Places to see in ( Metz - France ) Saint Maximin
The church Saint - Maximin is a catholic church located near the Lutheran Temple in the district of the Old Town in Metz in Moselle . It is placed under the name of Bishop Maximin of Trier , who died in 347. The Romanesque church is located in the district Outre - Seille , 68 rue Mazelle.
The construction of this church Romanesque dated xii th century xv th century. The choir, the transept and square tower of the xii th century are an important testimony of the Romanesque period. The nave dates from the xv th century. In the southern transept, the chapel of Louve and Gournay dates from 1365, a gift of Poinsignon Dieu Amy. The young Jacques-Benigne Bossuet pronounced on October 24, 1658, one of the first funeral orations, that of Henry de Gournay. A baroque portal replaces in 1753 the first ogival door
The church houses the only known stained glass windows designed by Jean Cocteau; the stained glass windows were put in place at the end of the 1960s according to cartons from 1962. The stained glass work by Jean Cocteau in Metz is undoubtedly his last great masterpiece substantially completed posthumously since died October 11, 1963. It Edouard Dermit , his adopted son who will ensure the full implementation of the project designed by Jean Cocteau.
The most convincing message signified by central stained glass seems to be that of immortality. Obviously, if Cocteau has made the two characters appear so clearly in this axial stained glass (the praying and his double), we can not ignore and ignore the content of their invocation to know the faith in immortality. Moreover, it is this same immortality that any artist seeks through his work whose goal would be to create a work that succeeds him. Jean Cocteau himself, making this last creation the most important before his death, had to think about it all the time. He did not stop his life during his use of mythology and in particular the character of Orphée to bring back to life the dear ones and make them even immortal. Regarding the Orphée filmfrom 1950, it is said in particular in the blog The Eye on the Screen : Jean Cocteau transposes the myth of Orpheus to the present time ... The man is saved, Death dies, it is the myth of immortality. ' .

Gorgeous Cathedral in Metz, France ????????
#france #travel #metz
Metz is a city in France’s northeastern Grand Est region, with gardens and leafy promenades along the Moselle and Seille rivers. In the old town, the Gothic Metz Cathedral is famed for its massive amount of stained glass windows, many by noted artists. Nearby, the Musée de la Cour d'Or displays artifacts from Roman to Renaissance times. The Centre Pompidou-Metz, with its undulating roof, exhibits contemporary art
We made a day trip to Metz because we read that the Cathedral has the most stained glass of any church in Europe. The weather was normal for November. We also visited Porte des Allemands and had some lunch before heading home.

Places to see in ( Metz - France ) Sainte Segolene
The Sainte - Ségolène church is a catholic building located on Jeanne - d'Arc square on Sainte - Croix hill, in the district of the Ancienne Ville in Metz . The building is the subject of a partial classification and an inscription under the historical monuments since the September 29 , 1981. It has been fully classified since April 4, 2013.
Several buildings succeeded one another on the site of the current church. A first chapel is built between 800 and 830 in the district of Aiest inhabited by many winegrowers. A mention of the church appears again in 912, in a cartulary of the abbey of Gorze . The cult of Saint Segolene , an Albigensian who lived in the vii th century, arrives early in Lorraine. Of the primitive construction, there remains only a crypt, under the choir of the current church. In the xiii th Century, the district is urbanizing and the Carolingian building is too small. So we decide to build a more spacious church.
The new, larger church was built in 1250, in the Gothic style , at the same time as the cathedral Saint Etienne. From this building, there remains the choir, the two apsidioles, and the first three bays of the nave (Cl MH). The Sainte-Ségolène church is built in Jaumont stone . The church was enlarged between 1470 and 1500 by the addition of a flamboyant Gothic porch . In the 1850 work, were discovered frescoes XIII remains th to XVI th centuries, who disappeared in 1898. Important works were undertaken between 1896 and 1898, under the direction of the architect Conrad Wahn. They totally changed the appearance of the church: only the choir and the first three bays were kept as they were. The nave was extended, the court removed the porch and bell tower of the xv th century were destroyed and replaced by a harmonic facade, with three gates and two towers twin spiers. The elegant neo-gothic facade is inspired by the church of St. Elizabeth Marburg . The statuary of the portals is the work of the French sculptor Dujardin, already known for his sculptures on the cathedral Saint-Etienne of Metz . The central portal, with a bronze door, is the work ofEugène Vallin of Nancy (1903).
The church has many windows, including a valuable crucifixion and some zoomorphic medallions dating from the xii th century. The crucifixion scene of the apse dedicated to the Virgin (Chapel of the Virgin), to the north, is the oldest stained glass window in Lorraine. Rhenish style, it represents Christ on the cross, surrounded by the Virgin and Saint John the Baptist. The cross, adorned with foliage, is framed by the archaic symbols of the moon and the sun. Other pieces date from the xiii th century, donors stained glass Metz and his wife Jean Battle of the xv th century (1459 c.) - are other windows of the xvi th century and in the choir of the windows of the glass messinLaurent-Charles Maréchal , posed between 1848 and 1855.
