Mt Doom Trek - Tongariro Alpine Crossing (Tongariro National Park)
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of those must walks of New Zealand. However being New Zealand most winter visitors miss the chance of doing it, because of weather conditions on the mountains. We nearly were one of those visitors who never got a chance to do the crossing. But on my last full day and one of my friend Lucy's last days, the rain cleared and the crossing was open. So on the morning 30th, September we were picked up early from our hostel and dropped at Mangatepopo Carpark, at the start of the Alpine Crossing. The crop was also the film set of Mt Doom from the Lord of the Rings films and Mt Ngauruhoe is nicknamed as Mt Doom.
The crossing is a one way 19.4km trek across the alpine pass of Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngaurahoe. The Department of Conservation class the walk as an advanced trek and recommended between 5hr and 30mins to 7hr 30mins. It took us 6 hours to complete the crossing.
So the route starts at the Mangatepopo Carpark and heads towards Mt Ngaurahoe along the Mangatepopo valley. The first section to the devils staircase is fairly flat, with a small incline. The path is well marked out in the valley and includes a couple of boardwalks. Along with this section, you can see all three of the largest peaks in the national park, Mt Ruapehu, Mt Ngaurahoe and Mt Tongariro. You can also see the glacial landscape that formed the valley and the lava flows that have filled it. Then finally before you start the devils staircase you can see and smell the soda springs. Next head up the step Devils Staircase to the top of the South Crater. Once you arrive at the top, you are able to look back down onto the Mangatepopo Valley and see the signpost for the path to the summit of Mt Ngaurahoe.
The next section has you crossing the South Crater and heading up the ridge towards the summit of the Red Crater. The ridge climb to the top of the Red Crater was steep and the ground was loose. But once you arrive at the top of the Red Crater you have a fantastic view, looking back down towards South Crater, Mt Ngaurahoe and Mangatepopo Valley. Here you can head left to the summit of Mt Tongariro. Continuing along the alpine crossing, you will up onto the highest point of the Red Crater's rim and then back down to the Central Crater and Emerald Lakes. Going down the ground is extremely loose and has you sliding down for part of the way. The Emerald lakes are beautiful clear blue water filled craters or when we crossed mostly iced covered pools. At the bottom of the Central Crater, you also meet by another junction to the Oturere Hut and the Tongariro Northern Circuit. But here, continue straight ahead toward the Blue Lake and Ketetahi Carpark.
The next section heads across the Central Crater which for us was covered in 4 feet of snow/ice which was a bit different. Then the path heads up for the final climb to the Blue Lake. Again for us, it was covered in ice. Next couple of hours has you heading down off the mountain, with beautiful views of the lakes around Mt Tongariro. So you can see Lake Rotoaira and behind that lake, New Zealand's largest lake, Taupo. Also, you see Te Maari Craters and Ketetahi Springs and about half way, Ketetahi hut which is used as a toilet stop and shelter if the weather turns, but I would not fancy staying there as the roof full of holes from past eruption's falling debris. The last section of the route is easy and before you know it you're into the forest below and back at the car park, where we were picked up for us to be returned to our hostel.
Also remember to take the correct equipment and be prepared for the worst. Upon the mountain, the weather conditions can change quickly and not be forecasted. So always only do what you can and what you're prepared for. For the winter season, the crossing can only be done with guides. When we did the crossing the Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngaurahoe summit were closed because there was still to much ice and snow on the mountains. So look up the currently information and warnings. The best place is to visit the Department of Conservation website:
Also to use a shuttle bus like we did or one of the guided walks. We used Tongariro Expeditions to pick us up from our Taupo accommodation:

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Alpine Tramping (Hiking) Series | New Zealand
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of the most incredible day walks in the world. Although beautiful, it can be dangerous if you are not fully prepared to enter an alpine environment. Extreme weather, terrain and distance have resulted in this track having the highest number of search and rescues for trampers in New Zealand. This video takes you through the entire track and shows you how to prepare for a successful day out so that you make it home safely.

Tongariro Alpine Crossing - Travel New Zealand - Tongariro National Park, North Island
Along with a big group of international students from Victoria University we completed one of the most famous walks in New Zealand, The Tongariro Crossing. A small group of us detoured up to the Tongariro Summit and were rewarded with wine by a couple of cheerful tourists. The detour to the summit of Ngauruhoe is no longer advertised due to it being overused and disrespected in the past. Make sure you have your transportation planned (there and back) as parking rules have recently changed! Look out for the forecast as people have been known to get caught in bad weather up on the ridges here. For more information look on the DOC website:

Mount Ngauruhoe Summit Hike - Tongariro Alpine Crossing - January 2014
When you have the opportunity to summit a mountain as rugged, beautiful, and famous as Mount Doom, you take it. Even if you missed the early shuttle to Tongariro and they say that you won't have time for the summit side trail if you want to catch the last shuttle back to town.
Alpine Crossing in Tongariro National Park
A daytrip to Tongariro National Park to do what is perhaps the best day hike in all of New Zealand. I was base in Lake Taupo, which is about 1 hour away from the national park Due to volcanic activity in the area, there is a new alpine crossing which takes 6-8 hours to complete one-way. On the other hand, you can choose to go all the way to red crater/emerald lakes, which is about the halfway mark of the crossing and make a u-turn back. The majority of hikers that day did the u-turn. I also did the u-turn. Most people said the highlights of the crossing is in the first half of the hike. I arrived there around 7 am by shuttle bus, and started my hike shortly after. I was back at the parking lot around 2 pm. I was fortunate that we had good weather during the hike since this area is notorious for constant ever-changing unpredictable weather. music credit to Veneox

The hike went up mount Doom (lord of the rings) all the way to the highest point: the Red Crater.
During the decent we had a view over lake Taupo and then went into a nice forrest

Offset against the cerulean sky, this active stratovolcano has a dark, conical shape and clouds bubbling around its blood-red crater like dry ice in a lab experiment. It’s the sort of volcano my son Edward would draw. Edward clambers on to the bus that will escort us to the start of our trek with a spring in his step.‘That’s Mount Doom,’ he says to the bus driver, just in case he didn’t already know.Edward has only just turned seven, but he’s already watched Peter Jackson’s The Lord Of The Rings trilogy and its prequel, The Hobbit. His bedtime reading is Tolkien’s The Hobbit – illustrated but unabridged. No wonder, given that his father is both a movie buff and a voracious reader. We’re attempting the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in New Zealand’s North Island (tongarirocrossing.org. nz). Apparently the best one-day hike in the country, it’s a 12-mile adventure across the Tongariro National Park. This is the setting for Mordor in the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, and Mount Ngauruhoe stars as Mount Doom, where Frodo, the hobbit entrusted as the ring-bearer, is tasked with destroying the ring. The driver pulls Edward back by the hood of his waterproof. ‘Hobbits aren’t allowed on board,’ he says, gruffly.‘You know this isn’t a child-friendly hike?’ says the driver, concerned. This time, he’s addressing us, not Edward.‘If it were easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy, it wouldn’t be called Mordor,’ pipes up Edward, before we can articulate an adequate reply.Iprefer glamorous heels to hiking boots any day of the week so I’m miffed to find that even a cyclone won’t put daddy and Edward off visiting Mordor. However, the delay buys us time to explore caves at Waitomo, where the luminous bottoms of glowworms create stellar constellations in the darkness; bubbling muds and jewel-coloured geothermal pools at Waiotapu; bird sanctuaries inhabited by threatened species of fluffy, nocturnal kiwibirds in Otorohanga Kiwi House; cruise the Lake Taupo caldera aboard a Romancing The Stone sailboat; stay in a homely, picturesque farm and visit Hobbiton, the film set of The Hobbit.Edward is totally at home among its undulating hills, enchanting vegetable patches, flowering gardens and quaint houses with hobbit-sized doors.North Island is often skipped in favour of South Island, but it needn’t be. The Tongariro crossing averages eight hours and comprises steep, rope-assisted climbs to the 6,200ft summit. It’s not a trek for the faint-hearted, but the gritty volcanic landscapes, scorched crater ridges, gem-coloured sulphurous lakes and tussock grasslands merging into forests of mountain beech and kaikawaka are spectacular.Never mind that I’ll be stiff tomorrow. Edward tingles with excitement and daddy is in his element.‘Even the hobbit made it?’ says the driver, congratulating us at the end of our adventure.Perhaps hobbits and children are not so dissimilar, after all.

Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of the most famous routes for hiking in New Zealand. I have been lucky to make it and see beautiful landscape in this piece of earth. he route takes you through mountain Tongariro and Mt. Ngauruhoe infamous as a Mt. Doom from Lord Of The Rings. Tongariro Crossing has 19,4 km and it is possible to make a side track to one of the mounts or both.
I did the side track to Mt. Doom, what is one of must do for the fan of LOTR.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is about 19.4 km and traverses a volcano. The total climb from the Mangatepopo (start) to Red Crater, the highest point on the track, is about 766m. Most of the ascent happens in two big climbs. This is a tough hike and need proper tracking or hiking shoes. Physical fitness is a must. We took 10 hours to finish the crossing.

Tongariro Alpine Crossing, New Zealand.
30 April 2016
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing in Tongariro National Park is a tramping track in New Zealand, and is among the most popular day hikes in the country. The Tongariro National Park is a World Heritage site which has the distinction of dual status, as it has been acknowledged for both its natural and cultural significance.
The crossing passes over the volcanic terrain of the multi-cratered active volcano Mount Tongariro, passing the eastern base of Mount Ngauruhoe which can optionally be climbed as a side trip.
The full distance of the track is usually 19.4-kilometre (12.1 mi).

Young Koori Deadly.m4v
TEN YOUNG KOORI students from Chaffey Secondary College attended the biennial Mungo Youth Conference at the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area last week.
The students from years 7, 8 9 and 10, were part of a national youth conference for young indigenous and non-indigenous students from across Australia based on the concept of kids teaching kids. The group from Chaffey Secondary College taught the theme of Initiation: Growing up - then and now.
Over 150 students, and educators, local elders and Koori mentors gathered in a purpose-built tent city on the edge of the National Park for three days to teach and learn about themes and issues both topical and ancient. While time was spent teaching other young people on each topic, students also participated in activities on archeology, geography and geology, indigenous issues, pastoral activities, visits to the visitor centre and the Walls of China. Games, singing and dancing were also popular.
Over a term was spent preparing the lessons and activities for the three classes taught by the group from Chaffey College. The students interviewed Koori elders, and prominent community members from the Mildura area, and then inspired by other young educators around the globe created a short movie based on the recollections of others and their own aspirations. The movie was used as the stimulus for the groups they taught to contribute their own aspirational statements on video.
Year 10 student, Jade Kelly said It was a great experience -- especially meeting other Koori students from around the region and getting to learn stuff from other students as well do our own teaching.
The group is hoping their nationwide collaborative project will inspire young indigenous people from across Australia to lift their goals.

Tongoriro alpine crossing
Apsolutly stunning, video diary of our day hike over tingariro alpine crossing, we caught the bus from the camp site we stayed at tongariro Holiday Park and arrived at the start half hr later. The hike took about 4.5hrs and was around 12miles long. The route was more challenging then expected but anyone with decent fitness will manage. The 360 degree views on the way up are stunning but noting beats the summit. The walk back. Down drags on a little but is quite pleasant. This day was 100% one of the best days we had in new zealand and whilst back packing.
