TAKAYAMA, JAPAN: Takayama festival, amazing street food, and Hida beef!
We loved the Takayama festival, with its parades, gilded floats, beautiful scenery, and delicious food (including Hida beef wagyu). Takayama (高山) - also known as Hida Takayama - is a beautiful city in the Gifu Prefecture, secluded in the Japanese Alps. There are two festivals held annually in Takayama - one in the spring and one in the fall. We attended the Takayama autumn festival, which was truly amazing. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. I look forward to visiting again, even if the festival is not occurring when I’m there, because the entire area is stunning.
If you decide to attend the festival, book accommodations as early as possible, as hotels and other lodging sell out months in advance.

Takayama Spring Festival, Japan
The Takayama Spring Festival is the annual festival of Hie Jinja Shrine(Sanno-sama), the guardian deity of the southern half of the old Takayama castle town. As such the festival is commonly
known as the Sanno Festival
Yatai (festival floats)
The Spring Festival (April 14-15) is the annual festival of the Hie Shrine in the southern half of Takayama's old town. While the shrine is also known as Sanno-sama, the spring festival is also called Sanno Festival.
Likewise, the Autumn Festival (October 9-10) is the annual festival of the Hachiman Shrine in the northern half of the old town, and the festival is also known as Hachiman Festival.
The spring and autumn festivals have similar attractions and schedules. Each festival features its own set of about a dozen festival floats (yatai). During the year, the tall and heavily decorated floats are stored in storehouses, which are scattered across Takayama's old town (except the floats exhibited in the Yatai Kaikan).
Display of festival floats
From morning to late afternoon of both festival days, the festival floats (yatai) are displayed in the streets of Takayama. When the weather is bad, the floats remain in their storehouses, but the doors of the storehouses are opened so that visitors can still take a look at them.
Karakuri Performance
Several of the festival floats are decorated with so called karakuri ningyo, sophisticated mechanical dolls that can move and dance. Karakuri doll performances are held on both days of the festival at dedicated times and places. During bad weather, the performances take place in the floats' storehouses.
Mikoshi Procession
A portable shrine (mikoshi) is carried around the town in a parade during the two days of the festival, starting and ending at the respective festival's shrine. The mikoshi contains the shrine's kami (Shinto deity). The festival is the only time of the year when the deity leaves the shrine to be carried around town.
Evening Festival
In the evening of the first day (starting around 18:30 in spring, around 18:00 in autumn), the festival floats (yatai) are pulled through the streets of Takayama's old town. The evening festival (yomatsuri) is considered the festival's highlight by many visitors. In case of bad weather, the evening festival may have to be canceled.
The Takayama Festival is a very popular event, visited by several hundred thousand people from across Japan and the world. The festival gets especially crowded if one or both festival days fall on a weekend or national holiday.
As a result, hotels in central Takayama get booked out many months in advance of the festival, and it is recommended to make hotel bookings about half a year in advance. Neighboring towns, such as Furukawa and Gero Onsen can also be used as a base for seeing the festival, but going further than that will make it difficult to see the evening festival.

Takayama Autumn Festival & Food
So I finally arrived at Takayama, which is the main attraction of my Japan solo trip. Over there, I was lucky enough to participate and witness their annual festival at Takayama, the Autumn Festival. The festival is held around Takayama town. There were some praying events and celebrations going on which is very interesting to see. There were also many stalls opened besides the river selling all kinds of food and snacks. Also, tasting the loacl Hida beef is necessary!

Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall, Japan, 2019
The Takayama Matsuri (Festival) is regarded as one of the three most beautiful festivals in Japan. (along with Chichibu Matsuri in Saitama Prefecture and the Gion Matsuri in Kyoto.) The focus of the festival is the magnificent floats which are pulled through the strees of the town. ... The Floats are nomally stored in Yatai gura, special thickwalled storehouses with very tall doors, which can be seen in various districts of the town. However, the Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine has received special permission to display four of the eleven Autumn festival in the exhibition hall so that visitors can see them as they appear on the day of the festival. The floats on display are changed three times a year. hidahachimangu.jp/

City in Japan
Takayama is a city in Japan's mountainous Gifu Prefecture. The narrow streets of its Sanmachi Suji historic district are lined with wooden merchants’ houses dating to the Edo Period, along with many small museums.
The city is famed for its biannual Takayama Festival, going back to at least the mid-1600s, celebrating spring and fall with parades featuring ornate, gilded floats and puppet shows.

Takayama Spring Festival 2016 - Japan in 4K, crowds and a few nice spots
Despite being 5-6 hours away from Tokyo by train, Takayama is very popular with tourists (as far as I can tell just during one of their many festivals).
The train ride there is scenic enough but none of the other Takayama videos I've seen show just how obnoxious and fake this city is.
I walked 30km in one day there and reached the top of several mountains, spotting quite a few recently placed stones where they claimed a great castle once stood.
The golden palace seen at 2:14 is merely a hotel still under construction and that entire side of the town is currently constructing lots of other fake ancient shrines and temples which will surely be tourist attractions in years to come.
Maybe I'm being too harsh and just biased after a 6 hour stuffy train ride, my massive head-ache couldn't prepare me for the 4th grade recorder sessions and costumed men dragging giant floats but then stopping every 30 minutes to have a smoke and check their iPhone.
On the second day of the festival some more men joined with smaller floats and walked around town shaking them at each local business, even the McDonalds and DVD/porn shops.
My favourite spot was at the top of one of the surrounding mountains which claimed to be an ancient castle but merely had a relatively recent cemetery and child's playground overlooking the Alps and city (there was also a toilet, hotel and coffee shop near the top).

Takayama Spring Festival 2013
Although not part of our published tour programme, we happened to be in Takayama on the 13th April for the Spring Festival and this proved to be one of the highlights of our tour. Beautiful floats, traditional dress and a real family party atmosphere. Catch it if you can.
