Anza Borrego State Park Slot Canyon The Slot
The slot canyon is a beautiful natural formation nestled in the heart of the Anza Borrego State Park, about an hour and a half east of San Diego.
Simply named The Slot, this narrow siltstone canyon provides one of the most exciting hikes in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. This 0.8-mike trek is capped off with a passage beneath a gravity-defying rock span. This short hike has just 100 feet of elevation loss.

Slot Canyon Hike in Anza-Borrego Dessert | Hidden Treasure Near San Diego
We embarked on the Slot Canyon Hike near San Diego, California. It is officially known as the West Butte Borrego Mountain hike. It is actually located approximately 30 miles East of Julian. If you are going to Julian anyway, you could fit this short hike into your schedule - I don't know of any other slot canyon hikes near San Diego other than this one. If anyone knows of closer ones please post below (thank you).
Easy directions: From San Diego, head East on Hwy 78 about 30 miles east of Julian, and approximately 2 miles East of Borrego Springs Road from the 78. Eastbound on the 78, you will look out on your left side a small hard to see dirt road called Buttes Pass Rd. You will only see a small brown marker sign showing the name on the road if you heading Westbound on the 78. So be careful, and you really have to look. Take this road North bound approximately one mile to a fork. Take the LEFT fork (Borrego Wash) another approximate one mile to a dirt parking lot and park there. The trail head will be to your right (East) over a small hill - this is where we found it easiest to get down into the slot - turn left (West bound) down the slot path to the slot canyon.
Enjoy your hike!

Entire Slot Canyon Trail - Anza Borrego
GOpro video of the entire slot canyon trail at Anza Borrego national park. One of the few 2 wheel drive trails that were open during our trip.
The Slot - a super fun canyon to explore in the Anza Borrego Desert!
While Anza Borrego State Park is chock-full of interesting nooks and crannies, one of the best - and easiest places to explore in the Borrego Badlands is the slot a short canyon with sculpted sedimentary rock walls. This short hike is accessible to almost all parties who can walk a short mostly flat distance, after driving down a mostly maintained dirt road.

first aired in 2001 with coverage of the beginning events in the Extreme Rock Crawling Championships. We still have lots of that classic footage that we will be putting up just to bring a tear to your eyes for the good old days.
tested many factory four wheel drive vehicles during our early days and you can see the tests we did all categorized on our website.
projected several amazing vehicles including Elsie, our beloved FJ60 that was my family cruiser and remains in the shop to this day - and until the day they plant me in the ground. We also restored and period projected a very nice FJ40 that ended up in the hands of a friend, Bottle-a-day Dave. Anyone ever run across Dave Yarington (a rabid cruiser enthusiast - okay 'nut') please have him contact me. We also projected a great old Cherokee named Scofield (named after my friend who bought it new and explored many backroads in it). That Cherokee also still remains in my family, now driven by my son-in-law and most likely soon to be my Grandson's daily driver. Proof that good machines never die.
also went on some incredible adventures, certainly our favorite thing to do. We traveled a lot of cool trails around southern California as well as the infamous (in the ATV world!) Piute Trail area and of course Moab. What we love most are the scenic trails! You can find them all listed on our website as well.
had a few trail tips (which I hope to do more of), abad product reviews on both items for your rig as well as to make your trail experience better.
Hope to see you out on the trail.

A short drive from Blair Valley Campground where I was camping out. Definitely a must visit to see this interesting landscape. You have to drive on a dirt road to get to the trailhead of The Slot. The dirt road was well maintained when I was not. Any unmodified highway legal vehicle can go on the dirt road without problem
