Lakeshore Beverage Presents: Speakeasy Ales & Lagers
Speakeasy Ales & Lagers' Brandon Borgel walks us through Big Daddy IPA, Prohibition Ale, Scarlett Red Rye Ale and Tallulah XPA.
The Brewery:
Speakeasy Ales & Lagers was founded in 1997 in San Francisco's Bayview District. Since that time it has grown to become a San Francisco landmark with their Big Daddy IPA, Prohibition Ale, and other amazingly balanced ales and lagers. At the core of the brewery is their original steam-fired brewhouse, designed for hands-on operation. Sometimes it takes two days of brewing to fill a fermenter, but that's a price Speakeasy is more than willing to pay for good beer.

Big Daddy IPA Beer Review From Speakeasy Ales and Lagers
Big Daddy IPA Beer Review From Speakeasy Ales and Lagers
A classic West Coast-style IPA, Big Daddy had led the masses since 1999 as our flagship IPA. Our heavy handed dry-hopping releases grassy, piney, and resinous aromatic notes while the subtleties of fresh bread linger in the background. Rich in body and bright gold in color, Big Daddy is generously hopped yet surprisingly drinkable.
Speakeasy Ales & Lagers has been defiantly brewing small batches of beer in San Francisco’s Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood since 1997. The brewery started with a single iconic beer, still made today, called Prohibition Ale. The hoppy amber beer embodies the spirit of bootleggers and gangsters who persevered when America’s taps ran dry.
The brewery quickly gained a loyal following with bold, complex beers, and striking 1920s imagery. In 1999, Big Daddy IPA was added to the lineup and became San Francisco’s best-selling IPA. The beer is still Speakeasy’s kingpin, representing 40% of the brewery’s sales, among a wide array of acclaimed beers, from session ales to bourbon barrel-aged imperial stouts.
During the early years, Speakeasy would open the brewery to family, friends, and beer lovers on legendary Friday nights. Fresh beer flowed from the cold box and live music filled the air. But as the brewery grew, the party space dwindled, and the Speakeasy Tap Room opened in 2013. It now serves thousands of thirsty followers, who can step back in time and relax with a beer, or dip into the medicine cabinet and grab a six-pack to go.
The brewery’s humble beginnings delivering hand-filled kegs out of the back of a van are long gone. Speakeasy now works with more than twenty distributors across the West Coast and throughout the United States. The brewery’s original fifteen barrel brewing system was also replaced in 2015 during a major expansion, which included a sixty barrel brewhouse, centrifuge, malt handling system, canning line, and an additional 1,200 barrels of fermentation capacity.
In 2017, the Speakeasy beer brands and brewing equipment were acquired by Hunters Point Brewery, a company founded by former beverage distributor, Ces Butner. Under new ownership Speakeasy Ales & Lagers will grow by leaps and bounds. The brewery’s trademark eyes, ubiquitous and cryptic, beckon you to join our mob, no password required.
Beer Review 151: Payback Porter - Speakeasy Ales & Lagers
Pours dark mohagany brown, nearly opaque, with light brown 1-finger creamy head. Definitely a porter aroma. Chocolate, dark roasted malts, and a hint of coffee or espresso. The chocolate is more of a dark cocoa powder and there is a hint of fruity yeast esters. Smells a lot like a rich brown ale. The taste starts with creamy roasty flavors in the mouth, followed by chocolate malts in the middle, then as it tapers off you pickup some of the roasted malts with the chocolate and a light bitterness from the malts A creamy texture and a full body that dries a little in the finish.

Zam Zam, San Francisco
For more ???? ????
Zam Zam's a quaint little bar in the Haight district of San Francisco. It's always reminded us of the inside of a genies bottle or ancient oil lamp. Rub Zam Zam three times and make your wish once the genie pops out! The atmosphere and ethereal artwork in this local bar are equally as good as the drinks they serve. Stop by and see for yourself!

Thrillist - Southern Pacific Brewing - San Francisco, CA
Opening tomorrow in what used to be a machine factory in the Mission, this gargantuan brewery 'n pub is part gritty urban warehouse, part beautiful German beer garden space, holding up to 200 revelers in an interior 'scaped with towering indoor trees sprouting from poured concrete floors, and a giant wall of windows, which you should steer clear of due to its tendency to crash.
Once inside, you'll choose either high-top, reclaimed-wooden communals on the main floor, or seating on the overlooking mezzanine, where you can enjoy modern American fare (like crab fritters with avocado chips or a wit beer-braised pork banh mi) from an Osteria Coppa-trained chef, virtually all of which'll be heavily infused with house beers, but not House beers, unless you want to get really Wilde.
A former Speakeasy wunderkind'll oversee the brew's birth in 15-barrel fermenters before it's served at a room-length bar with a corrugated tin roof and 20 different taps built into a steel I-beam. Six of em'll be pouring SPB's own liquid-blanketers which, to start, will include a pale ale, an IPA, a double IPA, a porter, a blonde, and a wit, potentially marking the last time you'll ever see blonde and wit in one place.
And in the coming weeks, SPB will expand its on-tap offerings to include a Belgian ale, a Chardonnay barrel-aged wit for SF Beer Week, and a Red, which, coincidentally, is also what you see when you're greeted with the Blue Screen of Death.

BrewBenefitTO 2013 presented by DishCrawl Toronto
Last Sunday, on April 7, 2013, we saw some fine weather here in Toronto and it was the perfect backdrop for our first ever Brew Benefit! Over 140 eager beer lovers descended upon the Esplanade and Front St area to explore local Ontario craft beers and sample some fabulous pairings at six hot spots in the area! A portion of the proceeds was in aid of The Stop Community Food Centre. The Stop works to increase access to healthy food for low-income people in the city's west end. They do so in variety of ways, including but not limited to, their drop-in meal program, food bank, community cooking and gardening programs.
Amsterdam Bicycle Club was the meeting hub where beer lovers were greeted with a map and drink tickets and to ensure their energy levels were high, they received some KIND Snacks as well. The delicious fruit and nut bars (especially the ones with chocolate) were gobbled up or stored away in back pockets for sustenance at a later hour. Armed with their treasures groups of old friends and new acquaintances set off to explore the area on a self guided beer crawl.
It's hard to say which route many took but at the end of the day, most were able to hit up all 6 spots in the span of three hours...or so we've heard! Some decided to enjoy the sunshine and laze around on the patios for a bit too long and then were busy playing catch up to ensure they got a sampling of each of the 12 fantastic brews on feature! We heard that many guests really enjoyed the $5 dishes on offer at certain spots!
Amsterdam Bicycle Club featured Amsterdam Brewery's Big Wheel and Boneshaker
along side some Popcorn shrimp and Nachos.
Scotland Yard featured Mill Street Brewery's Tank House Ale and Vanilla Porter which paired well with the Quebec style poutine and Scotland Yard's famous nachos
Great Burger Kitchen featured Beaus All Natural Brewing Company's Lug•Tread Lagered Ale and Beaver•River I.P.Eh. and ofcourse their famous beer braised chicken poutine.
Bier Markt featured Spearhead Brewing Company's Hawaiian Style Pale Ale and Belgian Stout alongside their Slow smoked BierBQ brisket. Fans were in for a treat because Dimitri van Kampen, President and Founder of the Spearhead Brewing Company was greeting Brew Benefit participants and sharing some secrets!
Berber Social featured Great Lakes Brewery's Crazy Canuck Pale Ale and Orange Peel Ale and there was no shortage of food choices here! Featured dishes included the Fingerling potato chips, Mac n cheese and Fish taco. This was a popular spot at the end of the Brew Benefit! We were thrilled that Berber Social opened especially for us on a Sunday!
Fionn MacCools featured Duggans Brewery's No.9 IPA and No.5 Sorachi Lager. Chris Duggan, one of the famous Duggans brothers, was there to ensure that fans were rewarded with some special t-shirts! Those were quite popular!
Everyone had a blast and many can't wait for the next Brew Benefit we hear! A big thanks to all the fantastic staff and owners at each of the 6 spots and our fantastic volunteers, we couldn't have done it with out you! A big thank you to everyone who came out to support Brew Benefit, our media partners and the delicious breweries on feature! We look forward to eating and drinking with you all very soon!!
Photos are posted on Facebook (great pictures by Chow Productions Inc!!) so feel free to tag yourself or follow us on Twitter for up to date information on our next event and promotions from our partner restaurants.
