STORYLINE
Panasonic Corporation said on Wednesday it will slash 15-thousand jobs and shut down 27 plants worldwide to cope with plunging demand for its televisions, semiconductors and other electronics products.
Panasonic Finance Director Makoto Uenoyama said the cuts would happen roughly half overseas and half in Japan.
The world's largest maker of plasma display TVs also announced a net loss for the October-December quarter and lowered its forecast for the fiscal year through March to a net loss of 380 (b) billion yen (4.2 (b) billion US dollars), its first annual loss in six years.
Panasonic joins a slew of other major Japanese companies, including Sony Corporation and Toshiba Corporation, in announcing job cuts and forecasting a full-year loss as the global slowdown batters the world's second-largest economy.
The Osaka-based manufacturer plans to cut the jobs - half of which will come in Japan - by the end of March 2010. They amount to about five percent of its 300-thousand-strong global work force.
Panasonic also will shutter 14 overseas plants and 13 plants in Japan by the end of March to adjust production and cut costs, a company spokesman said.
Panasonic blamed the dismal earnings results on the global slowdown set off by the US financial crisis, the rapid surge of the yen and sudden price drops.
Sales slid in a wide range of products, including flat-panel TVs, DVD recorders, microwaves, lamps and semiconductors, it said.
Panasonic reported a 63.1 (b) billion yen (709 million US dollar) loss for the fiscal third quarter, down from a 115.2 (b) billion yen profit the same quarter the previous year.
Quarterly sales dropped 20 percent to 1.880 trillion yen from 2.345 trillion, with overseas sales decreasing 29 percent, and Japanese sales down 10 percent.
The last time Panasonic reported an annual loss was for the fiscal year ended March 2002, when a global electronics slump and massive restructuring costs contributed to 431 billion yen in red ink.
Since then, the company has been shedding money-losing businesses and focusing on key products such as plasma display TVs to turn itself around.
The company, formerly named Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., for its founder, also lowered its sales forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, to 7.75 trillion yen from an earlier 8.5 trillion yen.
Panasonic will delay by a half year starting production at two Japan plants - one for plasma panel TVs to July 2010, and another for liquid crystal display TVs until January 2010, in response to slipping demand for flat-panel TVs, it said.
The latest restructuring measures will cost an additional 190 (b) billion yen on top of the 155 (b) billion yen Panasonic has already announced for the fiscal year through March.
Rival Japanese manufacturer Sony is forecasting a 150 (b) billion yen net loss for the fiscal year through March.
The last and only time Sony reported a loss - the fiscal year ending March 1995 - the red ink came from one-time losses in its movie division, marred by box office flops and lax cost controls.
Hitachi Limited, NEC Corporation and Toshiba are also all forecasting big losses for the fiscal year.
Panasonic shares rose one percent to 1,092 yen. Earnings were announced after trading ended.

SONY UNDER ATTACK FROM HACKERS AND EX EMPLOYEES
The top theater chains in North America have dropped The Interview after hackers threatened terrorist attacks at theaters showing the comedy, effectively squashing the film's Christmas Day release.
As of Wednesday (17 DEC. 2014), Regal Cinemas, AMC Entertainment and Cinemark have each pulled the movie. The chains were also joined in postponing any screenings of The Interview by ArcLight Cinemas, Cineplex Entertainment and Carmike Cinemas, which pulled the film Tuesday.
Meantime, Sony Pictures Entertainment now faces two lawsuits from four former employees who claim the company did not do enough to prevent hackers from stealing nearly 50,000 social security numbers, salary details and other personal information from current and former workers.
The lawsuits seek to gain class-action status on behalf of those employees whose private data, including medical records, have been released by hackers in recent weeks.
Two employees sued Sony in federal court on Monday, alleging the company failed to secure its computer systems despite weaknesses that it has known about for years, and instead made a business decision to accept the risk. It contends that the latest data breaches are especially surprising and egregious because Sony Pictures has been repeatedly attacked over the years, including a 2011 hack that revealed millions of user accounts on Sony's PlayStation video-game network.
On Tuesday, two former movie production workers sued Sony in Los Angeles Superior Court, claiming the company waited too long to notify employees that their data had been stolen. The case filed by Susan Dukow and Yvonne Yaconelli alleges Sony violated California laws meant to protect sensitive financial and medical information.
Dukow worked on several Sony films between 1993 and 2004, including Jerry Maguire, ''Spider-Man and Charlie's Angels II. Yaconelli worked as a production manager on Sony films between 2001 and 2011 including Riding in Cars with Boys, ''The Green Hornet, and The Smurfs 3D. Both women worked on Spider-Man II, according to the lawsuit.
The repercussions of Sony's failure to implement and maintain reasonable security practices and procedures will likely damage plaintiffs and class members for the rest of their lives, Dukow and Yaconelli's lawsuit states.
A Sony representative declined comment on the lawsuits Tuesday afternoon.
Highly sensitive material from the entertainment unit of Tokyo-based Sony Corp. has been leaked almost daily since hackers broke into its computer networks last month. New threats and data leaks from the shadowy group calling itself Guardians of Peace, or GOP, were issued Tuesday.
The federal case filed Monday has two named plaintiffs: Michael Corona, a former Sony Entertainment employee who left the company in 2007 and now lives in Virginia, and Christina Mathis, who left the company in 2002 and lives in California. They allege their Social Security numbers and other sensitive personal information have been leaked, exposing them to identify theft for years to come.
Their lawyers allege that emails and other information leaked by the hackers show that Sony's information-technology department and its top lawyer believed its security system was vulnerable to attack, but that company did not act on those warnings. Corona and Mathis do not spell out how much they are seeking the case, but want actual damages and an order requiring Sony to pay for services to monitor credit and banking services and repair damage from identify theft for at least five years.

Our trip to Tokyo
【4K】Walking and flying in Tama city, Tokyo
Not a vlog, no intrusive faces or talking, pure Japan only.
I visited Tama city again. This time I found place allowed for drone flying. So I walked through green Tama city parks and houses among trees to countryside-like outskirts on the border with Machida city. Unfortunately the place I chose on the map was among trees and hills, I could fly far because of losing signal.

Tokyo city officials survey disputed islands in attempt to cement control
(2 Sep 2012) Tokyo city officials planning to buy tiny islands at the centre of a long-time territorial dispute with China surveyed the area on Sunday on a visit meant to send a message of ownership.
The boat, carrying 25 experts and officials as well as journalists from news organisations including The Associated Press, circled the five uninhabited islands in the East China Sea which are controlled by Japan but also claimed by China and Taiwan.
China responded quickly to the survey, saying any unilateral action by Japan on the islands is illegal and invalid.
Tokyo city officials say the survey is crucial and includes measuring the water depth to build a dock at the islands, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China.
Japan's central government did not grant permission to land on the islands.
Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara, a strong nationalist, has raised 1.45 billion (b) yen (19 million (m) US dollars) in private donations over the last several months to buy the islands from the Japanese family that owns them.
Supporters think having the government own the islands will strengthen Japan's control over them and send a tougher message to China.
Yoshihiko Yamada, a special adviser to the city's team, said Japan needs to send a message that we have full knowledge of the islands. If not, this international dispute over the islands will not be resolved.
The team was scheduled to study the islands for about 10 hours Sunday before heading back to Okinawa in south-western Japan.
The islands, a symbol of patriotic pride for some people in China and Japan, are near key sea lanes and are surrounded by rich fishing grounds and untapped natural resources.
China's Foreign Ministry said it had already made solemn representations to Japan about the visit.
Despite the squabbling over the islands, economic ties between China and Japan are growing.
Major Japanese manufacturers such as Nissan and Sony are eager to get a slice of the Chinese market, while ailing companies like Sharp. which makes flat panels for TVs, are seeking Chinese investment.
Japan therefore has much to gain by avoiding tensions with China.
Seiichiro Sakamaki, the leader of the Tokyo survey team, said he doesn't understand why the Chinese are making so much noise.
Partly it could be Governor Ishihara's provocative comments that are making the problems bigger, he said.
But the fact is the deal in buying the land is a domestic deal done in Japan, so I don't believe this issue should be any more emotional.
In terms of maritime security, this area has enough deep-sea level for submarines, Yamada also said. I can see how valuable these islands are for naval purposes.
Hundreds of Chinese have staged anti-Japan demonstrations in several cities over the island dispute.
Anti-Japanese sentiment runs deep in China because of bitter memories of atrocities committed by Japanese soldiers during World War II.
This past week in Beijing, a man ripped the Japanese flag off a car carrying Japan's ambassador to China.
Last month, Japan detained and later released 14 Hong Kong activists who landed on the islands.
Japanese activists have made similar trips.

Japan Trip: Yoshinoyama Kami Senbon Mikumari Shrine panoramic view, Nara47
Japan Trip: Yoshinoyama Kami Senbon Mikumari Shrine panoramic view, Nara47
Mount Yoshino (Yoshinoyama), located in Nara Prefecture, has been one of Japan's most famous cherry blossom viewing spots over many centuries. It is said that the first trees were planted more than 1300 years ago along its slopes, and today the mountain is covered by approximately 30,000 cherry trees of many different varieties, mainly of the Yamazakura variety.
Yoshinoyama is not quite a free standing mountain, but is a north-facing mountain slope. It is divided into four areas: the Shimo Senbon (lower 1000 trees) at the foot of the mountain, Naka Senbon (middle 1000 trees), Kami Senbon (upper 1000 trees) and Oku Senbon (inner 1000 trees) at the top of the mountain. Beauty of the cherry blossoms can be enjoyed as visitors ascend the mountain. They walk through Yoshino's touristy town with its various temples and shrines, and can enjoy hanami in the parks and viewpoints along the way. Further up the mountain, high in the Kami Senbon (upper) area, the crowds and the town begins to thin out. Kami Senbon seems slightly quieter than the lower parts of the mountain, and it offers several small parks, which provide pleasant places for taking a break. There is Hanayagura View Point, which affords the most famous panoramic view of Yoshinoyama. It is about one hour walk from the upper ropeway station.

Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
Santa Claus Is Coming To Town Song. Today my students were finishing their Tree Craft. This month we are reading the National Geographic Book Parts Of A Tree, which is part of the World Of Windows series. It's proving to be a wonderful book so far. During crafts I usually play their favourite songs. Recently we have been preparing for the Xmas event in December. Quite by chance it popped up as I was recording them. I must say, they have done me proud. A wonderful rendition of Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, yet still carefully using scissors to finish the assigned task.
