A visit to Seaton Delaval Hall
Seaton Delaval Hall is a Grade I listed country house in Northumberland, England. It is near the coast just north of Newcastle upon Tyne. Located between Seaton Sluice and Seaton Delaval, it was designed by Sir John Vanbrugh in 1718 for Admiral George Delaval; it is now owned by the National Trust.
Since completion of the house in 1728, it has had an unfortunate history. Neither architect nor patron lived to see its completion; it then passed through a succession of heirs, being lived in only intermittently. Most damagingly of all, in 1822 the central block was gutted by fire, and has remained an empty shell ever since.
The 18th-century gardens of the hall are Grade II* listed on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.
As with many big old houses, Seaton Delaval Hall is alleged to have a ghost.
There is a first-floor window on the North front of the Hall where a white-clad figure stands. This, according to legend, is the White Lady, a girl who fell in love with the Delaval heir Lord John, and died of a broken heart because firstly the marriage was forbidden then he became ill and died. When she found out, her health also deteriorated until finally she also passed away. Her figure can only be seen at certain times of the year standing at the window awaiting his return.
After forty years without a roof, John Dobson, the architect of much of Victorian Newcastle, was hired to shore up the building.
In 1862 one of England's worst ever mining disasters happened only a mile from Seaton Delaval Hall at Hartley Colliery. Two hundred men and boys died when the mine shaft caved in, trapping those below.

Seaton Deleval Mausoleum
An abandoned house hidden away amonst the trees behind Seaton Deleval Hall, just off the Northumberland Coast
The mausoleum was built by Sir John Hussey Delaval as a memorial to his son John who died in 1775, aged 20, according to the Shell Guide, “as a result of being kicked in a vital organ by a laundry maid to whom he was paying addresses”. It is said never to have been used for burial, however, because Sir John could not agree a fee for its consecration with the Bishop of Durham.
Around 1900, brick partitions, an extra floor, a staircase and three fireplaces were inserted in the mausoleum so it could be used as a house. But by 1950 the house had been abandoned and the structure was already derelict.

Seaton Delaval Hall Mausoleum
I love exploring so we decided to go and find Seaton Delaval Hall Mausoleum. It’s hidden away in the trees and it is quite a little trek to get there but definitely worth it in the end. The Mausoleum has never been used for burial as the grounds were never consecrated by the Church. It now stands almost in ruins in a beautiful sleep spot in Northumberland’s breathtaking countryside and near Coast.
