coast and through dense forests to the top of Cadillac Mountain, with a nice view over the island.
Back in Bar Harbor we got a cappuccino at a cafe. Walked through the town and along a path along the water.
In Bar Harbor is a great difference between the tide and at 1 pm was the Island Bar Island mainland with Mount Desert. We walked on a sandbank to the island

Southwest Harbor, Maine, circa 1920s
This film was shot by Dr. Ernest G. Stillman (1884-1949), who was a summer resident of Northeast Harbor, Maine. He shot many 16mm films that documented life and industry around Mt. Desert Island and the Cranberry Isles, from the 1920s through 1940s. The films include the Fire of 1947, as well as footage of logging, fishing, boatyards and sea activities. While they are not professional documentaries, he specially edited many of his films and spliced in custom title cards.
Many more historic films of Maine and New England are being conserved at Northeast Historic Film's archives in Bucksport, Maine. Visit oldfilm.org for more information.

ACADIA NATIONAL PARK SCHOONER PARADE
(MT. DESERT ISLAND, MAINE) Crowds gathered on the banks of Somes Sound in the heart of Acadia National Park for a maritime show of multi-masted sailing vessels in honor of Acadia's 100th anniversary. The Maine Windjammer Association organized the August 2, 2016 parade of North America's oldest fleet of commercial schooners, all escorted into the mouth of Somes Sound by dozens of yachts, sail boats and other vesselsOn a cool, breezy sunny afternoon, full-sail schooners gracefully glided through the water, making several passes around the sound to applause from hundreds of enthusiastic spectators who gathered hours earlier to park along the waterfront off Sargent Drive.

This film was made for our incoming freshman and their parents. I gives a realistic view of what a typical day at Mount Desert Island High School is like. It was shot 100% on campus while school and classes were taking place.
