Hida Kokubunji Temple - 飛騨国分寺 (built 746 onward)
The Hida Kokubunji Temple was constructed in 746 by Emperor Shomu to pray for the nation's peace and prosperity. Temples of this type were fairly common both in Japan and in neighboring Korea (for example, see Toji Temple in Kyoto and Hwangnyongsa Temple in Gyeongju, Korea). The oldest surviving structure is the Main Hall, dating from the 16th century. The three story pagoda was reconstructed in 1821 during the Edo period.

Nagano Prefecture's Kiso Valley in Autumn
The Kiso area is home to eleven historic post towns including the well preserved Magome, Tsumago and Narai. Another town, Kiso Fukushima, is a quaint riverside valley town famously featuring the Kiso Fukushima Checkpoint, Kozen-ji Temple (housing Asia’s largest dry rock garden) and dozens of old Ryokan backing onto the river for an aesthetic reminiscent of Kyoto. No trip to Kiso is complete without walking the Nakasendo trail, however there are also many other hiking opportunities in the surrounding mountains.
The Kiso Valley (木曽路, Kisoji) is located in Nagano Prefecture, and runs alongside the mountains of the Central Alps. An ancient 70 km trade route called the Kisoji was developed along the valley and served as a very important means of commerce in the area.
The Kisoji became even more important from the beginning of the Edo Period, when it was amalgamated with other routes in the formation of the 500 km long Nakasendo. The Nakasendo (path through mountains) was one of the two means of transportation between Edo and Kyoto. It contrasted with the other principal transportation route of the time, the Tokaido, which ran along the sea shore.

Things to do Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine 桜山八幡宮 Japan 2017.
The origins of Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine date from the time of the Emperor Nintoku (413 - 439), when he reguested Prince Takefurukuma-no-mikoto to subjugate the monster Ryoumen Sukuna, an incredible beast with 2 heads, 4 arms and 4 legs.
Before undertaking his task, the warrior enshrined his father, the Emperor Ojin as the deitty of this sanctuary, and prayed for the success of his missiuon.
In 1683, through the benefaction of Lord Kanamori, the shirine was enlarged and offcially established for the protection of the town.
More than 1,500,000 people vist the shirine annually. The Takayama Matsuri (Festival) is regarded as one of the three most beautiful festivals in Japan. (along with Chichibu Matsuri in Saitama Prefecture and the Gion Matsuri in Kyoto.)
The focus of the festival is the magnificent floats which are pulled through the strees of the town.
The Takayama Matsuri actually composed of two festivals: the Spring Festival (April 14th and 15th), in which 12 floats take part, and the Autumn Festival (October 9th and 10th) which features 11 floats. The Takayama Festival began about 350 years ago as a simple village ceremony. Since Takayama is in Hida, the center of Japan’s timber producing region, the town grew as an important distribution center for the area, attracting large numbers of sake brewrers, cloth merchants, woodworkers, and other craftsmen. As the result of these rich merchants’ support, and the pride in the high quality work of the artisans, the floats beccame more and more magnificent, as a result of competition developed among the various districts of the town.
Japan Travel: Kofukuji Temple one of four greatest temples of Nara Period, Nara20
Japan Travel: Kofukuji Temple one of four greatest temples of Nara Period, Nara20
Kofukuji Temple used to be the family temple of the Fujiwara, which is the most powerful family clan over much of the Nara and Heian Periods. The temple was founded in Nara at the same time as the capital foundation in 710. At the height of Fujiwara domination, the temple consisted of over 150 buildings.
Today there remain a couple of buildings of great historic importance, including a five story pagoda and a three story pagoda. The five story pagoda is 50 meter tall, ranking second in Japan, after the five story pagoda at Kyoto's Toji Temple with only seven meter gap. Kofukuji's pagoda is both a landmark and symbol of Nara. It was first built in 730, and most recent reconstruction was done in 1426.
While addmission to Kofukuji's temple grounds is free and it can be entered around the clock, there are two areas that require addmission fee: Kofukuji's National Treasure Museum and the Eastern Golden Hall. The National Treasure Museum, recently renovated, exhibits part of the temple's great art collection and is something that must not miss out on for lovers of Buddhist art. Among the many outstanding exhibits, the three-faced, six-armed Ashura Statue is one of the most renowned Buddhist statues in all of Japan.
Hours: 9:00 to 17:00 (National Treasure Museum and Eastern Golden Hall)
Closed: Opened all year round.
Admission: 600 yen (National Treasure Museum), 300 yen (Eastern Golden Hall), 800 yen (both)

Shorinji(聖林寺)- YAMATO UNKNOWN ORIGIN
This is a quiet temple built on a hill outside the town of Sakurai. One can see the whole of Mount Miwa from the main gates.
Eleven-faced Kannon / National treasure Created during the 8th century
This statue of Buddha radiates universally-encompassing benevolence. It has won acclaim from many artists. It is cited as a representative work in the history of Japanese sculpture. The site is not heavily visited by tourists, and the stillness allows visitors to spend time communing with the Buddha.

■About YAMATO
More than ten centuries ago, a capital of Japan existed here.
Several generations of kings of the “Yamato Dynasty” ruled here and expanded their influence outward.
Eventually, Yamato became a word meaning the whole of Japan.
The foundation of Japan was built here.
This ancient capital - older than Kyoto or Nara - did not develop as other ancient capitals did, and thus was left largely untouched.
Feel the unknown mystery of the history of Japan in this quiet, untraveled location.

Sights & Sounds Near Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara, Japan
The video starts with the running water from the entrance purification Temizuya fountain and a spinning pan towards the source of drum beats, cymbals and chanting, back along stone lanterns and to the fountain again and finishing on the building where the chants originate.
The video has been edited from its original format by using the YouTube editing to stabilize the image (from my shaky handling) and improve image quality.
Takayama Inari Shrine 100 Torii Gates
Takayama Inari Shrine has over 100 small torii gates along a walk path up to a man-made waterfall. There is also a small koi pond and the garden area is really nice. The monks were kind enough to let my fly the drone and get some nice video.
