Homer (Alaska) - In Another Minute (324)
- - Homer, Alaska, is a fishing village and tourist hot spot at the southern tip of the Kenai Peninsula. While it has only about 5,000 permanent residents, it has quite a few nicknames: Halibut Fishing Capital of the World and the cosmic hamlet by the sea and the end of the road.
The only road leading into town is Sterling Highway, aka Alaska Highway 1, which connects Homer with Anchorage, 225 miles to the north. Homer has been compared to Key West because of its similar setting of being at the end of a single highway and surrounded by water - you just have to dress a lot warmer in Alaska.
Last week, I got to discover this eclectic town when I was filming Tessa Drais and her family for my ongoing documentary project All's Well and Fair. I will remain forever grateful that she moved to such an enchanting place and gave Scott and me reason to visit and explore.
Homer, Alaska, was first established in 1898 as a settlement for gold miners by Homer Pennock. The miners remained unsuccessful, and the town quickly turned to fishing. Today, Homer is probably best known for halibut fishing, which tourists can participate in by choosing one of many day and half-day charters. Another option is fishing for salmon out in Kachemak Bay or along the rather unique Nick Dudiak Lagoon (aka the fishing hole). This man-made rectangle, off the bay on Homer Spit, was stocked years ago, and now draws the adult salmon back every year. It seems almost literally like shooting fish in a barrel - especially on the days when snagging is allowed. The seals also know how easy it is to grab a salmon off your hook. So watch out!
A lot of the footage was shot on and off Homer Spit, a gravel bar that extends from the main part of town into Kachemak Bay. This is where you will find the marina, the lagoon, restaurants like the excellent Little Mermaid, the famous Salty Dawg Saloon, shops on stilts, a boat graveyard, tons of RVs and tents, and the opportunity to watch bald eagles, sea otters and whales at play. While on Homer Spit, you can book fishing and sight-seeing tours and water taxi trips over to Halibut Cove, from where you can hike up to a glacier. We chose a ride-along on one of Mako's Water Taxis and got very lucky when Lance allowed us to stay on the boat for a second ride and then took us over to Seagull Island, where we saw all the breath-taking wildlife featured in the video Kenai Peninsula (Alaska) - In Another Minute (Week 232) and the whale featured in this video. Thank you again, Lance!
The Tardis, however, landed along East End Road on the mainland.
Homer has many Bed & Breakfasts. But if you're planning to visit in the summer, make sure you book early because they fill up quickly. The opening shot, I filmed from our private balcony at the Majestic View Bed & Breakfast, which also offered fantastic breakfast and a captain with a boat you can hire for whale-watching and fishing tours. For our last night, we managed to get the last available room in town at the Whalesong Bed & Breakfast. A place just as charming, but in walking distance to downtown restaurants, bars and the movie theater, instead of up on the hills with a view.
I shot the video in 4k on a Panasonic GH4 - except for the footage of the humpback whale, which Scott shot in 1080p on my beloved little Sony. Because my current computer isn't capable of editing 4k footage, this whole video is finished in 1080p. I'm still amazed how much better the down-converted 4k footage looks. If you'd like to see this and future videos in full 4k (or UHD to be more precise), please help me raise funds for the web series via its Patreon page: THANK YOU!
By the way, most of the footage from Homer Spit was shot between 10pm and midnight. During the day, it's still quite a lot brighter.

Homer, Alaska
Homer is a small but vibrant community towards the southwest end of the Kenai Peninsula of Alaska. Heading south from Anchorage for 350 km. on Route 1 (the Seward and Stirling Highways), the final approach to Homer suddenly offers a spectacular vista of Katchemak Bay backed by a panorama of blue mountains and icy-blue glaciers.
The main residential and commercial area of Homer clusters inland from Katchemak Bay, but the Homer Spit, a low-lying 7 km. long glacial moraine, extends out into the bay. On this narrow gravel bar, the harbor is home to commercial fishing boats, angling charter boats and a variety of pleasure craft. The Homer Spit also offers a range of seasonal shops, restaurants and charter fishing offices, as well as two popular campgrounds. As “the Halibut Capital of the World”, the port of Homer is famous for being the top commercial port for landing halibut. Charter boats also offer half and full day fishing trips for halibut and King salmon.
For an upland scenic view of Kachemak Bay, the drive along the Skyline Drive passes scattered homesteads all sited to capture the mountain views across the bay. Along the way, the Carl Wynn Nature Center offers a network of peaceful trails through forest areas as well as wild flower meadows.

Woolly Sculpin #4 Micro Fishing at Palos Verdes California - Species Fishing
This Woolly Sculpin (Clinocottus analis) was caught while micro fishing in Palos Verdes California. These sculpin are common in the upper tidal pools in this region and are easily caught on hook. Their woolly covering on the head and sides is made up of cirri and spines that add to their camouflage and aid in defense. Coloration among these fish is diverse. They can appear green, red and brown with the lighter colored fishes typically occupying the shallowest pools.
These sculpin are also capable of breathing air.

how to become an alaska bush pilot
How to Become an Alaska Bush Pilot.
To be employed as a pilot for any Alaska air taxi operator regulated by Federal Aviation Regulations Part 135 (almost all of them) you would need to have at least a commercial pilot single-engine-land license with an instrument rating. Most Alaska air taxi companies are authorized to fly under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) only, but most company policies dictate having an instrument rating. A single-engine seaplane rating is good, but unless you have a minimum of 200 hours on floats, you wouldn't be hired to fly float planes. There is a possible way around this 200 hour requirement, and that is to find a job with a company that operates on both wheels and floats. After flying the company wheel planes for a while and pretty much proving yourself in several ways i.e. good judgment, work ethic, winning personality, excellent customer relations, etc., and of course stick and rudder skills, they might start you flying floats on an insurance waiver until you have met the time required by their insurance company
Steps.
1. Log 500 hours of flight time. To fly as pilot-in-command under FARs Part 135 requires a minimum of 500 hours of flight time. Of that 500 hours, 100 hours has to be cross-country time. And of that 100 hours, 25 hours has to be night cross-country time.
How does the FAA define cross country time? The explanation below was originally posted by the Office of the Chief Counsel, FAA: Cross country flight time is defined as time acquired during a flight that includes a point of landing that is at least a straight-line distance of more than 50 nautical miles from the original point of departure, not the original point of any flight leg. There is no requirement that any specific leg must be 50 nm. Moreover, a cross-country flight may include several legs that are less than a straight-line distance of more than 50 nm from the original point of departure. Nevertheless, at least one leg of the cross-country flight, however long by itself, must include a point of landing that is at least a straight-line distance of more than 50 nm from the original point of departure.
In other words, each cross-country flight used to meet the aeronautical experience requirements under 14 CFR 61.1(b)(3) must include one leg that includes a landing that is at least a straight-line distance of more than 50 nm from the original point of departure.
2. Be aware that different companies have different requirements. The reality is that there are some Alaska operators who will hire a pilot with just the Part 135 minimums of 500 hours. But, most Alaska operators require 1000 hours or more in a new hire. Many of them also prefer to see some Alaska time or equivalent i.e. mountain time and/or Pacific Northwest time. For the most part, insurance companies are responsible for these pilot-employment requirements.
3. Build time by giving flight instruction. If you're a low-time commercial pilot and want to build flight hours toward an eventual Alaska flying job, the best way is to give flight instruction.
There are several flight schools in Alaska. A couple of them specialize in bush flying techniques. The others are geared toward gaining the desired licenses and ratings. With CFI or CFI-I certification, you could land a job with an Alaska flight school. This is a great way to build up some Alaska time. If you decide to acquire CFI or CFI-I certification from an Alaska-based flight school, there is the possibility that the school would hire you to give flight instruction.
Teaching at an Anchorage-based flight school might be the best route toward your getting a regular flying job. The reason being, that the Anchorage area has the biggest aviation community in the state and you would get to know people who would be in a position to help you find that job when you have logged enough flight time. You would also learn a bunch more than you already know by giving instruction. And as you got to know more fellow aviators, you might also learn a lot about which companies are really cool to work for and which ones may not be so cool.
