Tallulah Gorge, the most spectacular canyon in the eastern U.S.!
Visitors can hike the rim trails to several overlooks and see one of the most spectacular canyons in the eastern U.S. and where the movie Deliverance starring Burt Reynolds was filmed in 1972. Tallulah Gorge is two miles long and nearly 1,000 feet deep.floor.A suspension bridge sways 80 feet above the rocky bottom, providing spectacular views of the river and waterfalls.
At the dawn of the 20th Century, Tallulah Falls was a bustling resort town that rivaled Niagra Falls and people came from all over to see the waterfalls and the awesome gorge. Overlooking Tallulah Gorge, an ancient, awesome 1000-foot chasm carved over millions of years by the Tallulah River is Tallulah Gorge State Park with an impressive Interpretive Center, gorge overlooks, hiking and biking trails and a suspension bridge. Tallulah Falls is actually a series of six waterfalls cascading down through Tallulah Gorge. Tallulah Station offers local artworks as well as warm cups of specialty coffees and sweets including ice cream. Numerous hiking trails are close by, including the Shortline Trail, a 3-mile paved trail following the Old Tallulah Falls Railroad Bed. Lake Tugalo and Lake Yonah both offer fishing, swimming and non-motorized boating.
Exhibits in the park’s Jane Hurt Yarn Interpretive Center highlight the rich history of this Victorian resort town, as well as the rugged terrain and fragile ecosystem of the area. The persistent trillium, monkey-face orchid and green salamander are protected species found within the gorge. An award-winning film takes viewers on a dramatic journey through the gorge, including footage of rock climbers and kayakers. A gift shop offers snacks, jewelry, toys, books, walking sticks, clothing and more.

Memories of a Mountain Shortline - A History of the Tallulah Falls Railroad
This short 6-minute sample clip is from the almost one-hour long video documentary covering the history of the Tallulah Falls Railway. Perhaps one of the most beloved, but trecherous rail lines in the US, the TF operated for over 50 years between the towns of Corneila, GA and Franklin, NC. The TF Railway serviced the once booming resort town of Tallulah Falls, known by many during its hayday in the early 1900s as the Niagara of the South. The full version of this video will premier at Rabun Gap Nacoochee School on November 14, 2015. Admission is free. The documentary will also be available on DVD at numerous retail outlets in Northeast Georgia. This video is dedicated to two great Georgia railroad historians, the late Dess Oliver and the late Rutherford Ellis.

The Shortline Sensory Trail
The former roadbed of the defunct Tallulah Falls Railroad now provides a paved, handicap friendly biking and walking trail at Tallulah Gorge State Park in N.E. Georgia.
8th Grade Students from Tallulah Falls School enhanced the experience by designing and funding two electronic sensory signs with audio to assist the visually impaired in understanding the trail's unique features.

One of the most spectacular canyons in the eastern U.S., Tallulah Gorge is two miles long and nearly 1,000 feet deep. Visitors can hike rim trails to several overlooks, or they can obtain a permit to hike to the gorge floor (100 per day, not available during water releases). A suspension bridge sways 80 feet above the rocky bottom, providing spectacular views of the river and waterfalls. Tightrope walkers have twice crossed the gorge, and visitors can still see towers used by Karl Wallenda. A paved path follows an on old railroad bed, perfect for strollers and bicycles, while mountain bikers can test their skills on a challenging 10 mile trail.
