Tour of the Interior of the Shinbashi Enbujo
We walk through the Shinbashi Enbujo in April 2010, shortly before it is to become the main kabuki theatre in Tokyo, while the Kabuki-za is demolished and built anew over a projected three-year period. The interior is clearly different from that of the Kabuki-za, being much more modern but also far less atmospheric. And with kabuki, atmosphere plays a major role, even in the playhouse itself.
Walking to Shinbashi Enbujo.MP4
We emerge on a cool, drizzly Tokyo day from the Higashi Ginza exit of the Hibiya Line subway to see the Kabuki-za across the street before we turn around and head for the Shinbashi Enbujo. The latter will be the chief kabuki venue after April 30, 2010, when the Kabuki-za prepares to go before the wrecking ball prior to its sixth incarnation since 1889.

冬枯れした蓮池のメランコリックな趣にかなり惹かれるものを感じました。
The Shinobazu Pond (不忍池 Shinobazu no Ike) is a pond within Ueno Park (a spacious public park located in the Ueno section of Taitō, Tokyo, Japan), and a historically prominent Shitamachi feature often appearing in history and works of art. The park occupies the site of the former Kan'ei-ji, a temple closely associated with the Tokugawa shoguns, who had built it to guard Edo Castle against the northeast, a direction believed to be unlucky by traditional geomancy. The temple was destroyed during the Boshin War. The pond, although modified many times and even once drained, is natural. (from Wikipedia)

Magic Ring Hawker in Shinbashi on March 9th, 1991
Views of SL Plaza in front of Shinbashi Station in 1991, where a man hawking magic rings attracted a crowd of people trying to figure out how they worked. Selling for Y300 each, he seemed to be fairly successful at selling them.
If you look closely at the background in this video, there are several buildings that have since been torn down to make way for new structures. Old solid-color Keihin-Tohoku Line trains can be seen passing by as well.
