Castlegate & Goodramgate
Castlegate
Castlegate was and is of course the street leading to the castle. There are two Georgian buildings of note in the street, both designed by the Yorkshire architect John Carr (1723-1807). One is Castlegate House, dating from 1759 and built for the City Recorder, Peter Johnson. The other building is Fairfax House dating from 1755. The latter house has a fine collection of Georgian furniture and other Georgian items known as the Terry Collection. A church has stood on the site of St Mary's Church in Castlegate since pre-conquest times, and although most of the present church is 12th-13th century there is a dedication stone in the building which dates to around 1020. The names Ervard, Grim and Aese are mentioned on the stone. St. Mary's became redundant as a church in 1958 but reopened in 1975 as the home of The York Story, a heritage centre which displays the history of the city in models and reconstructions and audio-visual displays.
Goodramgate York
Goodramgate was created in the Viking period, 1100 years ago as a street to connect the former eastern Roman gateway ( where Kings Square is today) with the former northern Roman gateway ( close to the current MonkBar gateway). Originally called Gutherumgate it was named after a local warrior, although some people believe it was after King Guthrum, who was defeated by King Arthur. Today Goodramgate is home to a variety of shops and businesses including pubs, restaurants, tea rooms, choclatiers, jewellers and York’s largest collection of charity shops.
The variety of the architecture on this street is amazing, spanning 700 years. Lady Row is the oldest row of houses in York dating back to 1316 and is one of the earliest examples in England of medieval “ jettied” houses, where the upper story jetties away from the lower portion. The houses were built for Holy Trinity Church which is situated behind them in a beautifully secluded site. Take a look inside the church and marvel at a building which has remained more or less unaltered since the 18th century. It has no gas or electricity or running water.

York Castle Museum - Forward To Victory | Digifish
York Castle Museum partnered with York Theatre Royal to produce this immersive theatre performance! We here at Digifish (digifish.tv) had the pleasure of filming the overview film.
Forward to Victory was a fantastic project which brought together the drama and energy of York Theatre Royal's Youth Theatre and the stories of the First World War collections of York Castle Museum.
This was all performed and filmed live in the arena of Kirkgate - the recreated Victorian streets at York Castle Museum. There were around 25 young people in each of the 3 performances - totalling 75 teenagers to manage!
The performance was well attended with an average audience of 65 people on each of the nights.
This partnership was also nominated as a finalist at the York Culture Awards earlier this month!

You can also take a stroll to the Millennium Bridge and stroll alongside the river and spot the wildlife.
St Michael's Church Opening
St Michael le Belfrey in York is a church that is open during the day. It is next to York Minster and is in York City centre so it attracts a lot of tourists. Visitors are welcome to look around. Guy Fawkes was baptised in St Mikes and David Watson was the vicar here. For these reasons and many others people come from all over the world to visit our church. 24,000 people visited the church in the summer of 2008. People sit and pray, walk around, receive God's peace and His presence, others chat, ask questions and light candles. Have you visited yet? Please do.

Caerphilly Library Official Opening 10th January 2014
The brand new facility boasts a range of must see features offering an enhanced Library and Customer Service Centre experience.
The building is prominently placed in the heart of Caerphilly town centre replacing the former Post Office. The impressive three storey facility has been sympathetically designed using the stone from the existing Post Office in order to compliment the architecture of the surrounding buildings.
Set against the spectacular backdrop of Caerphilly Castle, the building will be home to a number of services offering residents a one-stop shop style community facility. The Customer Service Centre will form part of the ground level and will offer an extended range of service for residents' ease of use.
The ground level will also be home to a grab and go style library section for customers who are short of time. The versatile space will offer a range of activities including adult reading groups, Welsh reading groups, IT and adult education classes, events and author visits, children's activities, customer services, payments and much more.
Cabinet Member for Education & Lifelong Learning Rhianon Passmore, said: I was fortunate enough to have visited the site on a number of occasions during the build to see the progress. It is an impressive facility which will offer a range of new and improved services.
She added, We have continued to invest in this valuable service in these austere times right across the Caerphilly county borough, this has ensured that we are able to offer our residents top quality services.
The top floor of the library, which offers the best view in the house, will also play host to a museum area for themed exhibitions from the Winding House, New Tredegar.
The Library will operate Monday to Friday between 9:30am to 6pm, closing at the slightly later time of 7pm on Wednesday, and Saturday 9:30am to 4pm.
The Customer Service provision will also be available from the 6th January opening Monday to Thursday 8:45am to 4:45pm, Friday 8:45am to 4:15pm and Saturday 9am to 1pm.
