TAKAYAMA, JAPAN - Are you looking for Things to Do in some amazing food to eat in Japan? Heard of the famous Kobe beef? Looking to In this video First World Traveller visits Takayama in Central Japan (the Hida Mountains) to sample the lesser known Hida Beef.
Hida Beef apparently originated from one genetically pure bull located in the Hida region many years a go, who was responsible for up to 39,000 offspring (whether this is true remains to be seen). The cattle is generally not bred with other breeds of cow which results in the uniqueness of Hida Beef.
There are countless ways of sampling Hida Beef, however In this video I try out the following -
- Hida Beef Sushi
- Hida Beef Skewers (at Sushi Dining Nob)
- Takayama Burgers
- Hida Beef Noodles
I am not a foodie (I don't like vegetables and most seafood!) but I LOVE MEAT - I could literally eat beef all day! Takayama and Hida Beef are ideal additions to your Japan trip in 2017 - make sure you visit!

JAPAN From Tokyo to Takayama
Tokyo to Takayama includes a boat ride across Ashi Lake and a visit to the fifth stage of Mt. Fuji in the clouds. Next you will see a traditional 150 year old Japanese Inn (ryokan) in Suwa.
Takayama is located in the mountains that are referred to as the Japanese alps where timber harvesting has been more important and profitable than rice farming. Sake brewers love the clear water in Takayama.
The village of Shirakawago in the Shokawa Valley has been given UNESCO designation because of the unique steep thatched roofs of the gasso-zukuri houses. The houses in this village were designed to cultivate silk worms on the upper floors.
The unique Miboro Dam, a rock-fill structure, provides electric power for Japan.

Japan Trip (2017) - Chapter 9: Takayama (Morning markets & sake breweries!)
Takayama is a town located in the Gifu prefecture. It is known for its yearly Takayama Matsuri Festival, where festival floats are displayed in the streets of the city. It occurs twice a year, once during spring and the other time in autumn. Spoiler warning: I'm not going to see it! Turns out it happens on the 10th. I've arrived a bit too early to Takayama!
With that said, there is still a lot to see in the city! Once again, I arrived very late in the city. I settle in a guest house, and this one is reminiscent of what we call a capsule hotel. You get a cabin with a futon in it and that's it! Also, damn that guy snoring!!!!!
Anyways, after that, the best thing to do is just walk around at night and go eat! The ramen that I ate there was very good. Every region has different noodles, and these ones, Takayama noodles, were more wavy and less thick. It makes you taste the broth more in my opinion.
During the morning, there are two morning markets at two different locations where locals sell food and other kinds of stuff. I went to both of them to see how they look! The first one is close to Takayama Jinya and the second one is in Miyagama. They both happen from 7 to 12 am.
While I'm going to miss the festival, at least I got to see another special market that only occurs once a year: the Antique Market! You can find a lot of old stuff there!
After that, I went to see ruins of two castles: Ayasaki's and Takayama's. It's nothing extraordinary though: there's only a few rocks left! They are now parks more than anything. You get different views of the city from the top of both parks!
Other than the markets and parks, you can also find the Old Town. This region of the city has a lot of sake breweries! I definitely tried some of it! It tastes sweet compared to the ones we have over here! It was a great experience!
Once again, I saw plenty of shrines and temples in Takayama, more than any other city actually. Many worship a multitude of gods. For those who didn't know, shrines are Shinto, and temples are Buddhist.
Remember that festival I was talking about? It didn't stop me from going to the museum to learn more about it (and wish I could actually be there when it happens!)!
My last stop was in Hida Folk Town. It isn't necessarily in Takayama, but it was so close by foot that I had to go! It's basically an old village that you can visit and you can learn more about the history of the people that lived in Hida during the 17th century.
That's it for Takayama! It was a small & beautiful city. Walking around is easy and you can get to most of places I went to quite easily from the station.
Enjoy the video log! I felt a bit emotional making this one (no joke!).

Day 87 & 88 - Takayama and Kanazawa
We couldn't have experienced Japan without leaving Tokyo and getting out to the countryside! We took a train North to Takayama. much to our surprise and enjoyment there was snow!
it doesn't take long to explore Takayama, it's a small town but makes up for it's size in character. We spent the day trawling the streets for local food and souvenirs. We finished the day in bar flame tasting many of the local sake!
Next day we had an early start taking the train to Kanazawa. This is large city with much to see. The highlight for us was Kenrokuen Park. Beautiful scenery with lots of the local people wearing

We did a walking tour of Takayama Old Street, traditional Japan. This place is under rated and a photographers paradise. The buildings are extremely well preserved, dates back to the Edo period. A Taste of Takayama
Experience Takayama's charming ryokans, sake breweries and street food with Intrepid Travel:
Far from the bright lights of Japan's bustling cities lies the mountain town of Takayama. This historic old town has one of the best food scenes in Japan. Stroll through streets of traditional merchant houses which are now home to cafes, restaurants and sake breweries (and be sure to stop in for a taste). Spend the night at a ryokan and enjoy authentic Japanese hospitality and traditional meals. The easy pace and quiet atmosphere will leave you feeling refreshed and ready to keep exploring the land of the rising sun.
Want to discover this quaint town for yourself? Visit Japan with Intrepid Travel.
Want to learn more about Intrepid Travel?
Intrepid Travel has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1989. A company that began with two bearded backpackers, a typewriter and a kitchen table now leads 100,000 travellers across the globe each year. And although we're a bit larger these days - with 1,000 local staff based around the world and over 800 different trips across every continent (not to mention multiple kitchen tables) - our mission remains the same. We still get a kick out of responsible travel, small groups and very (very) big adventures.

Best Kyoto Sake & Food Tour | Fushimi District Best Sake In Japan
Want to experience a rock star tour of the world's greatest sake district? This is hands down the best food & drink tour we've ever done.
Kyoto is the historic capital of Japan -- The name 'Kyoto' literally translates to 'Capital City and this charming slice of old-school Japan offers a stunning range of cultural heirlooms and tasty traditions. The most notable of these traditions is arguably the craft of sake brewing; the bountiful underground springs in the precinct contain some of the purest waters on the planet, and the Japanese wasted no time in transforming this natural gift into the wondrous elixir known around the world as Sake. On this tour, you'll have a chance to sample around 25 different sakes while learning about the historic Fushimi district of Kyoto. You'll tour a 400-year-old brewery and dine at a traditional Japanese restaurant -- it doesn't get any more authentic or memorable than this.
Japan Day 9 & 10 - Takayama
Day 9 & 10 of our trip visiting Takayama, gateway to the Japanese Alps. With its old inns, shops, sake breweries from the 16th century; Takayama is a rarity.
Day 3 - Tokyo to Takayama
I know, it's been a while since I posted. I've been under the weather, not to mention it takes me a good couple of hrs to edit these short videos :P
Today (8th of April, 2019) we jump on a Shinkansen and head to Takayama!
Straight from the station to the Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine, then down Takayama Shimoichi shopping street for some picturesque storefronts and sake tasting. From there we headed over to the Retro Museum where I took a BILLION photos, but don't worry, I only put a few here and they are at the end ;)
Takayama was amazing!
Next vid we'll see the markets before we head off to Kyoto.
