Top 10 tips for hiking 100 miles on the South Downs Way
What’s up YouTube, Russell Hepton here, welcome to The Trail Hunter and today I’ll be giving you my top 10 tips for hiking the full 100 miles of the South Downs Way!
Just a few weeks ago I decided to go on a 100 mile hike of the South Downs Way which stretches from Winchester through rolling hills of British countryside and along the south coast to Eastbourne which is just east of Brighton.
I decided to do this hike because of its long distance and relatively low elevation gain as I wanted to challenge myself in my mileage and see what I’m capable of.
I wanted to know what it’s like to actually go on a thru-hike from start to finish and be able to move slowly through a landscape, wild camping as I go without having to turn back.
I managed to finish the hike in just over 3 and a half days and also found out I’m capable of hiking over 30 miles in one day which was a huge step for me.
So here I just thought I’d put myself out there as a hiker who’s completed the South Downs and give you a few little gems of wisdom, so here it is, my top 10 tips that will ensure that you make it the full 100 miles on the South Downs Way!

South Downs Way Parham House Amberley Walks, South Downs Walks In West Sussex, Hiking In England, UK
South Downs Way, Parham House, Amberley Walks was about 7.75 miles in distance. The terrain of the route was a combination of field, woodland and hill paths and tracks; plus parkland drives and some short quiet country lane and road sections. The walking was mostly easy on level or undulating ground with gradual slopes except for one steep ascent. Route finding was easy with obvious paths, good waymarking and good landmarks. Some of the paths and tracks were a little muddy in places. There were 4 stiles to negotiate.

South Downs National Park with Europcar UK
Where are the South Downs? The South Downs National Park is England’s newest national park and covers 1600 sq. km from the cities of Winchester to Eastbourne on England’s south coast (check out the South Downs Way Map in the video).
We took our Europcar UK rental to the South Downs for a weekend road trip away from London - lots of fresh air and outdoor activities in a beautiful part of England that’s easy to get to from London. We stayed near the Eastbourne side of the South Downs - so a loop around Beachy Head, the Seven Sisters Cliffs and Country Park, Birling Gap and one of the prettiest towns in England as per The Telegraph - Alfriston.
Read more at
We hiked part of the South Downs walks with our kids and cycled parts of it, too - lots of easier paths so the whole family can participate. There are so many outdoor activities in the South Downs you can participate in.

Wild Camp Abandoned - Storm Deirdre | Devil's Dyke, South Downs Way | Camping in a Storm
On Saturday 15th December 2018, I joined forces with Tom Outdoors to complete a 10 mile hike and wild camp on the South Downs Way, starting at Devil's Dyke in Sussex. At the same time, Storm Deirdre was sweeping in across the country. Things didn't go completely to plan, in fact, it got borderline dangerous. Never underestimate British weather - or the usefulness of a cheap compass!
UPDATE 22.12.18: This video account does not reflect the severity of the weather on 15th December. Most of it could not be filmed due to the conditions. Even though this walk and camp were carried out in the south of England, as opposed to the Peak District or mountains of Scotland, the ridge of the South Downs is 200 metres up and very exposed to weather systems blowing in from the English Channel. I have learnt that even though in the south of England, you still have to be very careful when planning hikes and wild camps in certain areas.

SUMMARY
A lovely walk today and it was fabulous to share the adventure with Jason. We chatted, took photos, didn’t sit much, saw pigs, goats, cows and awesome views. A few sore legs/feet but all good!
