Union Pacific Train Depot Cheyenne Wyoming
The City of Cheyenne, first surveyed by General Grenville Dodge, had its beginning in 1867. See video of map of original city bounds.
Union Pacific Depot - Cheyenne Wyoming - Listed as a National Historic Landmark
The Cheyenne Depot was built in 1886-1887 and is one of the most beautiful railroad stations in North America. The 3-story depot is made from polychromatic sandstone quarried near Fort Collins, Colorado. In 1922, major renovations extended the structure to its present 331-foot length. In 1929, the interior was modernized to reflect the then current art deco style.
The Depot faces the Capitol (about 10 blocks North). See my other videos.
Cheyenne Street Railway - Offers narrated history tours on a Trolley.
Boot Sculptures - Fundraising project, These Boots are Made for Talking, for the Depot Foundation. Made by local artists, there are 26 eight-foot-tall cowboy boots scattered throughout Cheyenne.
There are numerous historical buildings nearby including: the Albany Restaurant Bar, the Wrangler, Grier Furniture, Plains Hotel, and the Lincoln and Atlas Theatres. See my other videos for more information.

Whitcomb 65 Tonner Diesel Locomotive #9 in Operation
After months of cleaning, troubleshooting, repairing and replacing of parts, this Whitcomb diesel at the Trolley Museum of New York in Kingston, NY made its first moves along the rails on November 21, 2015. It is currently the only Whitcomb 65 Tonner Diesel in the state of New York.
The diesel, former South Brooklyn Railway #9, ran under its own power after several years of inactivity. While the diesel locomotive only moved just a few feet in both directions, this proved to be a huge milestone for all volunteers and for the museum.

The Worlds Most Crooked Railroad - The Uintah Railway
Ghost tracking the amazing Uintah Railway, From Mack Colorado over Baxter Pass. We are back riding the California Zephyr to Grand Junction, with a side trip in search of the elusive yet amazing Uintah Railway, over the Book Cliffs in search of spikes and other rusty metal as we explore the abandoned grade. Also a quick trip to Cross Orchards which is home to a great collection of old Uintah rolling stock.
********************************************************************
From Wikipedia:
The railway company was founded in 1903 as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Gilson Asphaltum Company. Construction began at a connection with the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad at what became known as Mack, Colorado. Twenty-eight miles of track was laid following West Salt Wash Creek upstream to the company town of Atchee, Colorado, named after a chief of the Ute people. Atchee served as a division point with maintenance shops for railway equipment. From Atchee, six miles of 7.5 percent grade were required to climb the Book Cliffs to Baxter Pass at an elevation of 8,437 feet (2,572 m). From the summit of Baxter Pass, there were seven miles of 5 percent downhill grade to Wendella, Colorado, followed by twelve miles of 3 percent or shallower grades down Evacuation Creek to the Black Dragon Mine just west of the Utah border. The Black Dragon Vein of Gilsonite was exposed across the ground surface for a distance of 4 miles (6.4 km), and averaged 6 feet (1.8 m) wide for half of that distance. Trains began hauling Gilsonite from the Black Dragon Mine in October, 1904. Shay locomotives pulled freight trains over Baxter Pass between the Dragon Mine and Atchee, and 2-8-0 engines pulled the freight trains between Atchee and Mack.
*****************************************************************
Ten miles of track were laid in 1911 on a one percent grade down Evacuation Creek from Dragon, Utah, to the Rainbow Mine near Watson, Utah. A new 2-8-2 locomotive was built to pull freight trains between Watson and Wendella. The new locomotive was more efficient than Shay locomotives on that section of track, but it could not negotiate the steep grades and sharp curves over Baxter Pass between Wendella and Atchee. The railroad had operated passenger trains since 1905 consisting of a 0-6-2 tank locomotive pulling a single combine car between Mack and Dragon or Watson. This passenger train service was discontinued in 1921
For much of the 1920s the Uintah was headed by Lucian Sprague, a railroad executive who later became well known for orchestrating the dramatic turnaround of the bankrupt Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway.[6] In 1926 the railroad purchased an articulated locomotive, #50, which was specifically designed to handle the extreme curvature and steep grades of Baxter Pass. The idea was that this new locomotive would do away with the need to change engines at Atchee and Wendella. The single articulated locomotive could move as many cars as two Shay locomotives from Rainbow to Atchee, and made the trip in half the time. After some initial modifications, this engine proved to be such a success that in 1928 the railroad purchased a sister locomotive, #51. These were the only narrow gauge simple articulated locomotives sold for use in the United States.
****************************************************************
The railroad lasted until 1939 when trucks took over hauling the Gilsonite. At that time, the rails were pulled up and the towns abandoned. Most of the railway's locomotives were scrapped immediately; the two famous articulateds were sold to the Sumpter Valley Railway in Oregon, and later went to Guatemala, where they were dismantled. Today all that remains of the Uintah are the cellar pits of some of the buildings, the shell of the machine shop in Atchee, a few pieces of rolling stock, and part of the company hotel in Mack

Union Pacific, BNSF, and farewell to an old friend...
Filmed 08/16/15
This is more from the Sunday Chris, Shane and I got the two Amtrak heritage units at Kansas City's Union Station. After leaving there, we headed over to the Kansas side where we then got that UP generator train. Then we headed back east to BNSF's Marceline Sub just west of the Eton junction Atherton, MO.
It had been a long morning, so we didn't stay too long here, but we did get a few trains and were able to put my old camera to rest. It took a fatal fall on a railfan outing with Shane up near Waldron, MO on August 7th. So, we decided the next time all three of us got together, we'd give the old camera a proper send off. So watch to the end of the video to see it.
Not saying exactly how the camera ended up in that condition, but it was pretty mangled to pieces... some things that happen in Eton, stay in Eton. But, Shane brought his trombone and played TAPS and Chris as the one who ... well, finished it off. :D
Thanks for watching!

Behind the Scenes at Knotts Berry Farm Railroad
Todays movie Knott only answers the question can you name seven kinds of berries?, it tells the amazing story of Knott's Berry Farm and the Ghost Town Railroad. Walter Knott loved screwing around to such an extent, he built his own Ghost Town on his farm. Yes, yes, it was part of his restaurant and tearoom, to entertain people waiting in line, and yes to separate them from a few unneeded coins in the process, but heck, the real goal was to build something fun. Before undertaking the ghost town, he built a volcano that erupted on command with a little devil running the controls. So, proof, screwing around first and foremost!

Atlantic Dream Day 10, 11 and 12
Train Operator Likely Caused Chicago Derailment
PlusTrain Operator Likely Caused Chicago DerailmentTrain Operator Likely Caused Chicago DerailmentThe Associated PressA Chicago transit spokeswoman says a train derailment was probably caused by operator error. Fourteen people were taken to hospitals after the elevated train left the tracks. THEY'RE ALSO LOOKING INTO THE POSSIBILITY THAT AGING SIGNALS MAY HAVE PLAYED A ROLE IN THE ACCIDENT. Iron Goat Trail 071011.wmv
On July 11, 2011, we did the hike on the Iron Goat Trail from the trailhead at Scenic, WA just before US 2 starts up the west side of Stevens Pass. We did the 1 mile switch back trail to Windy Point, the site of the old curved double track tunnel, where I took the pictures looking down at a BNSF empty coal train entering the west portal of the 'New' (1929) 7.8 mile long Cascade Tunnel. Many of these photos of this trail show how over the last 80+ years that nature is reclaiming it's ground. The sign posts with numbers were where the old mileposts were - indicating the Great Northern RR distance then from St. Paul, MN. In the scene with the small snow crossing is a very slide prone area, both looking up and down slope. Much of this 3 mile hike along the old right-of-way has a tall concrete wall along the way, where there were wooden snowsheds. The 1/2 mile long double track concrete snowshed is where the 1910 'Wellington Disaster' occured, and the flat area (now upper trailhead) is the former Wellington (or Tye, as it was renamed after the disaster) townsite, that was abandoned after the 'new' tunnel was opened. Finally, the west portal of the 'Old' 2.6 mile long Cascade Tunnel, closed to the public. This a fairly easy hike, with good historical value and plenty of nature scenery! HH
