A tobacco plantation in the Vinales Valley, Cuba
We visited a tobacco plantation in the Vinales Valley. The farmer told us about the process and showed us how he rolled a cigar. Then we got coffee and could we buy cigars.

Cuba was such a unique experience. It was like taking a step back through time and nothing we could have prepared for. Follow our backpacking adventure as we travel from Havana to Vinales in this video and explore some of the nature in the Vinales valley.
Cuba Travels: Havana & Vinales - DJI Phantom Drone GoPro
Someone once asked us Is Cuba really that colorful or is everyone just using the same Instagram filter? -- Let me tell you, Cuba is really THAT colorful!
With the recent change in relationship between the USA and Cuba, we decide to move this little island up on our travel bucket list in hopes that we could still experience that nostalgic untouched place before it was infiltrated by the Starbuck's and Hilton's of the world. The pictures from Cuba always look vintage no matter what year they are taken in, so setting foot and wandering around these vintage streets in real life was most definitely surreal.
We opted for an AirBnb in Vedado as our home-base, the reason being that it would give us a good reason to explore more than the timeworn city center that is Old Havana, and it did!

Here is a rundown of our week in Cuba:
- Vedado (homebase): is 10mins east of Old Havana. We found a private little apartment via AirBnb that was/is ran by a lovely family that made us breakfast every morning. The hospitality in Cuba is unparalleled. Eat at: New George, located at 3rd between A and B, around the corner from the the big Melia Cohiba hotel.
- Old Havana:
The best way to see Old Havana when you first arrive is via a bike tour for $5 an hour. Walk down Obispo (one of the main roads), visit the Cathedral, check out the old cars outside of Hotel Inglaterra and visit “Almacenes San José” Market located on the port for all sorts of cuban souvenirs.
Where to eat: El Chanchulero. But otherwise, avoid restaurants with big flashy signs. You will get the most authentic meals at “Casa Particulares” aka private homes. Ask a local for a recommendation.
- Beaches:
Playas del Este (Beaches of the East) is composed by a string of 6 white sand and turquoise water beaches. Hop on a bus across the street from Hotel Inglaterra, $10/pp will get you a round trip ticket to this paradise. The ride is aprox 30 mins from Old Havana and leaves every 30 mins.
Where to eat: Get off at the “Mar Azul” beach stop. There is a BBQ stand between the beach and Hotel Tropicoco that sells ridiculously good fried chicken and pork loin. Walk down to Guanabo beach for a killer $1 piña colada (little shack on the street side).
- Nightlife:
We tried to experience Fabrica de las Artes but unfortunately it happened to be under a remodel phase while we were there. Luckily it also leads us to a place called Club 1830 right around the corner. Filler with locals showcasing the craziest salsa moves. Truly incredible.
Hope you enjoy the video!

Hike Vinales National Park, Cuba, Video Details
In this video we hike in the Vinales National Park. Located within walking distance from the rural village Vinales. The park contains strange mountains. Sorry, but no beaches.
We start the hike from our homestay (or Casa Particular). Where we paid $25 per night, breakfast included.
Vinales is a one-horse town. One main road. One sewing factory. A handful of shops and restaurants. And lots of oxen.
The turn-off to the park is marked by the world famous Prehistoric Wall Painting sign. It is NOT a prehistoric painting. It is a painting about prehistoric times.
The locals are poor and have interesting ways of getting money from passing tourists. This farmer asked us inside to help him with an email address. Who can turn down a tech support request? Once inside the sales pitch began.
Note that the government takes 75% of local crops, the rest the locals to sell independently.
There were no official park signs so we just followed foot trails that went up the nearest mountain. And like in Nepal, we found a chi shop along the trail.
We get a drink better than Nepali chi. After that mojito Cristina, didn’t feel like hiking any more.
At the bottom of the mountain I found a ride. The ride back to town cost us 2 dollars.

Cuba 2019 - Havana, Viñales, Playa de Santa María
All I have to say is... W.O.W. This country was by far one of the most beautiful and most eye-opening for me. The people are beyond nice (sometimes a little too nice AKA lots of cat-calling), the vintage cars are super fun and it's true what they say - ALCOHOL IS CHEAP AND STRONG!
Though we enjoyed the hustle and bustle of Havana, we really much appreciated our three hour taxi ride (approx. $120) to Viñales and our 25 minute, $5 bus ride to Playa de Santa María.
The mountains and fresh air in the quaint city of Viñales was definitely worth the trip! We wish we planned to stay more days here! As part of the ride, our taxi driver took us to Casa Manolo, a tobacco farm where many other taxis stopped with tourists. Here, we were able to rent a horseback ride, stop at a rum, coffee and honey farm and rode down to a lake where we had lunch. Great, GREAT experience!!!
BUT OK THE BEACH!!!! Looking over all the footage I got, it seemed like it just wasn't a good day to film probably because I was way too overwhelmed with excitement. Next time though, we want to schedule time to visit Varadero (highly recommended beach city). Thoughts?
Food - OK. We really enjoyed Venami Pastas y Pizzas and Don PP.
Drinks - The daiquiris at Floridita were THEE BEST, but about $3 more than normal (normal is about $3). The mojitos (from anywhere) were really good too!
Weather - Between January 8 - 17, the weather was UH-MAZING! About mid-70's the whole entire time.
Transportation - If it’s obvious that you're a tourist, taxi drivers will *TRY TO* inflate the price tremendously. Tell/show them where you want to go and then ALWAYS ask how much. We were never ever able to bargain for anything less than $5 (also because we were club hopping and it was only about 0.7 miles away). ALSO - as first-time Havana visitors, we were bombarded immediately as soon as we got out of the airport and didn't know what to expect. Long story short - say NO to the first-third taxi driver that approaches you. Taxi rides to the city from the airport are only supposed to be around $25-$30... The guy charged us $60 total *sad face*.
Bathrooms - No flushing and/or no toilet paper at most places. Bring wipes with you! They help.
Overall - highly recommend!

Ever watched a video wondering:
who is that guy? :D
Well, I'm a freaking old student (28 years omg can't believe it :D) from Germany (you probably were wondering by now where is this weird accent coming from haha).
I hustled my way up from being an unmotivated pupil that ended up working at a super shitty job for couple of years (something like the German Walmart ... still feeling the pain lol) to being very fucking fortunate student ... who somehow convinced one of the best universities in Germany to accept him and the government to give him an extreme rare scholarship.
That blessing made it possible for him to have enough time & money to travel and ... most important having time to do what I love most: creating videos for you guys.
After finishing all this studies I'm dreaming about doing this full time and hopefully having enough food to do that at that point would be cool haha :) sorry for the rambling, but its straight from my heart (how cliché ugh, but true) :)
Thank you, amazing person, for reading and caring!

Traveling Cuba - Havana and Viñales Valley (Itinerary and Tips for U.S. Citizens Included)
Alex and I went on an incredible honeymoon to Cuba, visiting Havana and Viñales Valley. We highly recommend you visit! Yes, even citizens of the United States. We spent 6 days traveling in October of 2017. The trip was not easy to plan but here are a few tips as well as our itinerary.
Havana (4 nights)
Lodging - First off, you’ll want to stay in the old colonial area of Habana Vieja. We found Havana to be very walkable - and at all hours Stay away from large hotels, especially if they are government-run hotels like Hotel Nacional. They are interesting to visit but using Airbnb.com to stay in casas particulares is what you need to do. The hosts running a casa particular will spoil you with hospitality and share local recommendations, arrange rides and tours, set dinner reservations, and make you breakfast. There are thousands of Airbnb listings in Cuba. I found this one through a friend and I couldn’t recommend it more.
Havana Airbnb -
Havana Food:
TripAdvisor.com is a great source for trendy and institutional restaurants in Havana.
Here is our Do Not Miss List:
Dinner - San Cristobal Paladar, Esto No Es Un Café, La Guarida, O'Reilly 304
Drinks - La Bodeguita Del Medio, El Floridita, and Hotel Ambos
Havana Shopping:
Do not miss San José Market. Shopping on Obispo Street and Mercaderes Street is also productive and open until late at night. You’ll want to bargain.
Havana Sights:
The classic car tour is the best way to see the city on Day One. Definitely check these out from the street and spend the next few days exploring in-depth:
Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes
Museo de la Revolución - must see!
Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro (Morro Castle)
Plaza De Catedral, Armas, Vieja, and Revolución are all amazing
Obispo walking street
Transportation from Havana to Viñales
On our way to Viñales, we hired a 1950s classic car but soon realized it was the wrong choice. The ride was bumpy, seats uncomfortable, and three hours later we were basically asphyxiated by the exhaust! So… take the bus.
Omnibus Viazul (From Havana at 9:00 AM & 2:30 PM; From Viñales at 8:00 AM & 2:00 PM)
Viñales Valley (2 nights)
Lodging - I feel like the entire city is Airbnb lodging - it’s very difficult to choose because ratings are all very good. We chose to stay outside of the city, 3 km from the city center. This was very peaceful and a better cultural experience. Once you are in the city, rent a scooter or bikes so you can get around. Below is where you want to stay:
Viñales Airbnb:
Bike or scooter rental in the driveway at La Casa De Don Tomas for ~$20 a day.
Viñales Food:
Breakfast at the Airbnb every day is solid.
Finca Agroecologica El Paraiso - cannot miss. This is an organic farm with incredible views and a stress reduction drink.
Restaurante El Cuajani - Also cannot miss. The owners are incredible people and the food is made with love.
Buena Vista Bar Mario Sergio - this is close to the Airbnb. Home of the BEST MOJITO IN THE WORLD, which, in Cuba, says a lot! Mario, the owner, is in the video serving us.
El Olive - excellent Italian.
Sights
Take a horseback tour of the valley and visit cigar plantations and coffee plantations.
Horseback tour: Caballos Del Valle de Viñales - excursionvinales.es or emailbruniesky@nauta.cu
Cueva Del Indio is the cave tour in the video. It’s short but worth it if you have time.
Other Helpful Tips When Planning For Your Trip:
Get your visa ahead of time from cubatravelservices.com which was linked directly from the American Airlines website where we bought our flights.
Get an Educational Activities Visa (#5) and keep your itinerary and museum/tour receipts if needed at customs
Get a certificate of authentication when you buy art
Exchange money at banks or hotels and bring Euros or CAN into Cuba (There is 10% fee for exchanging USD on top of the traditional exchange fees)
Everything costs about the same as a vacation in the U.S.
You’ll need your passport for hotels and rentals.
Be careful of overly friendly people who come out of nowhere (don’t go to “the last day of the Cigar Festival”)
Most cigars you buy on the streets are fake - even if they say their brother works at the factory. I have heard mixed information on this but I would recommend buying from a restaurant/bar, La Casa Del Habano store, or at the plantations in Viñales.
Have a great trip!

The Story of Viñales Cuba AUG 2018
Viñales is a town in western Cuba. Its main street is lined with colorful colonial-era wooden houses, including the Municipal Museum, which explores the region’s history. Orchids and palms fill the sprawling Casa de Caridad Botanical Gardens. Viñales serves as a gateway to the Sierra de los Organos mountains and the Viñales Valley. The valley's tall, steep-sided limestone hills, known as mogotes, draw rock climbers.
