UK: LONDON: DUCHESS OF YORK TO PUBLISH AUTOBIOGRAPHY
English/Nat
The Duchess of York says she's setting the record straight with an autobiography after a flood of books published recently about her private life.
Sarah Ferguson's book, My Story, is a 306 page account of her life in the British Royal family where she writes candidly about the stresses and strains she faced.
It is published world-wide on Thursday.
Cynics may argue that this book is nothing more than a money-making scheme to help the Duchess out of her much-publicised debt.
The former wife of Prince Andrew claims otherwise - she wanted to set the record straight about her life in the public eye with the Royal family.
The disgraced Duchess of York, in her much-hyped autobiography, My Story, blames Buckingham Palace bureaucrats and even the British secret service for sabotaging her private life.
But in the 306-page book, the flame-haired Sarah Ferguson also blames loneliness, a history of self-hatred, betrayals by friends and the British press for her estrangement from the Royal Family.
SOUNDBITE:
Andrew and I had been discussing our own separation, not because we had stopped caring for one another but because I had reached the end of my Royal rope. For six years I had shouldered the demands of Palace life, I'd endured the constant scrutiny of the British press and a barely veiled hostility of the Royal household - the courtiers who run the show. Gradually, relentlessly, they beat me down. They were killing me by inches. It was time to save my life.
SUPER CAPTION: Voice of Sarah Ferguson
The book is one of many to have been published recently about the Royals.
But this book is bound to prove popular with the British public, who remain fascinated with the details of Royal lives, as it was written from inside the family.
SOUNDBITE:
There just seems to be an endless fascination with the Royal family. And I think, as I said, that the uniqueness of this one is that it's actually by a member of the Royal family - well, perhaps not a member of the Royal family, herself. And that's why this one is different and I think will sell.
SUPER CAPTION: June Formby, Manager of Bookshop
Fergie has been in the newspaper headlines constantly over reports concerning her huge debts and apparent inability to curb her spending, while another expose revealing details about her love live has also recently hit the bookshelves.

UK: NEW BOOK PUBLISHED DETAILING PRIVATE LIFE OF DUCHESS OF YORK
English/Nat
The British Royal family is bracing itself for more revelations about the Duchess of York's indiscretions, following the publication of yet another book detailing her private life.
Dr Allan Starkie, former confidant of the Duchess and author of Fergie: Her Secret Life, was Thursday signing copies of his book at a London bookstore.
A London bookshop was the focus for royal revelations Thursday.
Dr Allan Starkie, author of Fergie: Her Secret Life, launched his controversial book here detailing the life of Britain's Duchess of York.
The former confidant of the Duchess says he asked an intermediary to tell her that he was willing to stop the book right now and the whole project in exchange for an apology earlier this year.
But instead the Duchess took her case to court in an attempt to prevent its publication.
The book focuses on the relationship between the Duchess and businessman John Bryant over a five year period from 1990-1995.
Joint business ventures went sour and when the relationship ended Bryant declared bankruptcy while the Duchess faced huge debts.
Starkie believes it was her refusal to pay money, he claims, she owed her former lover, that played a key part in his financial ruin.
The collapse of Oceonics Deutschland, the international construction firm he ran with Bryant, resulted in Starkie spending five months in prison in Germany, before being released without charge and prompted him to attempt suicide.
Despite his ordeal the author claims he is not totally driven by the money factor.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I will be very happy to make money from this book, who wouldn't be, but it is not my motivating factor. You know when I sat in a prison cell, later when I was released there were other things that I wanted. I wanted people to judge what happened over those five years and naturally I hope to make money.
SUPER CAPTION: Dr Allan Starkie, Author of Fergie: Her Secret Life
Starkie says he believes the Duchess did not realise the importance of her position and expected modes of behaviour on marrying into the British Royal family.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
When you marry a royal prince it's kind of like winning the lotto (lottery). But the difference is that you become a role model where a lotto winner doesn't become a role model and because of that you have a responsibility, a very big responsibility. And I think that it's important for us to look at that and look at the fact that you just take somebody who is just a pal off the street and give her the opportunity to actually influence world opinion and for other human beings to bow their heads and say yes your royal highness.
SUPER CAPTION: Dr Allan Starkie, Author of Fergie: Her Secret Life
These latest revelations about the Duchess will no doubt cause further embarrassment to the Royal family.
Fergie has been in the newspaper headlines constantly over reports concerning her huge debts and apparent inability to curb her spending, while another expose revealing details about her love live has also recently hit the bookshelves.
But this book is bound to prove popular with the British public, who remain fascinated with the details of royal lives.
The Duchess herself is back on the front pages this month - the focus of a Hello magazine special.

UK: PRINCE ANDREW & THE DUCHESS OF YORK MEET AT CHARITY GOLF MATCH
English/Nat
Britain's Prince Andrew and Fergie were reunited briefly on Monday at a charity golf match in aid of motor neurone disease.
They posed together for photographers with their daughters the Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie at Wentworth Golf Course near London.
Fergie, the Duchess of York, clutching the hands of princesses Beatrice and Eugenie were first to arrive at Wentworth Golf Course in Surrey just south of London.
The trio had taken a day's break from their holiday in Italy and flown in specially for the day's tournament which was in aid of motor neurone disease.
Fergie founded the charity tournament four years ago and has personally launched the annual event ever since.
An hour later, after speeding from a birthday visit to his grandmother the Queen Mother in London, Prince Andrew also arrived at the club.
And royal watchers say Prince is desperate to please all of his family.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
He's got to please everybody poor man. His mother (the Queen), his grandmother (Queen Mother) and his ex-wife (Duchess of York). And I think he's done a sterling job dashing down the motorway to get here in time for this event. But of course he's very a keen golfer, so no doubt he wanted to, you know, be in two places at once and he seemed to manage it.
SUPER CAPTION:Judy Wade, Hello magazine.
Prince Andrew then aimed a carefully aimed ball above photographer's heads before taking off to tackle the course.

UK: LONDON: DUCHESS OF YORK TO PUBLISH HER MEMOIRS
English/Nat
The announcement that the Duchess of York is to publish her memoirs has received a mixed reaction in Britain.
Fergie will receive a reported 1.3 million dollars for the book, to be published by Simon and Schuster in New York.
But the amount the Duchess can reveal about her colourful life is restricted by confidentiality clauses she signed with Britain's Queen Elizabeth.
Fergie, seen here at a charity function in New York earlier this week, has let it be known her memoirs will not be of the kiss-and-tell variety.
The book is expected instead to focus on her childhood and the pressures of fame.
There will not be a detailed account of the break-up of her marriage to Prince Andrew, nor anything about her controversial relationship with Texan financier John Bryan.
On Thursday Sightseers at Buckingham Palace reacted with a mixture of amusement and dismay.
SOUNDBITE:
Well I don't think that I'd really want to read anything. If it's not a kiss and tell and there's no toe sucking in it. My great grand mother might want to read it but it will not be on my reading list.
SUPERCAPTION: VOX POP
SOUNDBITE:
Well I think it cheapens the Royal Family quite honestly. It cheapens the whole family.
SUPERCAPTION: VOX POP
SOUNDBITE:
Probably it'll sell a lot over here anyway. In America I don't think it will do so well. A book needs sex to sell in America.
SUPERCAPTION: VOX POP
The as yet untitled book will be released in the autumn. It will be published in the UK at the same time as in the United States and Canada.
It will help put a dent in Fergie's reported five million dollar debt.
As part of her divorce deal Fergie agreed never to write a book about the Royal Family which would embarrass the Queen.
Her spokesman has insisted this would not break the agreement.
Some booksellers feel there isn't much to be told that is not already in the public domain.
SOUNDBITE:
I think the main thing is she won't be saying anything new and she is not as popular a person as Diana. Those are the main two crucial points. People will be able to see the background to the story so we will sell a few.
SUPERCAPTION: NICK KEENE/BOOKSELLER
Other booksellers believe that it will not be a flash in the pan success - but it will have a long shelf life.
SOUNDBITE:
I realise that it's not going to be a kiss and tell book, but kiss and tell books won't be the best selling books in the long run. It's going to be a quality title that will run for a long time.

UK: LONDON: MADAM VASSO PUBLISHES BOOK ON DUCHESS OF YORK
English/Nat
The latest salvo in the attack on the Duchess of York's credibility has been unleashed in a no-holds-barred book just published in Britain.
Madam Vasso, confidant and clairvoyant to Fergie for six years, reveals in graphic detail her love affairs with two Americans, the breakdown of her marriage to Prince Andrew and her inability to conform to the rigours of Royal life.
Fergie's psychic tells APTV why she chose to write the book, what it exposes and the effect she hopes it will have on the Duchess.
This is Madam Vasso's home in North London where Sarah Ferguson regularly used to make clandestine visits.
Fergie came to regard this cramped basement flat as solace where she could freely open her heart to the 58-year-old psychic.
She came to rely heavily on her for spiritual and personal support - and all the while Vasso was compiling a databank of tapes and diaries in preparation for her book.
Perhaps the most shocking detail is the revelation that Fergie started her affair with Texan Steve Wyatt while five months pregnant with her second child.
Vasso believes it is quite understandable.
SOUNDBITE:
She's been five months pregnant, she feels ugly, she feel big stomach, honestly she don't feel very confident. But Steve is the opposite, he tells her how beautiful, how nice she looks, all of this and - that's what women need when pregnant, she didn't have from her husband honestly.
SUPER CAPTION: Madam Vasso, Psychic
Prince Andrew is revealed as too weak for Sarah and no competition for the rugged and confident Steve Wyatt, whom she was madly in love with.
SOUNDBITE:
Andrew is never there for her - each time really she needed her husband, husband is never there. And of course, the woman gets tired, someone else come along with a strong personality and that what he has, so she's not 100 per cent responsible.
SUPER CAPTION: Madam Vasso, Psychic
John Bryan, who called himself the Duchess's financial advisor during their relationship was a scheming and manipulative man out to further his own interests, according to Madam Vasso.
SOUNDBITE:
He's there just to use her - never loved her, he pretended, an actor. Disgusting - I feel ashamed of him - he came at such a low level.
SUPER CAPTION: Madam Vasso, Psychic
Madam Vasso insists she has not betrayed Fergie's trust in her. She says the Duchess will learn from the book not to make the same mistakes in her life.
SOUNDBITE:
I help her - I don't sell her. I don't feel guilty. She know that I do the book. I never did it behind her back. I told her I'm going to do the book and she know. And she never did anything because I want people to understand - Sarah she's a lovely lady.
SUPER CAPTION: Madam Vasso, Psychic
Madam Vasso now intends to set up a healing centre in her native country Greece - near the town of Delphi. She will keep her flat in London and insists she is not running away.
SOUNDBITE:
Of course I will make money. Nobody knows, I don't know what I will make but the book is very good and it will be the best-seller I am sure for that but it's not right to say I use this money for the healing centre - no!
SUPER CAPTION: Madam Vasso. Psychic
So much for Madam Vasso - what's her prediction for Fergie's future?
SOUNDBITE:
She will find someone nice and strong and definitely American (laugh).
SUPER CAPTION: Madam Vasso, Psychic
Madam Vasso says she has not spoken to Fergie for 12 weeks but she claims she fully expects to hear from her and that she will be happy with what she has written - with the aid of a British tabloid journalist.
Meanwhile she has a picture of Fergie to cradle as a memory - given to her four years ago.

USA: BRITAIN'S DUCHESS OF YORK HONOURED AT CHARITY BANQUET
English/Nat
The newly divorced Duchess of York has been honoured at a charity banquet in New York for her work with children.
The Duchess, whose organisation Chances for Children supports children's projects in the United States, received the Mother Hale Award.
The ceremony came as a British TV programme claimed a Romanian charity had not received money it was promised from an interview with the Duchess.
Hale House has been a home for babies born to drug-addicted mothers in Harlem.
Since it was founded in 1969 by the late Mother Clara Hale and her daughter, Dr. Lorraine Hale, more than one-thousand children have been cared for there.
The Duchess first visited the home six years ago.
It's not the only charity she backs in the US - her organisation Chances for Children supports children's projects throughout the country.
On Monday, Hale House reciprocated by honouring her at a charity banquet for her work with children and giving her the Mother Hale Award.
In her acceptance speech, the Duchess told the guests she had learned so much from the Hales and said she adopted some of Mother Hale's own techniques for child care.
Among these are encouraging a child to look it himself in a mirror to build self-esteem.
SOUNDBITE:
She believed that from their reflection, the gained self-confidence and she is so right. I have tried to instill that essential confidence in my children - I credit mother Hale with the success that her advice has brought to my children.
SUPER CAPTION: The Duchess of York
The Duchess' divorce from Prince Andrew, the second son of Britain's Queen Elizabeth, became final last week.
The couple, both 36, share custody of their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.
She has repeatedly expressed that her children - like children everywhere - are extremely important.
SOUNDBITE:
They remind me every hour of every day what is really important in this world - really important: our children - every last one.
SUPER CAPTION: Duchess of York
Her appearance in New York came as a British TV programme claimed a Romanian charity had not received money it was promised from an interview with the Duchess.
Granada TV's World in Action suggested the Romanian Princess Margarita Foundation, which helps orphans, was promised money from the sale of a magazine interview with the Duchess but had not seen any of it.
It claimed most of the money had gone to pay for the Duchess's three-day trip to Romanian hospitals and orphanages last year.
SOUNDBITE:
Someone in the Duchess' office was uncomfortable giving so little money to these charities and informed the Duchess and what she did was she turned around and gave 17-thousand pounds out of her own money to fly a humanitarian aid shipment to Romania. Now it is true that a mistake was made within her office about informing these charities about that 800 pounds (part of the missing money) and for that there is regret. But the Duchess has raised hundreds of thousands and (m) millions of pounds for children's charities around the world.
SUPER CAPTION: Jeffrey Schneider - Duchess' spokesman
The Duchess has recently come under heavy fire in the British press for her extravagance.
Earlier this year, she was reported to be deeply in debt and Buckingham Palace said the Queen would not bail her out.
The Duchess did not answer any questions at the Hale House dinner.

UK: LONDON: DUCHESS OF YORK AT BOOK SIGNING SESSION
English/Nat
The Duchess of York, fresh from a US tour to promote her autobiography, confronted her British media tormentors Monday - at a book-signing session in London.
The Duchess, known as Fergie, delighted hundreds of fans who queued up a glimpse of the royal writer.
But the visit proved a security nightmare for staff at Harrod's - the top people's store where the event took place.
Back in the lion's den - face to face with the British tabloid press - but Fergie came out fighting. She tried to silence the baying ranks of photographers by organising the photocall herself:
UPSOUND OF FERGIE: Why don't I start with this group, and then go to that one, and then to that.
Frequently derided for her dress sense, the Duchess actually won a complement from one of the photographers:
UPSOUND PHOTOGRAPHER: Beautiful. You're gorgeous.
UPSOUND FERGIE: Oh, something nice. That makes a change.
There was a moment's confusion when a Harrod's spokesman declared the photocall to be over - ahead of time.
UPSOUND HARROD'S SPOKESMAN:
Would you kindly leave. We have 19 restaurants. Would you go and take an early lunch.
It wasn't the new slimline Duchess the spokesman was addressing - but the press who by now had far outstayed their welcome:
UPSOUND HARROD'S SPOKESMAN:
Would you just hold the noise down, please, otherwise we will suspend this session. There is no need to shout. Remember, gentlemen, you are in Harrod's. Show a little decorum, please.
A long queue of customers snaked around the book department as people lined up to get the Duchess to sign on the front page:
SOUNDBITE:
We waited about two hours, but it was worth it. She's a lovely person. I wish her all the best for the future.
SUPER CAPTION: Tony Grieve, customer
SOUNDBITE:
I just shook her hand and said it was nice to meet her. She asked me if there was any particular person I wanted to dedicate it to. She said 'thank you for buying my book'. She was really polite and really nice.
SUPER CAPTION: Tea (correct) Johnson, tourist from California
The Duchess has a clear reason for being grateful - every copy that's sold will help drive down her overdraft which has been put at some 6 (m) million US dollars.
SOUNDBITE:
It's gone brilliantly today, excellent. We're going to sell out of all our copies of the book, you can see big crowds behind me, it's wonderful.
SUPER CAPTION: Keith Barnes, Fergie's publishers Simon & Schuster
The book may indeed help to ease Fergie's money problems. Whether it helps to salvage her reputation is another question entirely.

The Duchess of York joins The Queen in the Royal Box at Ascot
Sarah, Duchess of York has been welcomed into the royal box at Ascot as a special guest of Her Majesty The Queen. The Duchess was joined by her daughter Princess Beatrice and her ex-husband, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York.Sarah was last seen joining the Royal Family for the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex last month. After her marriage into the Royal Family in 1986 at Westminster Abbey, the Duchess spent six years as a civil list working royal, before being placed on what one would call a “leave” from royal duties after her separation in 1992.The Duke and Duchess divorced in 1996.Like the Princess of Wales after her divorce, Sarah was entitled to keep “Duchess of York” as a courtesy title. The couple have two children together, Princess Beatrice of York, and Princess Eugenie of York.Although divorced, the couple have remained incredibly close and been totally unified in the upbringing of their children.Embed from Getty Images The Duchess’s career as a royal and ex-royal have been plagued by controversy and scandal. An extramarital affair revealed in the tabloids led to her separation from Prince Andrew in 1992, and a tabloid sting damaged her reputation again in 2010 as she was seen on camera supposedly selling access to the Duke of York.It seems even through all the strife, the Duke and Duchess have remained a strong and united unit for the York family. After her separation from Prince Andrew in 1992, Sarah has been scarcely seen in royal circles. In fact, one of the only times (apart from the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales and The Queen Mother) she has appeared at the same event as the entire Royal Family is the wedding of Prince Harry last month. Many believe her reappearance in royal circles may be due to the Duke of Edinburgh’s fading out of royal circles. He is said to have a low tolerance of his former daughter-in-law.Embed from Getty Images Regardless, it was a wonderful sight to see the Duchess enjoying some time with her family and sharing some laughs with The Queen at Royal Ascot.
