STUCK on Wheeler's Pass in Nevada
Today we set out to conquer Wheelers Pass off road right outside Las Vegas just after a few days of snowing on the pass! WE GOT STUCK!
The week before we tried to make the summit from the Cold Creek side, but was unable to make it up. We were moving along at a great pace until we come up to a stranded Toyota Tacoma, which eventually got us all stuck! However...lucky for us two guys named Jerry and Albert with Jeep Wranglers saved our butts and helped us turn around.

Wheeler Peak is the tallest mountain in both the Snake Range and White Pine County, in Nevada, United States. Its summit elevation of 13,065 feet (3,982 m) makes it the second-tallest peak in Nevada, just behind Boundary Peak.[3] Wheeler Peak's topographic prominence of 7,563 feet (2,305 m) makes it the most topographically prominent peak in White Pine County and the second-most prominent peak in Nevada, just behind Mount Charleston.[4] The mountain is located in Great Basin National Park and was named for George Wheeler, leader of the Wheeler Survey of the late 19th century.

We are living the American dream driving the Historic Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica but we are doing some detours to visit some places we like.
In this 42nd episode, after a quick stop in Coral Pink Sand Dunes, we leave Utah and enter in Arizona. We visit Glen Canyon Dam and Horseshoe Bend.

Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park is a state park of Utah, United States, located between Mount Carmel Junction and Kanab, south and west of U.S. Highway 89 in southwestern Utah. The park features coral-hued sand dunes located beside red sandstone cliffs.
The Dunes are formed from the erosion of pink-colored Navajo Sandstone surrounding the park. High winds passing through the notch between the Moquith and Moccasin Mountains pick up loose sand particles and then drop them onto the dunes because of the Venturi effect. The dunes are estimated to be between 10,000 and 15,000 years old.
The park allows camping, hiking, off-road vehicle driving, and photography. There is a conservation area of 265 acres (1.07 km2), and the total grounds include 3,370 acres (13.6 km2). It was established as a Utah state park in 1963.
The Coral Pink Sand Dunes tiger beetle (Cicindela albissima) is an insect species that is endemic to the dunes, being found nowhere else in the world.
This state park contains most of the remaining individuals of a rare plant, Welsh's milkweed (Asclepias welshii), a federally listed threatened species.
Glen Canyon Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam on the Colorado River in northern Arizona, United States, near the town of Page. The 710-foot (220 m) high dam was built by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) from 1956 to 1966 and forms Lake Powell, one of the largest man-made reservoirs in the U.S. with a capacity of 27 million acre feet (33 km3). The dam is named for Glen Canyon, a series of deep sandstone gorges now flooded by the reservoir; Lake Powell is named for John Wesley Powell, who in 1869 led the first expedition to traverse the Colorado's Grand Canyon by boat.

A dam in Glen Canyon was studied as early as 1924, but these plans were initially dropped in favor of the Hoover Dam (completed in 1936) which was located in the Black Canyon. By the 1950s, due to rapid population growth in the seven U.S. and two Mexican states comprising the Colorado River Basin, the Bureau of Reclamation deemed the construction of additional reservoirs necessary. However, the USBR faced opposition when it proposed the Echo Park Dam in Utah's Dinosaur National Monument, which the nascent environmental movement saw as a legal threat to the status of protected lands. After a long fight, the USBR agreed not to build the dam in Dinosaur National Monument, but only if the environmentalists did not oppose the proposed dam in Glen Canyon.
Since first filling to capacity in 1980, Lake Powell water levels have fluctuated greatly depending on water demand and annual runoff. Operation of Glen Canyon Dam helps ensure an equitable distribution of water between the states of the Upper Colorado River Basin (Colorado, Wyoming, and most of New Mexico and Utah) and the Lower Basin (California, Nevada and most of Arizona). During years of drought, Glen Canyon guarantees a water delivery to the Lower Basin states, without the need for rationing in the Upper Basin. In wet years, it captures extra runoff for future use. The dam is also a major source of hydroelectricity, averaging over 4 billion kilowatt hours per year. The long and winding Lake Powell, known for its scenic beauty and recreational opportunities including houseboating, fishing and water-skiing, attracts millions of tourists each year to the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

Horseshoe Bend is a horseshoe-shaped incised meander of the Colorado River located near the town of Page, Arizona, in the United States.
Horseshoe Bend is located 5 miles (8.0 km) downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, about 4 miles (6.4 km) southwest of Page.
It is accessible via hiking a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) round trip from U.S. Route 89. Horseshoe Bend can be viewed from the steep cliff above.
The overlook is 4,200 feet (1,300 m) above sea level, and the Colorado River is at 3,200 feet (980 m) above sea level, making it a 1,000-foot (300 m) drop.

Death Valley - Road Trip
Da Lone Pine prendiamo la strada per la Valle della Morte. La strada è deserta, come il paesaggio circostante.
La Valle della Morte è un parco situato nello Stato della California e in piccola parte nel Nevada, a poco più di 200 km a nord-ovest di Las Vegas; è conosciuta per una delle depressioni più profonde dell'emisfero settentrionale con i suoi 86 metri sotto il livello del mare nel punto più basso.
La Valle della Morte si è vista riconoscere lo status di Parco Nazionale soltanto nel 1994; è uno degli scenari più particolari di tutti gli Stati Uniti.
Sebbene si presenti come un ambiente arido e inadatto alla vita, la Valle della Morte rappresenta un ecosistema importantissimo.
Fra le sue dune di sabbia, le sue gole di pietra, i suoi crateri spenti, pullula una varietà di flora e fauna, compresi alcuni rari esemplari endemici.
Qui, in Inverno, può essere molto freddo e in estate il caldo raggiunge temperature davvero pericolose
per la sopravvivenza umana.
Il record è rappresentato dai 57° C nel 1913.
Una volta entrati nel Parco, pian piano la strada comincia a scendere e la temperatura…a salire:
come se si stesse lentamente scendendo all’inferno.
Ci fermiamo alle Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes: questa è la prima meta della Valle della Morte, le dune di sabbia un pezzo di Sahara trapiantato in America.
Attenzione ai cartelli che consigliano di non addentrarsi nel deserto dopo le 10 di mattina.
Purtroppo, noi, come tutti i turisti, arriviamo dopo le 10, e camminiamo sulla sabbia per 5, 10 minuti, solo per qualche foto.
Dopo questa pausa proseguiamo il tragitto verso l’oasi di Furnace Creek
Furnace Creek è un luogo storico della Valle ed è qui, dopo la scoperta di depositi di borace, che si avviò l'estrazione su larga scala di borace nella Valle della Morte.
Ci fermiamo presso la Death Valley - Harmony Borax Works.
L’Harmony Borax Works è diventato famoso per il Twenty-mule teams, squadre di diciotto muli e due cavalli attaccati a due grandi carri che trasportavano il borace dalle miniere attraverso il deserto del Mojave sino alla ferrovia più vicina. Oltre ai due carri c’era un carro cisterna come scorta d’acqua durante il percorso. Tra carri e animali la carovana raggiungeva la lunghezza di ben 55 metri.
Prossima tappa, Zabriskie Point.
Zabriskie Point un tempo era un lago, oggi è una terra plissettata risultato di millenni di sedimentazione ed erosione che formarono i caratteristici calanchi dorati su cui poi si posarono le ceneri vulcaniche.
Zabriskie Point è di una bellezza disarmante, da perdere il fiato, nel senso letterale del termine.
Eccoci ora al Golden Canyon. Ci troviamo a 3 miglia a sud di Fornace Creek, qui c'è un trail di quasi 2miglia, che attraversa un piccolo canyon con formazioni rocciose di colore giallo.
Nel Golden Canyon, sono state girate alcune scene della saga di Star Wars.
Proseguiamo per Devil's Golf Course.
Devil's Golf Course, letteralmente campo da golf del diavolo, è uno strato di sale, in gran parte cloruro di sodio, spesso tra 1 e 2 m circa, che si estende per 64 km di lunghezza e per 8 km di larghezza, in tutto circa 518 kmq.
Dopo aver pranzato in auto con l’aria condizionata a 1000, andiamo ora a Badwater Besin Basin.
Badwater è la località più bassa degli Stati Uniti.
Questo è un lago salato a -86 m sul livello del mare
Si tratta del lago preistorico Manly ormai prosciugato.
Lo scenario è di una bellezza ultraterrena, un paesaggio quasi lunare, dove si vive un’atmosfera unica e un silenzio misterioso.
Qui il caldo è insopportabile, non abbiamo un termometro, ma alcuni italiani parlano di 50°
Rientriamo in auto e ripartiamo per Artist's Drive.
Artist's Drive è un loop da percorrere in automobile su una strada a senso unico, che sale sulle pendici dei monti, con splendido affaccio sulle collinette dipinte di una tavolozza incredibile: azzurro, verde, rosa e ocra.
I colori delle rocce, sono dovuti all’ossidazione di diversi metalli.
Infatti, queste rocce sono la prova che nel passato ci fu un periodo di origine vulcanica violento nella zona.
Purtroppo la nostra visita alla Death Valley termina qui e dobbiamo rimetterci in marcia per Las Vegas

Death Valley National Park is an American national park that straddles the California—Nevada border, east of the Sierra Nevada. The park boundaries include Death Valley, the northern section of Panamint Valley, the southern section of Eureka Valley, and most of Saline Valley. The park occupies an interface zone between the arid Great Basin and Mojave deserts, protecting the northwest corner of the Mojave Desert and its diverse environment of salt-flats, sand dunes, badlands, valleys, canyons, and mountains. Death Valley is the largest national park in the contiguous United States and the hottest, driest and lowest of all the national parks in the United States.

The most famous segment of U.S. Highway 50 is largely useless, running through Nevada about 100 or so miles south of Interstate 80, which is what sane people use today to travel the state. And yet this 287-mile stretch of highway has attained legendary status as the Loneliest Road in America. The designation was made by Life magazine in 1986 and has stuck, in good part because Nevada tourism authorities recognized what the acolytes of ruin porn have long known about the strange magic desolation works on the human spirit. There are, today, Loneliest Road signs along the road, and some stores in the sparse towns along Route 50 display I survived Route 50 signs in windows covered with geologic layers of grime.

World's Only Sand Ski Resort
Monte Kaolino
Located in Hirschau, Bavaria, Germany, Monte Kaolino is a ski and snowboarding resort that operates on sand, not snow. Created as a by-product of kaolinite mining, 35,000,000 tonnes of sand were pulled from the mine which became the slopes for the resort. Kaolinite, named after the Kao-ling mountain in Jiangxi Province in China, has been mined in Germany since 1833 but in 1901 Amberger Kalinwerke started mining Kaolinite. In the process of separating the mineral they ended up with piles of quartz sand and the pile began. Year after year of piling up quartz sand resulted in a massive hill of this stuff by the 1950s so much sand had been piled up that people started experimenting skiing on it.
By 1956 a ski club was formed but the fact that this is a sand dune this ski hill operates on months opposite of a normal ski hill. Only in the summer months can own coast down the dune even though they receive snow in winter. Monte Kaolino offers multi ski runs as well as a terrain park.
In 2007 extensive renovations took place. Not only did the skill hill get an upgrade but also the trails, geopark, pool and surrounding camping facilities. That’s not all one can look forward to when visiting Monte Kaolino, a 656 foot or 200 meter long cable car bring people to the top in boat shaped cars as well as the Alpine Coaster, a roller coaster that rises to the top of the dune on one side then ventures down off to the side. This is a fun ride for the whole family as it buzzes just feet off the ground. If swimming is more your thing the Dune Pool at the base of a peak offers plenty of space to swim as well as a Flintstones like fort to play in.
Monte Kaolino is home to the world sandboarding championships which have many of the same events you’d see in the olympics. Boarders get some serious speed going down this hill with some clocking in at over 60 mph or almost 100 Km/h.
