Upper Room Overview Tour, Last Supper, Pentecost, Jerusalem, Israel, Mt. Zion, Holy Land
See an overview of the Upper Room and all that happened before Christ's suffering and crucifixion!
Location
1. The Upper Room is in a second-story building in Jerusalem that commemorates where Jesus shared the Passover (Last Supper) with His disciples.
2. It is located directly above the Tomb of David and near the Dormition Abbey on Mount Zion.
3. It is also called the Cenacle Room, which means “dining room” in Latin.
4. On the first floor of the building is King David’s Tomb. It functions as a synagogue so a head covering for men must be worn. It is divided into three sections: (1) a small synagogue room (2) a men’s viewing area of David’s tomb, and (3) a women’s viewing area of the tomb.
5. The location of David's Tomb is likely just a memorial place as Scripture says he was buried in the City of David (1Kings 2:10).
Historical Background
1. The Upper Room is believed to be the location of the first Christian church.
2. Archaeological research reveals the Upper Room is built on top of a church-synagogue built by the first-century Jewish-Christian community of Jerusalem.
3. The location of the Upper Room has been the traditional site of the Last Supper since the fourth century AD.
4. In the 5th century, the church was referred to as Zion, Mother of all the Churches.”
5. The Upper Room that pilgrims visit today was built by the Crusaders in the 12th century as part of the Church of St. Mary of Zion. The Gothic-era columns seen today were from this time era.
6. The buildings around the Upper Room are remains of a Franciscan medieval friary from around 1335.
7. The Upper Room was transformed into a mosque by the Ottomans in 1524, and a prayer niche is embedded on the south wall, directed towards the Islam cities of Mecca and Medina.
8. The Upper Room building is currently managed by the State of Israel Ministry of the Interior.
9. It’s very likely that the Upper Room was used for more than the Passover meal. It could also have been where Christ appeared to His disciples after His resurrection, where Matthias was appointed the apostle to replace Judas, and where the disciples stayed while waiting for Pentecost. Some believe it’s also where Pentecost happened or began.
10. It seems logical that all these events shared the same Upper Room as the man who allowed Christ to use his large room for the Passover meal was probably a follower of Christ who continued to allow the disciples to use it.

My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

The Cenacle (from Latin cenaculum), also known as the Upper Room, is the site of The Last Supper. The word is a derivative of the Latin word cena, which means dinner.
In Christian tradition, based on Acts 1:13,[1] the Upper Room was not only the site of the Last Supper (i.e. the Cenacle), but the usual place where the Apostles stayed in Jerusalem, and according to the Catholic Encyclopedia[2] the first Christian church.
Thus the Cenacle is considered the site where many other events described in the New Testament took place,[3][4] such as:
the Washing of the Feet[5]
some resurrection appearances of Jesus[6][7][8]
the gathering of the disciples after the Ascension of Jesus[9]
the election of Saint Matthias as apostle[10]
the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples on the day of Pentecos
Since at least the fourth century CE a structure identified as the Cenacle, the site of the Last Supper, has been a popular Christian pilgrimage site on Mount Zion in Jerusalem. It is documented in the narratives of many early pilgrims such as Egeria, who visited it in 384.[12] The building has experienced numerous cycles of destruction and reconstruction, culminating in the Gothic structure which stands today.
While the term Cenacle refers only to the Upper Room, the site is connected to other sites of interest, including a large cenotaph-sarcophagus located on the lower level of the same building, said first by 12th century Crusaders to be the tomb of King David. However, most scholars consider this attribution to be incorrect; 1 Kings 2:10[13] says that David was buried in the City of David, an area of Jerusalem geographically disparate from Mount Sion. The Cenacle is also connected to the Church of the Dormition.
The early history of the Cenacle site is uncertain; scholars have made attempts at establishing a chronology based on archaeological evidence and historical sources. Biblical archaeologist Bargil Pixner[14] offers these significant dates and events in the building's history.
The original building was a synagogue later probably used by Jewish Christians. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, the building was spared during the destruction of Jerusalem under Titus (AD 70),[15] though Pixner thinks it was likely rebuilt right after the war, and claims three walls of that structure are still extant: the North, East and South walls of the present King David's Tomb. Roman emperor Theodosius I built an octagonal church (the Theodosian Church or Holy Zion Church) aside the synagogue (that was named Church of the Apostles). The Theodosian Church, probably started on 382 AD, was consecrated by John II, Bishop of Jerusalem on 394 AD. Some years later, c. 415 AD, Bishop John II enlarged the Holy Zion Church transforming it in a large rectangular basilica with five naves, always aside the Church of the Apostles. This building was later destroyed by Persian invaders in 614 AD and shortly after partially rebuilt by patriarch Modestus. In 1009 AD the church was razed to the ground by the Muslim caliph Al-Hakim and shortly after replaced by the Crusaders with a five aisled basilica named for Saint Mary. It is thought that the Cenacle occupied a portion of two aisles on the right side of the altar.[16]
While the church was destroyed sometime after 1219, the Cenacle was spared.[16] In the 1340s, it passed into the custody of the Franciscan Order of Friars, who maintained the structure until 1552, when the Ottoman Empire took possession of it. After the Franciscan friars' eviction, this room was transformed into a mosque, as evidenced by the mihrab in the direction of Mecca and an Arabic inscription prohibiting public prayer at the site. Christians were not officially allowed to return until the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.

The upper room.

The Cenacle, site of the first Eucharist
This is the cenacle - the Upper Room - of Jerusalem , where according to tradition Jesus celebrated the first Eucharist. Christians down through the centuries have worshiped here.
This is the place where Jesus transformed bread and wine into his body and blood and told the apostles, Do this in memory of me.
But the Cenacle is also linked to other historical moments - like Jesus first appearance to the apostles, and the arrival of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost
Archbishop Pietro Sambi
Former Nuncio, Holy Land
There, the Lord have instituted the Eucharist and Priesthood. It is the best place of the Church. From there started the Evangelization of the Apostles after the coming of the Holy Spirit.
Friar Eugenio Alliata
Custody of the Holy Land
It is not exactly the same room which is seem today, because it was rebuilt, maybe many times during the centuries, but it is according to the tradition in the same place.
Today, its not even a church.
What we see are the ruins of a church built by crusaders during the XII century. In the year 1333, the kings of Naples purchased the cenacle from the sultan of Egypt and then gave it to the Franciscans who built the first convent in the Holy Land.
In the year 1523, Ottoman troops expelled the Franciscans from the cenacle. Since then, Christians have been struggling to recuperate the property.
With the birth of the Israeli state in 1948, thousands of Arabs were forced to abandon their homes. Like other properties that belonged to Palestinians who fled, the Israeli government seized the cenacle on the grounds of an absentee property law that says they are entitled to a place that has no owner.
Since then, the Israeli government has kept it open for tourists and pilgrims, but it does not allow Mass to be celebrated there unless there are special circumstances, like John Paul IIs visit there in 2000.
Archbishop Pietro Sambi
Former Nuncio in Holy Land
It would be a gesture of peace and mutual appreciation, to resituate this place to the Christian community.
Benedict XVI also visited the cenacle during his trip to the Holy Land. There, he prayed for the unity for Christians and asked for help so that Christians in the Holy Land are not forced to flee the land of Jesus.

Jerusalem, Israel Room of the Last Supper is in the Crusader building. King David's Tomb is on the lower floor
Holy Ghost service inside The Cenacle (Church of the Upper Room in Jerusalem)
On February 6th, 2016, 30 pastors on a trip with CUFI (Christians United for Israel) were visiting the site of the Upper Room. After an exhortation by Pastor David (& Vicki) Shearin of Word of Life Ministries in Las Vegas, NV, and Pastor Mark (& Trina) Hankins of MHM in Alexandria, LA, the presence of God swept into the room, and the entire group was filled with the Spirit, as well as others looking on. There is one baptism, but many fillings, amen!
