Shiroyama Park (Shiroyama Kōen) is a park in downtown Kagoshima that stretches over Mount Shiroyama. With an elevation of 107 meters, the mountain used to the site of a castle fortification, which led to its name. Shiroyama literally means castle mountain in Japanese. The castle's former grounds at the base of the mountain now are the site of the Reimeikan Museum nowadays.
The park is most famous for its Shiroyama Observatory with magnificent views over downtown Kagoshima, Kagoshima Bay and Sakurajima. The night view is also great, especially if a fair sky and bright moon allow Sakurajima. Beautiful views can also be enjoyed from the Satsuma no Yu outdoor hot spring bath in hotel Shiroyama ,which is also open to non-staying guests.
Moreover, the park will hold the interest of travelers interested in Japanese history since it was the site of the final battle of the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877. The local hero Saigo Takamori is said to have made his last stand at Saigo Cave, situated within the park.

TAKAYAMA THINGS TO DO & WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT! | Backpacking Japan Vlog 6
From Osaka I took a train to Takayama in the Hida Region. I had no idea what to expect of Takayama, this Castle Town in the Mountains close to the Japanese Alps but I loved it.
I started off walking along Sanmachi Street which is the most popular area of Takayama for tourists as it's where all of the old wooden merchant buildings are and they are now full of shops and restaurants, there's also plenty of street food along here too.
To get away from the crowds I headed into Shiroyama Park, walked up to the Castle ruins and was greeted by views of snow capped mountains! I then went and did the Higashiyama Temple Walk which is a row of 10 Temples all signposted with a footpath between them, I really loved it here too. To end my day I went up Kitayama Park and although I didn't stay for sunset, this would be a great place to watch the sunset in Japan!
The following morning I went to Takayama's famous morning markets that are open from 8:00-12:00, they are only quite small so didn't take long to visit which meant I could take a bus from Takayama Bus Station with Nohi Bus Service to Hida Folk Village, an open air museum which is a popular place to visit in Takayama early and miss the crowds, I recommend you do this too!

Hakutaka Shinkanesen Arriving at Shin-Takaoka Station, Toyama Prefecture | The Real Japan | HD
The Hakutaka (White hawk) is a high-speed shinkansen train service jointly operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East) and West Japan Railway Company (JR West) between Tokyo and Kanazawa on the Hokuriku Shinkansen line in Japan.
Shin-Takaoka is a little-known (but not so little) shinkansen station on the Hokuriku line. If you're travelling from Tokyo, it's one stop before Kanazawa - the final stop on the line.
On this day I had arranged to meet a Periscoper for the first time. His Periscope name is BDJoetsu. BD are his initials and he lives in Joetsu - a town not far from Nagoya. BD was born in Scotland but has lived in Japan for more than 20 years. (Check him out - his scopes are really interesting about everyday life in Japan.)
We agreed to meet up and spend the day in Kanazawa. I had stayed in the beautiful mountain village of Ainokura in Gokayama the night before, heading down to Takaoka by bus to catch the Hakutaka shinkansen to Kanazawa. DB and I were messaging each other that morning to co-ordinate a rough arrival time in Kanazawa of around 10:00am.
I told him my wife and I were aiming to pick up shinkansen at Shin-Takaoka around 9:30am. He replied saying he thought the shinkansen he was on from Nagoya stopped at Shin-Takaoka around that time.
Wouldn't it be cool, I thought, if we met on the train en-route rather than just at Kanazawa Station!? BD said he was in car 4 - so we headed up to the platform and waited in the boarding location for the fourth carriage.
The beautifully-designed Hakuata, with its sky blue roof and white and copper side livery, glided into the station and as it came to a halt, there - right in front of us - was BD waving to us from his window seat! (That's when you can hear me laughing as the train comes to a stop - almost in disbelief - at how small the world is sometimes!)
