43BMystery of Mounds in Saito city, Japan 西都市古墳群の謎Japan
(43)This is a short story of Saito-city Tomb Mounds in Japan. The Tomb Mounds are closely connected with other ancient civilizations, as well as Nintoku Tomb Mound, Osaka, Japan. Here is the evidence,
(43)宮崎県の西都市にある古墳群は、仁徳陵のみならず、世界の古代文明と密接につながっていました。ここにその証拠を提示します。

Another one in Omuro Park (大室公園) in Maebashi City, Gunma (群馬前橋市). It's the biggest in the park at 111m. Replica haniwa are in place around the kofun, which is always an interesting thing to see.

Q: What am I watching here ?
A: You are watching footage of a kofun/古墳 - kofun are tombs in Japan that were created during the Kofun Period (roughly between the 3rd and 7th Century AD) - this era was preceded by the Jomon and Yayoi periods, and followed by Asuka, Nara and so on. These tombs were built as burial chambers for people from Japanese imperial families and other people of higher status in society during those days. The most well-known and generally largest tombs are found around Kyoto and Osaka, but they are found all over Kansai, Kanto, Tohoku etc., and even in other parts of Japan such as Shikoku and Kyushu. Figures vary greatly, but some sources state there are over 160000 thousand of these kofun in Japan. At times you will see haniwa on and around kofun - haniwa are terracotta figures which were made in various shapes, including being formed as people and animals.
Have a read of the the Wikipedia article for more information :
I also have a Facebook page where I post these videos. Feel free to contact me via that page if you want to connect regarding anything about kofun, particularly their promotion to tourists to Japan. Ideally I'd like to build a kofun appreciation community of sorts, but that is just a dream right now -

Saitobaru Burial Mounds, Miyazaki Japan 西都原古墳群
Description: Oni-no-Iwaya, Saitobaru, Miyazaki, Japan
The Saitobaru Burial Mounds are located 25km NW of Miyazaki city in Kyushu and encompass over 300 burial tombs of various sizes. Scattered across a 70-meter-high hill, these above-ground tombs of ancient warriors and clan leaders were designated a National Historical Site in 1952.
Oni no Iwaya kofun:
One tumulus in particular – a large, two-tiered circular mound – was about 7 m high and I discovered later that it is the only one of its kind in Japan.
Oni-no-Iwaya is believed to have been the tomb of the last local chief, or shucho, of Saito which puts its date of construction somewhere in the 7th century.
It was excavated in the 90s and so it`s now possible to see inside the lateral-entry stone chamber, the only one at the Saitobaru Burial Mounds. It is divided into a genshitsu, where the dead were laid, and a sendo, a passageway leading to the genshitsu.

Saito city is located in the center of Miyazaki prefecture. The city preserves many historical ruins relating to ancient Japanese culture. Saitobaru Brial Mounds has about 300 ancient tombs in a spacious land measuring 2.6km east-west and 4.2km north-south. You can enjoy the historical scenery in the great nature. About 2000 cherry blossom trees and 8ha of a canola flower garden fully bloom in the spring. The canola garden transforms into a cosmos garden in the autumn. Saitobaru Brial Mounds got designated as a National Heritage Site in 2018 and has been a popular tourist attraction since then.

[Japan] Miyazaki - unago, nabe, Saitobaru garden & countryside
First, we went to see Saitobaru, ancient burial mounds with Ikumi's aunt and started by having some unagi (eel) which was delicious! :) Then we had some nabe at Ikumi's friend's place, Aoi chan, and with Erika chan.
The day after we visited Heiwadai park, which is full of replicas of ancient statues that used to cover burial mounds, had udon before going to the countryside at Ikumi's grandparents... :) For dinner we went to a barbecue restaurant and it was amazing, I ate so much. :3
For my last night at their house, Ikumi's family made tempura and it was sooo good. :)
