VATICANO - St. Peter's Basilica
Welcome to St. Peters Basilica - some hold it as the most beautiful edifice in the world.
Since its construction it has been the heart of Catholicism in the world and focal point of Papal liturgical activities.
The Basilica, dedicated to the prince of the Apostles, is one of the largest Churches in the world. It has the largest interior space of any church ever built.
But the first thing visitors see is the welcoming square, that embraces the masses…

ST PETER'S BASILICA INSIDE & CLIMB to CUPOLA - tour - VATICAN CITY - ROME
St Pteter’s Basilica tour guide:
DK Eyewitness Travel Guide: Rome:
St. Peter's Basilica located in the Vatican City Rome Italy, west of the Tiber River near the Janiculum Hill and Hadrian's Mausoleum. It's CUPOLA (dome) dominates the skyline of Rome. The basilica is approached via St. Peter's Square. It's Renaissance style facade of the basilica, with giant columns, stretches across the end of the square and is approached by steps on which stand two 18.2 ft statues of the 1st-century apostles to Rome, Saints Peter and Paul.
The basilica is cruciform shaped, with elongated nave in the Latin cross. The central space is dominated both externally and internally by one of the largest domes in the world. One of the decorated bronze doors leading from the narthex is the Holy Door, only opened during jubieles. The interior is of vast dimensions when compared with other churches. Only gradually does it dawn upon us – as we watch people draw near to this or that monument, strangely they appear to shrink; they are dwarfed by the scale of everything in the building. With piers supporting a barrel-vault, the highest of any church. The nave has a number of chapels. There are also chapels surrounding the dome around in a clockwise direction they are: The Baptistery, the Chapel of the Presentation of the Virgin, the larger Choir Chapel, the Clementine Chapel with the altar of Saint Gregory, the Sacristy Entrance, the left transept with altars to the Crucifixion of Saint Peter, Saint Joseph and Saint Thomas, the altar of Saint Peter, the apse with the Chair of Saint Peter, the altar of Saint Peter raising Tabitha, the altar of the Archangel Michael, the altar of the Navicella, the right transept with altars of Saint Erasmus, Saints Processo and Martiniano, and Saint Wenceslas, the altar of Saint Basil, the Gregorian Chapel with the altar of the Madonna of Succour, the larger Chapel of the Holy Sacrament, the Chapel of Saint Sebastian and the Chapel of the Pietà. At the heart of the basilica, beneath the high altar, is the Confessio or Chapel of the Confession, in reference to the confession of faith by St. Peter, which led to his martyrdom. Two curving marble staircases lead to this underground chapel at the level of the Constantinian church and immediately above the burial place of Saint Peter. The entire interior of St. Peter's is decorated with marble, reliefs, architectural sculpture and gilding. Contains a large number of tombs of popes and a number of sculptures in niches and chapels, including Michelangelo's Pietà. The central feature is a baldachino, or canopy over the Papal Altar, designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The sanctuary a sculptural ensemble, also by Bernini, and containing the symbolic Chair of Saint Peter. One observer wrote: St Peter's Basilica is the reason why Rome is still the center of the civilized world. For religious, historical, and architectural reasons it by itself justifies a journey to Rome..... The American philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson described St. Peter's as an ornament of the earth .... After the crucifixion of Jesus on Friday 7 April, AD 30, it is recorded in the Biblical book of the Acts of the Apostles that one of his twelve disciples, Simon known as Saint Peter, took a leadership position among Jesus' followers and was of great importance in the founding of the Christian Church. It is believed by a long tradition that Peter, after a ministry of thirty-four years, traveled to Rome and met his martyrdom there with Paul on 13 October, AD 64 during the reign of the Roman Emperor Nero. The execution was one of many martyrdom of Christians following the Great Fire of Rome. According to Origin, Peter was crucified head downwards, by his own request because he considered himself unworthy to die in the same manner as Jesus. The crucifixion took place near an ancient Egyptian obelisk in the Circus of Nero. The obelisk now stands in St. Peter's Square and revered as a witness to Peter's death. According to tradition, Peter's remains were buried outside the Circus, on the Mons Vaticanus across the Via Cornelia from the Circus, less than 490 ft from his place of death. Peter's grave was initially marked by a red rock, symbolic of his name. A shrine was built on this site some years later. Almost three hundred years later, Old St. Peter's Basilica was constructed over this site.

Pope Francis - St. Peter’s Basilica - Holy Mass of the Christmas Vigil 2018-12-24
From St. Peter’s Basilica, Holy Mass of the Christmas Vigil, presided by Pope Francis, for the solemn feast of the Birth of the Lord
Vatican City - St. Peter's Basilica HD (2015)
The Papal Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican, or simply St. Peter's Basilica (Latin: Basilica Sancti Petri; Italian: Basilica Papale di San Pietro in Vaticano), is a Late Renaissance church located within Vatican City.
Designed principally by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, St. Peter's is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture[2] and remains one of the two largest churches in the world.[3] While it is neither the mother church of the Catholic Church nor the Catholic Roman Rite cathedral of the Diocese of Rome, St. Peter's is regarded as one of the holiest Catholic shrines. It has been described as holding a unique position in the Christian world[4] and as the greatest of all churches of Christendom.[2][5]
By Catholic Tradition, the Basilica is the burial site of its namesake St. Peter, one of the Apostles of Jesus Christ and, also according to Tradition, the first Pope and Bishop of Rome. Tradition and strong historical evidence hold that St. Peter's tomb is directly below the high altar of the Basilica. For this reason, many Popes have been interred at St. Peter's since the Early Christian period. There has been a church on this site since the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great. Construction of the present basilica, replacing the Old St. Peter's Basilica of the 4th century AD, began on 18 April 1506 and was completed on 18 November 1626.[6]
St. Peter's is famous as a place of pilgrimage, for its liturgical functions. Because of its location in the Vatican, the Pope presides at a number of liturgies throughout the year, drawing audiences of 15,000 to over 80,000 people, either within the Basilica or its adjoining St. Peter's Square.[7] St. Peter's has many strong historical associations, with the Early Christian Church, the Papacy, the Protestant Reformation and Catholic Counter-reformation, and with numerous artists, most significantly Michelangelo. As a work of architecture, it is regarded as the greatest building of its age.[8] St. Peter's is one of the four churches of Rome that hold the rank of Major Basilica. Contrary to popular misconception, it is not a cathedral because it is not the seat of a bishop; the Cathedra of the Pope as Bishop of Rome is located in the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran.

360 Video: Inside the Tomb of St. Peter at the Vatican
Get ready to meet St. Peter.
Yahoo News was granted rare access to film inside the Vatican Grottos, a series of chapels and papal tombs located directly beneath the famous St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. In 360 degrees, the final resting places of popes dating back to the Middle Ages can be viewed on a virtual tour narrated by Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric.
Of the 266 Popes throughout history, approximately 100 of them are buried below the basilica. On the tour, viewers will see monuments to Pope Nicholas the Fifth, Pope Innocent the Seventh, and Pope Paul the Second, among others.
In an exclusive and stunning conclusion to the tour, Yahoo News filmed the tomb of St. Peter, the man Catholics call the “First Pope,” one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ. The remains of Peter are located directly beneath the altar where Pope Francis celebrates Mass, and create a literal foundation for the Church and its deep and storied history.

Rome Vlog: Pantheon, Colosseum, Vatican City Museum, St. Peter's Basilica!

May 19, 2015
Our second day in Rome started with a 6:30 am jog from our AirBnB apartment in Trastevere to the Pantheon. We were overwhelmed by the number of tourists we encountered on our first day in beautiful Rome, so we thought we'd try to see a site or two bright and early when we rightly assumed that everyone else would be sleeping. ;)
We think an early morning walk or jog is the best way to see the city! There's little traffic and even fewer tourists. We had both the Pantheon and Piazza Navona pretty much to ourselves! The only downside of course is that it was too early to go inside the Pantheon.
We spent the rest of the day visiting the Colosseum and Vatican. We highly recommend purchasing your tickets online! That way you can avoid long lines, especially at the Colosseum. For the Vatican City Museum, you can purchase a voucher online and exchange it for a ticket at the Museum.
To our dismay both the Colosseum and Forum were closed - without prior notification - until 11:30 am due to an official government-sponsored event. Fortunately, much of the Forum is visible from the public sidewalks. In addition, there are several other spectacular monuments all within walking distance of the Colosseum and Forum including Trajan's Column and the Vittorio Emmanuel II Monument. We also took this opportunity to walk back to the Pantheon and go inside.
The Vatican City Museum is a treasure trove of art! Because of our delays getting into the Colosseum, we sadly had to rush through the Museum. But what we saw was breathtaking! It was also amazing to see the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in-person!
From the Museum, it's a short five or so minute walk to the Vatican City where we headed straight to St. Peter's Basilica. We arrived around 5:15 pm, and the light inside the Basilica was stunning! We paid 7 Euro per person to take the elevator + 320 steps to the Dome. The alternative is to pay 5 Euro per person to ascend completely on foot via 551 steps. The 360-degree views of Rome from the Dome are gorgeous!
We enjoyed a simple pasta dinner followed by our daily serving of gelato! We ended the day with a walk along the Tiber River back to our place in Trastevere. The monuments and bridges around the river are beautifully lit up at night!
As always, many thanks for watching!!
