We are taking you up both of those peaks in this episode, first to the Klein Matterhorn in the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise.
We're going on a major journey to a high mountain peak.
We're taking you to the top of the Klein Matterhorn, which is the highest viewing platform in Europe that can be reached by cable car at 3883 meters high at the top of the Alps.
It's called Little Matterhorn because it's next to the more famous Matterhorn mountain that's even higher, 600 meters higher at 4478 meters high and we will get great views of the Matterhorn going up in the cable car.
After enjoying the summit, we're not going to ride the cable car all the way down – you could if you want to, but we've chosen to opt out and take a hike.
At the end of our 3-week tour of Switzerland, several of us looked back on this hike as the favorite moment of the entire tour, and we had a lot of great moments on the tour as you might've noticed if you've been following all of our Swiss videos. But there was just something lovely and ideal about this beautiful walk downhill through the wildflowers with mountains all around us.
Upon returning to town, we're going to walk over to the funicular that will take us up to the Sunnegga, a mountain high above Zermatt town. We will ride a funicular up and then we are going to walk down.
Reaching the funicular in a few minutes we notice out front they have a big map showing the different routes and different locations up on the mountaintop.
We'll be riding up this way in the underground funicular and then walking down the mountain. Notice how many other routes there are in the Zermatt area – it's huge.
Just buy your tickets from the booth here, no reservations necessary.
Then you walk through a tunnel for about 80 m. It's quite a stretch here going into the mountain. Notice it's not crowded because we're here in the month of May which is kind of the shoulder season – very nice time to be here, not crowded at all.
This funicular goes up through a tunnel in the mountain. You're never above ground – it's like a subway inside the mountain itself.
Easy hike down -- we show you both sides. With all the beautiful scenery and the lovely trees and the easy walk down, we find that the trail is beginning to level, off it looks like there's light at the end of the tunnel, we've arrived at the bottom, back in Zermatt, a gem of Switzerland.
This movie is a longer and combined version of two other movies we presented about this area.

SWITZERLAND: Rothorn mountain (3,103 m) & Sunnegga (2,288 m) [HD]
Rothorn Paradise (3,103 m) offers a spectacular view on 38 summits higher than 4,000 meters, and you can see the Matterhorn from its most beautiful side.
On the way to Rothorn is Sunnegga Paradise (2,288 m). It is a ski area that forms part of the Zermatt ski resort. The Sunnegga area catches a large amount of sun due to its unique topography, often despite the rest of Zermatt being submerged in cloud.

Sunnegga Zermatt hike down left side
We're in Zermatt, Switzerland starting off the day with another adventure -- up to the Sunnegga, a mountain high above Zermatt town. We will ride a funicular up and then we are going to walk down. This funicular goes up through a tunnel in the mountain. You're never above ground – it's like a subway inside the mountain itself. It was opened in 1980. From the top there are many different trails that you can take.
And there's a restaurant up here of course and a bar, you just have a drink, have a meal, or just skip it, as we are going to head right out and do some walking.
And so we begin our descent – we figure this'll take us about an hour and a half – it actually took about two hours, but it's all downhill and really quite easy and scenic.
You have a choice of direction in walking down from Sunnegga to Zermatt. You can either go left or you can go right down each side of this ridge. If you go to the left, that's to the south, it takes about an hour and 45 minutes. If you go to the right that's on the north side, they say takes about two hours. Well in this movie we went to the left and in the next movie we go to the right. Actually doing to the right it's a little bit more of a forested trail winding through a slightly steeper hill. If you go to the left as we did it's more of a gentle and straight slope and we'll have some forest coming up as you'll see, so you take your pick.
This early part of the trail was reached within about 15 minutes and it was so pleasant, quite level you got the rocky outcrop, you've got the hillside coming down with the grassy slopes and a few wildflowers – slightly above the tree line and were about to enter into the forest. It's a magnificent forest of Larch trees, the typical forest cover of this part of Switzerland, a very hearty and durable wood that's used for construction as well as firewood.
Getting into the characteristic zigzag cut of the trail, it's going steeper downhill but still it's been planned so that the slope is very easy for anybody to cover. You do not have to be in any kind of special physical condition to make this hike, it's really quite easy. It's going take you an hour and a half to two hours, and might help if you have a walking stick, especially when you're going downhill. Another trick when you're going downhill is don't try and put on the brakes, just go with gravity, go with the flow and let the hill carry you down.
How to go to Sunnegga SWISS Zermatt switzerland tourism video TRIP REPORT | SWISS |
Take the underground cable car “Sunnegga Express” to the observatory Sunnegga (2288 meters above sea level), which is the closest from Zermatt, and arrive in about 3 minutes. The ridgeline extending from side to side can be seen elegantly and you can enjoy the view of the Matterhorn (4478 meters above sea level) from a beautiful angle (east wall and north wall). There is a variety of hiking trails on the mountainside Lake Leisee. This is a must-see at the inverted Matterhorn photo spot in Lake Leisee. Matterhorn wants to see the beauty all day long. When the weather is nice, you can enjoy the view of the mountains of Jungfrau in the distance.
The Gornergrat Observatory (3089 meters above sea level) and the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise (3883 meters above sea level) can also be viewed for your free time sightseeing in the afternoon.
It is the most recommended observatory because it is close to Zermatt and has a good view of the Matterhorn (poster photos are often taken in Sunnegga).

Sunnegga to Zermatt - Epic Swiss Mountain Biking Descent
I AM REUPLOADING THIS TO SOLVE THE AUDIO ISSUES ON THE FIRST ONE.
This was my first run on my first day of mountain biking in Zermatt, Switzerland. Toni and Julia, my guides from Bike School Zermatt took me up the Sunnegga Paradise funicular railway and then we cruised downhill all the way back to the village. This was a big change from riding in the Perth hills where 5 minutes is as long a descent as you will ever see! The trail is also steeper than it looks in the video - you can hear my brakes squealing in some points - despite the big rotors, they got really hot pulling me up. These tracks are largely hiking trails, but mountain bikes are allowed (the no entry to bikes sign on one trail is not an official sign - it was apparently set up by a grumpy restaurateur...). Toni had a cowbell on her bars to warn hikers of our approach - although you will see that halfway down we did give a couple a bit of a fright! This place is amazing and the views of the Matterhorn are simply breathtaking. The bike was a Cube Stereo 160mm hired from Slalom Sport and I filmed on my Hero 4 Black (chesty mounted) and Hero 3 Black (seatpost mounted).
