PARAGLIDING GRANADA - SPAIN - SIERRA NEVADA
Have you ever tried paragliding? Would you like to have a go at it now? Then, the easiest way to do it is by tandem flights, with qualified professional tandem paragliding pilots. The two-seater is a glider designed to carry the weight of two people, the pilot and the passenger. Not prior experience is needed, either age or physical limitations are true factors. We can glide just about anyone upon a tandem flight. All is needed is for the person to be able to take few steps and his health’s compatible with flights. For instance: not to suffer from heart diseases or phobia to heights. Children under 18 years must weight 40kg, and be authorized by a parent or guardians.
The takeoff is done in a simple way. The pilot takes care of everything; the passenger only has to follow simple instructions, to be keen in taking a few steps, and to let the glider lift him/her up smoothly into the air. Once in the air, he will be comfortably sitting in the glider’s chair until time for landing. The scenery to fly is in Cenes de la Vega’s valley. The take- off, takes place in Las Rozas (a mountain in the middle of the road towards Sierra Nevada, at the junction of Purche) the landing will take place in the village of Cenes.
Baptism flights usually last between 15 and 30 minutes, but there are two factors that we must take into account. First: meteorological conditions for that particular day. Second: the passenger’s emotion state. Often the thrill of flying for the first time, added to the new sensations experimented, air, height, speed, etc., altogether makes it inadvisable to extend the flight beyond half an hour. Our experience tells us that if the passenger enjoys his/her first tandem flight, he will want to fly alone. This will be achieved after taking an initiation course, and following more advanced courses.
Gran Altura is registered in Andalusia Junta’s active tourism with registration number: GR/en/00078, in the Andalusia’s Federation of aerial sports and in the Spanish’s Air Sports Federation, which means that we have by law all the requirements in training certification for Tandem’s flights and all the safety requirement by law, we have been teaching the paragliding activity for more than 20 years now. This gives us an extra assurance about how to approach the take- off with optimal conditions for the passenger’s safety, and to make from this a safe, exciting, and an outstanding experience. granaltura.es
The Alpujarra: An unlikely cosmopolitan hub in Spain’s Sierra Nevada
Órgiva, Spain, Feb 24 (EFE).- (Imagen: Pedro Pablo Pérez) Spend an hour in the shade of an orchard in the Alpujarra valley, a lush network of gorges hemmed in between Spain's often-snowcapped Sierra Nevada mountain range and the Mediterranean Sea, and analogies of paradise will naturally spring to mind.
Such is the undeniable natural beauty of this corner of Andalucía that a steady stream of predominantly northern European expatriates has made its way here since the late 1970s, transforming rural farming villages with once dramatically dwindling populations into unlikely cosmopolitan hubs focused on organic agriculture and an ecologically sustainable existence.
“I would not recommend this life to everybody,” Lore Ruegg, a Swiss woman who settled in the Alpujarra 18 years ago, told EFE. “If you come with romantic ideas you are going to be disappointed because a lot of work is required, it’s hard at times, and making a living isn’t easy.”
She fiddled with an orange that had dropped from one of the trees on her property just outside the town of Órgiva, the nerve-center of western Alpujarra valley, while her golden retriever, Estrella, snoozed in a patch of sun.
“But, if you are interested in the experience and in new things, and if you like to live close to nature, then yes, I would recommend it,” she added.
Lore and her husband Jordi, originally from Spain’s northeastern Catalonia region, relocated to the Alpujarra after spending three years in Findhorn, an eco-village in the north of Scotland.
They now run a small organic bakery, La Espelta, which opens four days a week and services a predominantly international clientele in Órgiva.
Their decision to trade in the cooler climes of the Scottish Highlands for blue skies in southern Spain set them on a path well-trodden by droves of like-minded people.
Nowadays, the town of Órgiva boasts of 70 distinct nationalities among its 6,000 inhabitants in a region that has seen a 50 percent drop in its population since the 1960s.
The new arrivals have somewhat tempered this downward trend and regenerated much of the land by purchasing abandoned farmhouses.
It makes for a fascinating demographic.
An alternative, hippy ethos that sprouted in the 1970s remains intrinsic to the fabric of this vibrant community, but there are also spiritual New Age groups, a well-rooted Sufi Muslim society, aspiring young agriculturalists, travelers, punks and others who simply feel rejected by the norms of mainstream culture.
“Normally you’d have to live in a city to have so many people from different cultures, countries and religions. It enriches the zone and is a factor that continues to bring people here,” Lore remarked.
Yet the Alpujarra is no stranger to intrepid foreigners.
British author Gerald Brenan settled there in the 1920s. His retrospective autobiography “South from Granada,” published in 1957 regaled an international readership with tales of mysterious traditions, poverty and descriptions of a sublime n

Veleta Summit (3 398m), Sierra Nevada in Spain
Filmed on the very summit of Veleta (3 398m) in the National park Sierra Nevada in Andalusia near Granada, Spain on 24 April 2009. Great experience, nice weather. We took it as preparation climb for the upcoming Jabal Toubkal climb in Marocco.
Veleta is the third highest peak of the Iberian peninsula and the second highest in the Sierra Nevada. Its height is given variously as 3,394 metres (11,140 ft), 3,396 metres (11,140 ft) and 3,398 metres (11,150 ft).
The mountain can be seen from the city of Granada. At Veleta's foot is the ski resort of Pradollano.

LIFT Vlog Episode 36: Skiing in the Sierra Nevada mountains
Did you know that the highest mountain in mainland Spain can be found in the Sierra Nevada mountain range down in Andalucia, in Southern Spain? It is pretty far down south for a European ski resort but the high altitude ensures that there is always sufficient snow cover - the highest peak is Mulhacén at 3479 m. It is conveniently located an hour away from the town of Granada and it does make a refreshing change from the resorts in the Alps. It has good facilities, great food and is big enough to keep you amused for a few days - do consider it for your next ski holidays. I am pleased to be able to share my Spanish ski holiday with you here on my vlog. I am off to Romania in February 2015, so it would be interesting to contrast Sierra Nevada with Poiana Brasov, Romania's best ski resort.

Los Cahorros Walking Trail Sierra Nevada, Monachil, Granada, Spain
Monachil is a small village located 8 km from Granada. It is also a starting point for Los Cahorros – Hanging bridges walk.
This walk is perfect for families, hikers, nature lovers or anyone who enjoys spending time outdoors. Walk along the river, cross several hanging bridges, check out the amazing views, take photos of waterfalls, have a closer look at Moorish acequias (irrigation system) …
Note: Take plenty of water with you, a hat and sunblock. To walk up and back down the same route took us about 2.5 hours (we did take a lot of photos on our way). If you are planning on going with small kids, you will more likely need more than 3 hours.

Travel to Granada: Skiing in Sierra Nevada, Andalucia I Vlog I Spain
First things first, Im so sorry I haven't uploaded for the past weeks. We have been on a long distance travel to the Philippines and there it was impossible to upload anything big. Then past week we have shooting in Cadiz, and for some sort of reason it was impossible too. So my apologies for that.
So, who would have thought you can travel to one of Spain´s hotest destinations and actually ski there, and not just a little ski, but a good quality one with long tracks and endless tapas on the Aprés Ski.
Well, you can and you would if you go to Sierra Nevada, belonging to Granada´s province (so you have the Albayzin just across) and being the second highest mountain in western Europe after the French alps (I didn't know that!).
Hope you enjoy our travels, as always, we did!
Cheers!
PS: A second and big I´m sorry, again, for the lousy sound. Had a problem with my audio recorder and couldn't do it any better.

Sierra Nevada Mountains, Granada, Almería, Spain, Europe
Sierra Nevada is a mountain range in the region of Andalucia, in the province of Granada and, a little further, Málaga and Almería in Spain. It contains the highest point of continental Spain the third highest in Europe[note 1], after the Caucasus Mountains and the Alps, Mulhacén at 3,479 metres (11,414 ft) above sea level. It is a popular tourist destination, as its high peaks make skiing possible in one of Europe's most southerly ski resorts, in an area along the Mediterranean Sea predominantly known for its warm temperatures and abundant sunshine. At its foothills is found the city of Granada and, a little further, Almería and Málaga. Parts of the range have been included in the Sierra Nevada National Park. The range has also been declared a biosphere reserve. The Sierra Nevada Observatory and the IRAM radiotelescope are located on the northern slopes at an elevation of 2,800 metres (9,200 ft). The Sierra Nevada was formed during the Alpine Orogeny, a mountain-building event that also formed the European Alps to the east and the Atlas Mountains of northern Africa across the Mediterranean Sea to the south. The Sierra as observed today formed during the Paleogene and Neogene Periods (66 to 1.8 million years ago) from the collision of the African and Eurasian continental plates. Central to the mountain range is a ridge running broadly west-south-west - east-north-east. For a substantial distance, the watershed stays consistently above 3,000 metres (9,800 ft). On the southern side of the range, several long, (but) narrow river valleys lead off towards the south-west, separated by a number of subsidiary ridges. On the steeper and craggier northern side, the valleys have less regular orientations. This side is dominated by the Rio Genil which starts near Mulhacén and into which many of the other rivers flow. According to the Köppen climate classification, Sierra Nevada has a mediterranean to subarctic climate (Dsc), due to the location's high elevation and low summer precipitation. With June and September being around the threshold of 10 °C (50 °F) in mean temperature to avoid the subarctic classification, the climate at a slightly lower elevation is continental highland climate. At an elevation slightly lower than that classification area; where February means average above −3 °C (27 °F); it falls into the normal cool-summer mediterranean classification transitioning with the hot-summer variety in surrounding lowland areas. This renders Sierra Nevada's climate a highland cooled-down variety of a typical mediterranean climate. Summer and winter daytime temperatures are some 12° C cooler than found in Granada, differences that are even greater in spring as Sierra Nevada takes longer to approach the short summers. In May daytime highs in Sierra Nevada are around 4 °C (39 °F) with Granada having an average of 24 °C (75 °F). The yearly temperature of 3.9 °C (39.0 °F) is in stark contrast to Granada's 15.7 °C (60.3 °F) and coastal Málaga's 18.5 °C (65.3 °F).
