Ross McMaster talks about his art
Contemporary Australian artist talks about his art with The Channon Gallery.
Ross is a painter, printmaker and book artist who use appropriated images and texts in a mixed media approach to art production. His subject is drawn from the questioning of his personal belief systems.
Ross's work currently questions the validity of organised religion (the church) within contemporary society as well as its political agenda.
In a time when we so readily and quickly demonise Moslems as terrorists and evil, I started to question the actions, in recent history, of the Christian faith and in particular Catholicism, its involvement in crimes against humanity and the relationship between the Vatican and Fascist dictatorships in the 20th century. I am also investigating The Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 with particular reference to the treatment of civilians during conflict and the Protocol Additional to the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949, relating to the Protection of Victims of International Armed Conflicts (Protocol I), 8 June 1977. My work explores how these conventions are being implemented in the face of the warcrimes committed in such recent and continuing conflicts as Gaza and Afghanistan. Ross McMaster
Since graduating from Southern Cross University in 2008, Ross has exhibited in group exhibitions in eastern states of the country and two solo shows in northern NSW.
His work is held in public collections, including the State Libraries of Queensland and Victoria, and various private collections.

SceneUnseen Installation Documentation
SCENE | UNSEEN
Benjamin Creek
In collaboration with Matt Blair
Scene | Unseen is a purpose-built interactive exhibition consisting of handheld projection devices, each with its own image feed which is anchored to QR coded coordinates located throughout the gallery. This allows the audience to navigate multiple series of images simultaneously within the same physical space. In effect the entire gallery is wrapped in images, a selection of which becomes visible when a coordinate is illuminated by the device. These images have been curated by three different artists, creating three exhibitions within one overlapping, physical space.
The images are only visible when the device is pointing at them, emphasising not only light's capacity for revelation, but also its relationship with concealment. The device functions therefore as a digital flashlight, revealing unseen material through the casting of light. This reflects some of the limitations of vision which have been highlighted by the transition from the physical to the virtual. By creating an experience that allows the audience to navigate digital images in a way that resembles navigating physical space, the work engages our spatial memory in ways currently unrealised in conventional methods of looking. Scene | Unseen harnesses our obsession with the visual in an attempt to re-engage with questions of how we can explore our digital world physically.
Scene | Unseen, custom software, Raspberry Pi s, Raspberry Pi camera modules, exposed negative film (DIY IR Filter), SD cards, HDMI pico projectors, infrared heat lamp, cordless charging ports repurposed from kettle, handles, wood, form ply, laser printed QR codes, adhesive, installed dimensions variable, 2013
