Western Wall, Western Tunnels Overview Tour: Kotel, Jerusalem, Holiest Site in Judaism, Wailing Wall
See a complete overview of the Western Wall, Western Wall Tunnels, Kotel (Hebrew name), Western Wall Tour, Temple Mount Platform, Southern Stairs, Wailing Wall, and more in Jerusalem. A very biblical, in-depth look at the holiest site in Judaism.
Location
1. The Western Wall, also known as the Wailing Wall (because the Jews weep here during their prayers) is located on the western side of the Temple Mount.
2. The Western Wall Tunnel is accessed on the northern side of the Western Wall Plaza and runs north to the end of the Temple Mount Platform.
Historical Background
1. When the Romans destroyed the temple in 70 AD, part of the western side of the Temple Mount Platform survived. For hundreds of years prior to 1967, people prayed in the small area of the wall that could be seen at that time. However, in 1967, following the Six-Day War, Israelis excavated below the ground level of the wall and found two more stone rows. They then cleared the area around the wall to create the Western Wall Plaza that visitors see today.
2. The Western Wall is part of the retaining wall, or support wall, that Herod the Great built in 19 BC when he enlarged the Temple Mount complex in order to accommodate a larger temple and Temple Mount area. It was a massive undertaking that required exceptional and sophisticated engineering.
3. Unlike many think, the Western Wall was not part of the wall of the temple King Herod Built.
Places of Interest
1. In the Western Wall Plaza area, a walkway bridge can be seen that tourist use to access the Temple Mount.
2. The Western Wall Plaza is divided into two sections: a men’s and a women’s section.
3. The area close to the wall is considered a synagogue, so men must wear a head covering when entering the men’s section.
4. Most Jews do not enter on the Temple Mount for fear of unknowingly walking in the place where the Holy of Holies might have been. Plus, Muslims do not want them entering there as well.
5. The Western Wall Plaza is the closest large public area to the temple and Holy of Holies for the Jews. Therefore, it is their most holy site.
6. On the northern side of the Western Wall is Wilson’s Arch, which is the modern name for a stone arch whose top is still visible today. It once supported a bridge that provided access to a gate that was level with the surface of the Temple Mount during the time of Jesus. Under this arch is a synagogue where Jews pray and read the Scriptures.
7. The Western Wall Plaza is only 10% of the entire western wall of the Temple Mount Platform. The majority of the wall is accessed by entering what is called “The Western Wall Tunnels.” We will see that part shortly.
8. The entire length of the Western Wall is 1,575 ft. long (480 m.), almost a third of a mile (.53 km.).
9. South of the Western Wall are stones that the Romans cast down when they destroyed the city in 70 AD. under the leadership of the Roman General, Titus.
10. The broken pavement of the street that the massive stones crushed when they fell is sobering to see.
11. Burn marks remain on some of the stones as a result of fire from the Roman conquest of the city in 70 AD.
12. There are remains of shops that were part of a large shopping plaza at the southern part of the Western Wall.
13. This is the same wall that Jesus and His disciples would have seen.
14. On the Southern Stair entrance to the temple is where Jesus would have taught His disciples and entered the Temple Mount area.
15. At the southernmost end of the Western Wall is a significant stone which stood upon the uttermost southwestern corner of the Temple Mount.
• It has words written in Hebrew that mean “The Trumpeter’s House.”
• A priest would stand at this corner announcing with a loud trumpet the beginning of the Sabbath, and other festival days the Jews celebrated.
Solo Traveling through Israel 2016
I wanted to make a 1 minute video of my trip to Israel/Palestine. I could not fit every clip, but enjoy!
Experience:
Solo-traveled through Israel having seen the holy cities of Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nazareth. Wandered the vibrant city of Tel Aviv where youngsters filled the streets, Yogi's worked out on the beach, and pretty much every Tel Avivian owned a dog or were out jogging or cycling. Dipped in the waters of the Sea of Galilee where Jesus is said to have walked on water. Explored the ancient ruins near Tiberius while eating fish caught from the Sea of Galilee. Ventured along the coastline of Israel and the Mediterranean Sea through Caesereas, Haifa, Akkos, and Rosh HaNikra. Road tripped through the Judaean Desert, Kalia and Dead Sea while walking the great heights of the Masada cliffs. All the while meeting spectacular people along the way. I certainly left my heart in Israel.

Holy Land Overview Tour: See all the Major Holy Sites of Israel in HD
See all the holy sites as you learn new facts about what makes the Holy Land so special and unique! HolyLandSite.com.
Israel . . . Land of the Bible . . . Land of Faith . . . the Holy Land, revered throughout recorded history as the cradle of monotheistic religion. For a person of faith whose beliefs are rooted in the Bible, there is no place on earth like the Holy Land. In this narrow strip of land lies the source of religious belief of much of mankind. Here, amongst the barren hills and fertile plains, man’s spirit learned to soar and from here a new message went out to all the world: “. . . and many peoples shall come, and say, “Come, let us go up to the Mountain of the Lord, to the House of the God of Jacob; that He may teach us His ways and that we may walk in His paths. For out of Zion (Hill next to Jerusalem) will go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem (Isaiah 2:3,4).
The unique factor about the Holy Land is its special location in the World. Situated as it is, straddling the divide between Africa and Asia, the area has almost always been a battleground. Wave after wave of conquerors poured into it, anxious to control the strategic trade routes linking the centers of the ancient world. It’s not by accident that it’s virtually in the center of the world. In God’s master plan of creation, He decided to place Israel exactly in the center of His creation. Located on a tiny land bridge between Africa and Asia, there is no other way to get between the two of them except through Israel. It’s located on the crossroads of the world. Whoever wanted to trade between the two continents, or control the known world, had to conquer and control Israel. For this reason, there have been more wars and events that have taken place in Israel than any other country on earth. God positioned Israel in its unique location in order to influence the world and be on “Center Stage” so all of creation would know that He alone is God.
For nearly 2,000 years, Christian visitors from all over the world have come to the Holy Land, the land of their spiritual heritage. With Bible in hand, they have walked the places Jesus walked and prayed in the places He preached and prayed. For Christians, Israel is a place like no other. It provides them a one of a kind opportunity to experience the land of the Bible, to deepen their faith, and to be spiritually transformed for a lifetime.

2. It’s mentioned over 500 times in the Bible.
3. It’s first mentioned as the city in which King Melchizedek, King of Salem (Jerusalem) lived (Gen. 14:17). Melchizedek was a figure of Christ as he had neither beginning of days or end of life.
Hebrews 7:1: For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham as he was returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, 2 to whom also Abraham apportioned a tenth part of all the spoils, was first of all, by the translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then also king of Salem, which is king of peace.
4. Jerusalem is the special dwelling place of God on this earth.

6. Jerusalem was partially conquered by the Israelites when they entered the Promised Land.
7. King David purchased the original Temple Mount in Jerusalem from Araunah when it was just a threshing floor. He purchased it to build an altar to the Lord.
8. Jerusalem was then later fully conquered by King David.
9. Afterward, King David set up his throne in Jerusalem, and it became the ruling center of Israel from then on.
10. King Solomon then built the Temple in 960 AD on the exact location where Abraham was going to sacrifice Isaac. This exact location was also the very threshing floor that King David had purchased.

20. On top of the Temple Mount Platform (and over the existing second temple, which was later removed) a new massive temple was built by King Herod in 19 BC and was made more beautiful than any before it.

Mt. Tabor Overview Tour: Transfiguration of Christ, Israel, Matthew 17:1–8, Mark 9:2–8, Luke 9:28–36
Mount Tabor: Transfiguration of Christ, Church of the Transfiguration
Location
1. Mount Tabor, rising like a dome-like mountain from the Plain of Jezreel, is the place where Christian tradition places the transfiguration of Jesus.
2. It’s about 11 miles (15 km.) southwest of the Sea of Galilee and about 5 miles (8 km.) east of Nazareth.
3. Mount Tabor stands some 1,500 ft. (457 m.) above the Jezreel Valley plain in lower Galilee.
4. It held a strategic position at the junction of several trade routes. For this reason, many battles have been fought around it.
5. It is mentioned as one of the key mountains in Scripture: The north and the south, you have created them; Tabor and Hermon joyously praise your name (Psalm 89:12).
Historical Background
1. In the Old Testament, Mount Tabor is described as a sacred mountain and a place for worship. It is not mentioned by name in the New Testament.
2. Throughout its history, it has been a place where mankind has sought contact with the divine.
3. It also served as an important fortress during the Old Testament, Greek, Roman, and Crusader times.
4. It is best known as the believed place where the transfiguration of Christ took place, an event in the Gospels in which Jesus is transfigured upon an unnamed mountain and speaks with Moses and Elijah as described in Matthew 17:1–9, Mark 9:2–8, and Luke 9:28–36.
5. Christian tradition in the early centuries named Mount Tabor as the place of the transfiguration of Christ. This location is cited in early apocryphal writings and was accepted by the Syriac and Byzantine churches.
6. The earliest identification of the Mount of Transfiguration as Tabor is by Origen in the 3rd century.
7. During the Byzantine period, due to the importance of Mount Tabor in Christian tradition, it became a pilgrimage site from the 4th century and onward. According to descriptions of the pilgrims visiting this site during the 6th century, there were three churches that resided on the top of Mount Tabor.
8. Some biblical scholars today now question this tradition. These scholars see the much higher Mount Hermon as a more likely location as it was closer to Caesarea Philippi, where Peter’s confession of Christ took place.
9. However, there is great value in considering the 2,000-year traditional history of this site.
10. Scripture says that the transfiguration of Christ took place 6 days after Peter’s confession of Christ in Caesarea Philippi. Mount Tabor is about 40 miles (65 km.) south of Caesarea Philippi which could easily have been reached in 6 days.
11. It’s really not important where this event happened but that it did happen.
12. Today, there are two main churches and monasteries on top of Mount Tabor marking the event of the transfiguration of Christ. They include the Franciscan Basilica of the Transfiguration and St. Elias Greek Orthodox Church.
Places of Interest
1. Franciscan Basilica of the Transfiguration – Main church that is visited and sits at the highest part of Mount Tabor. This church, which is part of a Franciscan monastery complex, was completed in 1924. It was built on the ruins of an ancient (4th–6th-century) Byzantine church and a 12th-century church of the Crusader Kingdom period.
2. St. Elias Greek Orthodox Church – Located on the northeast side of Mount Tabor. It’s named after the Prophet Elijah.
3. Tower & Walls
4. Other ancient structures, chapels, cisterns, and quarries.
5. Descentibus Chapel
6. Melchizedek Chapel
7. Jezreel Valley

Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Nathanael said to him, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”

IDF Soldiers Liberate the Old City of Jerusalem
In June 1967, Israel's soldiers overcame Arab troops and reached the Western Wall -- the ancient remnant of the Jewish temple. At that moment, the Old City of Jerusalem, lost to the Jewish people for 2,000 years, was finally in Israel's hands.

Biblical Bethel is the site of amazing things that happened in the Bible.
Location
1. Bethel is in the hill country of the Samaria region about 10 miles (17 km.) north of Jerusalem.
2. Bethel stood at several main crossroads in Israel. It was on the main north-south road that passed through the central hill country from Hebron in the south to Shechem in the north, and it was on the main east-west route leading from Jericho to the Mediterranean Sea.
3. It is one of the highest places in Israel sitting at an elevation of 2,900 ft. (886 m.). For this reason, it was a place of worship, both to God and false gods.
4. Today, Bethel can be found at Khalom Ya'akov Antiquities Site.
5. It’s located on a high mountain north of the modern-day city of Beit El.
6. It is a recognized site by the government and is fenced and secured.
Historical Background
1. Bethel is mentioned sixty times in the Bible, representing over thirty distinct stories and prophecies, all of them in the Old Testament. Only is Jerusalem mentioned more times in the Bible than Bethel.
2. Bethel means “House of God.”
3. The site of Bethel was previously thought to be in the nearby village of Baytin at Khirbet Beit El (Khirbet means ruins in Hebrew).
4. In 1980, Ze'ev Vilnai, an Israeli geographer and author researched this Khalom Ya'akov Antiquities Site and determined it to be the biblical Bethel instead of the traditional site at Khirbet Beit El.
5. Khalom Ya'akov Antiquities Site has overwhelming evidence suggesting it to be the biblical Bethel.
