Sermon St Johns Stone Church Anglican Sept 8th 2013
This was a sermon I did at Stone Church (a very prominent Evangelical Anglican church in Saint John). The Gospel read was a different one than what I had prepared, so I had to incorporate what I had prepared with what was being read. Since the Gospel is read just before the sermon is given, this gave me a bit of a panic, and I really had to make the changes on the fly. It added some to my nervousness at delivery time.

Saint John Cemetery
Saint John Cemetery is located in Saint Bernard, Ohio. The Roman Catholic burial ground was founded in 1849, during a raging cholera epidemic. Many of Cincinnati's other cemeteries were already full of the victims. Cininnati's oldest German families are buried in this cemetery and the old stones are written in German.

St. John's Cemetery
Established in 1788, Sandwich is Windsor’s most historic neighbourhood and has been the setting for many battles over the years. From the earliest Indigenous settlements to now, it has played a key role in shaping our local history. With veterans from as far back as the Seven Years War (1756-1763) buried at St. John’s Anglican Church, the cemetery serves as a who’s who of Sandwich Town’s past. There’s a significant amount of Canada’s military history buried at the corner of Brock and Sandwich Streets. Peter Berry of the Windsor Port Authority has been volunteering his time to not only research and identify all the veteran graves, but also to help maintain the churchyard so the history of the area can be preserved and appreciated, and our respects can be paid.

WHO WE ARE
We are a young parish of faithful whose mission is to love and honor God and to follow the example set for us by Jesus in the Holy Scripture – to be witnesses of His compassionate love for all people. It is important to us that we live our beliefs and that we share His message with others so that they may grow in their spiritual life and find salvation.
Since our parish was established in 2007, we have been holding Mass in a remodeled barn in northern Lake County, Illinois. In just under six years, our parish has grown and our temporary church in the barn is no longer adequate. So, with the support of our Archbishop, we have started to build a new church with the salvaged remains of two closed and deteriorating Chicago churches of classical and sacred architecture.
Our new church, which will express the majesty and dignity of the House of God, will be a spiritual home for all the people. Any and all are welcome. Whether you are a parishioner or a visitor, young or old, Catholic or from another faith tradition, your presence in our home strengthens our community. If you make our church your home or drop in as a guest, we will treat you with dignity and respect—your presence is our honor. We are building a home. It will be a traditional Catholic home, inclusive and welcoming, warm and inviting. It will have the look and the feel of a holy place of worship and prayer, a transcendent place that lifts us out of ourselves and into God’s presence. Our home will be a place of blended experience and contribution, a place that communicates the grace of the Catholic experience, the grandeur of architectural genius, the timeless magic of inspired art and the subtle, quiet glory of beautiful music.
We are building a testament to historic, architectural and cultural preservation. Our new church will integrate portions of two closed and deteriorating Chicago Catholic churches, St. John of God and St. Peter Canisius. We have reclaimed for the new St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church the limestone exterior of St. John of God, including its twin one hundred forty foot steeples, and the interior of St. Peter Canisius – solid oak pews, Italian marble statuary and altars, and museum-quality Tyrolean stained-glass windows. Even the wood, hardware and bells have been salvaged from these churches and will be re-used in our new church. St. Raphael will also house an invaluable historic organ, the 1915 Austin Pipe Organ No 558, from the city’s famed Medinah Temple.
Our predecessors left us a treasure trove of architectural, musical and spiritual creations which our new church will unify into a seamless, beautiful new creation. When completed, St. Raphael will be an example of an artistic renaissance of unique dimensions.
We are building a monument of faith on a foundation of the conviction, talent and generosity of our forebearers. The people who have gone before us, the parishioners and supporters of St. John of God and St Peter Canisius, transformed the stone, wood and glass of their spiritual homes into places endowed with the grace to fill hearts, change families, build communities and inspire the world. OUR STORY
St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church, is named for the travelers’ patron—a fitting name for a traveling church ready to settle down at last in Old Mill Creek, Illinois. But our new church represents more than just a change of location.
It represents renewal.
St. Raphael’s shows a way to preserve the vision of dreamers and builders who have come before us. This project is charged by faith, but we hope it also inspires beyond its religious scope. We believe St. Raphael’s can be a model of architectural preservation. There is wonder all around us, and there are ways to save it.
It represents optimism.
When a church closes its doors, you know a community’s at a crossroads. Once upon a time, the story of a closed building had only one possible ending: Destruction. Now it can be something else: A larger community using the inheritance left by another generation as a foundation for the future.
And it represents innovation.
This is an undertaking that could change the way we think about architectural preservation. We may be accustomed to visionary thinking coming from the world of business or the creative community, but sometimes it just comes from people whose hearts are in the right place. A familiar story—old meets new—but there’s nothing familiar about the ending. St. Raphael’s will be unlike anything that has come before it. What’s new is the idea.

Scottish Bluebells at St John's Episcopal Church Ballachulish
Please join me to see the wonderful wild Scottish bluebells in the church yard of St John's Episcopal church at Ballachulish.
We always look out for the bluebells here when we visit each May. Some years are dissapionting because there are hardly any flowers other years we are just too early to see them fully open ..... This year though was wonderful the entire area to the left of the church was carpeted in the beautiful bluebells.
Please note it is always important not to trample on or damage the flowers in any way . Please always stick to the paths or the edge of the area. That way the flowers can flourish and everyone can get to see them in all their glory !
I was saddened to see that some mindless person/s had created a large circle of damage among the bluebells and left behind their hooded top ! I would have moved the top but I did not want to create more damage by trying to reach it !
Other than the blubells this is also a very interesting and beautiful church & graveyard with many slate headstones ( Slate came from the Ballachulish quarry) all with different shapes and carvings.
These fine gravestones which, unlike many others, look as if they were engraved yesterday, having been made from Ballachulish slate. I hope you enjoy seeing the varied headstones , they range from traditional stone through to metal !
I have also added a few clips of the videos I still have to edit from our May Holiday in the Scottish Highlands, to give you and idea of what is to follow over the next weeks D

City of Joy | Tour of St. John's Church Kolkata 2019
St. John's Church, originally a cathedral, was among the first public buildings erected by the East India Company after Kolkata (Calcutta) became the effective capital of British India.[1] It is located at the North-Western corner of Raj Bhavan, and served as the Anglican Cathedral of Calcutta till 1847, when the see was transferred to St. Paul's Cathedral. Construction of the building, modelled on St Martin-in-the-Fields of London,[2] started in 1784, with Rs 30,000 raised through a public lottery,[3] and was completed in 1787. It is the third oldest church in the city, next to the Armenian and the Old Mission Church.[4]
The land for the St. John's Church was donated by the Maharaja Nabo Kishen Bahadur, the founder of the Shovabazar Raj Family. The foundation stone was laid by Warren Hastings, the Governor General of India on 6 April 1784. Two marble plaques at the entrance mark the two historic events.
Built by architect James Agg, the St John's church is built with a combination of brick and stone and was commonly known as the Pathure Girja[4] (Stone Church). Stone was a rare material in the late 18th century Kolkata. The stones came from the medieval ruins of Gour, and were shipped down the Hooghly River. The minutes book in the church office tell in detail the story of how the ruins of Gaur were robbed to build St John's church.[2]

The church is a large square structure in the Neoclassical architectural style. A stone spire 174 ft tall is its most distinctive feature. The spire holds a giant clock, which is wound every day.[3]
One of the driving forces behind the construction of the cathedral was Chaplain William Johnson, the husband of Begum Johnson.
Job Charnock Mausoleum
On 24 August 1690 an ambitious trader, Job Charnock, of the British East India Company landed in the village of Sutanuti (present day North Calcutta) never to return. Although Charnock died two years later, but he combined the three villages of Sutanuti, Govindopur & Kolikata to form the city of Calcutta.
The octagonal Moorish style tomb was erected by Charnock's son in law Charles Ayer. Built of stones brought all the way from Pallavaram near Chennai, which later came out to be known as Charnockite.[9]
The grave also contains the body of Charnock's wife and several other people, including the famous surgeon William Hamilton
The Epitaph of Charnok's grave is in latin. The English translation is: In the hands of God Almighty, Job Charnock, English knight and recently the most worthy agent of the English in this Kingdom of Bengal, left his mortal remains under this marble so that he might sleep in the hope of a blessed resurrection at the coming of Christ the Judge. After he had journeyed onto foreign soil he returned after a little while to his eternal home on the 10th day of January 1692. By his side lies Mary, first-born daughter of Job, and dearest wife of Charles Eyre, the English prefect in these parts. She died on 19 February AD 1696–7.[10]
