Mdina, Malta's silent city. Mdina is a fortified medieval town enclosed in bastions, located on a large hill in the centre of Malta. This introduced Baroque designs within the city, and the Knights of Malta rebuilt the cathedral as well as the Magisterial Palace and Palazzo Falzon.

Tales of the Silent City of Mdina in Malta - A documentary video giving the history of Malta and in particular trying to answer the question Why is Mdina called the Silent City?
The history of Malta is fascinating, and the Mdina which was first built by the Phoenicians as a walled fortress, was central to many of the key events on Malta which had far reaching effects on history across the globe.
From the shipwreck of Saint Paul, invasion by pirates, the Knights Templar or (Knights of the Order of St John) and the first defeat of the Ottoman Empire this Mdina, once the capital of Malta has been built, invaded, rebuilt, fortified, abandoned and reoccupied over the course of history, and is now one of the top tourist attractions on Malta.

She was sentenced to death for her crime and was beheaded but was granted one wish before her punishment and was allowed to marry. A Visit to Malta: Valletta, Mdina, Rabat, Marsaxlokk, the Blue Grotto
Malta is an island nation in the Mediterranean of 122 square miles, population around 440,000.
The Maltese language is a variant of Arabic, but they are ethnically Sicilian, and Roman Catholic.
Humans first settled Malta around 5200 bc, emigrants from the island we know today as Sicily. They left behind a number of sophisticated temple complexes. Some of them predate Stonehenge by 1,000 years or more. They made a lot of sculpture that survives, including animals, and fat ladies. The population must have been pretty large to have built these megalithic temples. How did they do it, on a couple of rocky islands? Maybe there were once trees and fertile soil here, and now there isn't. These early inhabitants disappeared from the island by 2500 BCE, and for some decades, there were no humans on Malta.
Mdina, the old capital, is located on the highest point on the Island. The Phoenicians, the Bronze age seafaring people, settled this area and left artifacts. They were followed by Carthegenians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs from Sicily, Normans, Kingdoms from lands now in Germany, France and Spain, then the Knights of Malta, Napoleonic France, and Britain, until 1964 when the Maltese islands gained their independence.
Today Mdina is like an outdoor museum, and not many people live here. Right next to it is Rabat, which is a bit more lively. In Rabat, you can explore catacombs where Christians buried their dead for hundreds of years, starting in the 4th Century AD. They came in handy as shelters in 1942, when the Axis dropped more bombs on the little islands than were ever dropped on London.
There are lots of underground shelters in Malta. The one shown here is the family bomb shelter of the de Piro family, under their home, the Casa Rocca-Piccola. The current Marquis de Piro opened his historic home to the public in 1990, but he still resides there. His line of nobility dates back to the 17th century, when the Pope granted the family of his favorite lawyer the titles of Baron and Marquis. These are Pope's shoes, which are sent as a special sign of appreciation for services rendered.
Valletta is the current capital city of Malta, with a population of about 7,000, not including the tourists. It was founded by the The Order of St. John, aka the Knights of Malta, who were basically pirates, but they preyed on non-Christian vessels, and took non-Christian slaves, so their work was considered holy. They were granted control of the islands by the Spanish Crown in 1530, and used their strategic position in the Mediterranean to harass the infidel Ottoman forces. In 1565, the Ottomans under Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent lay siege to Malta with one of the largest array of forces ever seen. But the islanders resisted the onslaught, and after six months the Ottomans withdrew. The Knights were celebrated throughout Europe, and became very rich.
St. John's co-cathedral is the place the Knights built for themselves to worship. John the Baptist is the patron saint of Malta. He is supposed to have been shipwrecked here, whereupon he made converts of the inhabitants. The Master painter Caravaggio stayed in Malta for a time, after he'd fled from the Italian mainland on a murder charge. He was celebrated in Malta and made an honorary Knight of St. John, but within a short time almost killed one of them in a brawl. He fled and was expelled from the Order.
For hundreds or maybe thousands of years, Maltese fishing boats have been be brightly painted in yellow, blue, red and green, with two eyes on the bow. Nobody is sure why.
Malta has a notorious reputation when it comes to birds. Of course there are a few pampered pets. But many Maltese men love to hunt. They are known for shooting birds out of the sky — at least 100,000 a year. Despite it's being officially illegal, it hasn't stopped anyone, and the populations of many migrating songbirds are threatened. Even the Maltese national bird, the Blue Rock Thrush, have their eggs stolen from the cliffs by men lowered with ropes to reach their nests.
It was late December when I was there, and it was relatively warm and sunny.
The streets of Valletta were filled with people in costume. There were frequent marching bands of people dressed as Santas.

We are going to show you the Mdina, The Silent City in a bit different way. :-)
The karozzin is a Maltese traditional mode of transport consisting of a carriage pulled by a horse. It was once popular for general transit and is still used in ceremonies and as a tourist attraction.
Today, Mdina is one of Malta's major tourist attractions, hosting about 800,000 tourists a year. No cars (other than a limited number of residents, emergency vehicles, wedding cars and horses) are allowed in Mdina, partly why it has earned the nickname 'the Silent City'. The city displays an unusual mix of Norman and Baroque architecture, including several palaces, most of which serve as private homes.
An extensive restoration of the city walls was undertaken between 2008 and 2016. And yes, it is a Game of Thrones filming location from the first season.
Soon we will upload an another, much longer video with a most detailed walk.

~MALTA~ MDINA
Hi everyone :) Today we are in the medieval stunning city of Mdina .Mdina has it's origins at around 800 B.C. when a series of rubble walls where built around a high hilltop .Through the years it became the capital city of Malta till 1571 when Valletta became capital .The city however was very different than today .During the Roman times ,the city had huge Roman palaces and buildings for noble people .The city was also quite larger until it was partly downsized by the Arabs for battle reasons .After the islands of Malta where given to the Knights ,Mdina was quite quiet .However in 1693 along with many parts of the Mediterranean the city and the islands of Malta where damaged by a strong earthquake .In Mdina the cathedral was destroyed along with other Roman palaces .The Knights then rebuilt the cathedral ,the bastions ,palaces and alleyways. During the French wars ,Mdina was under a siege when French troops tried to steal the silver riches from the church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel .The Maltese then fought back and led to the French to leave Malta. After the British took over Malta until 1964 ,Mdina became a very quiet place .Nowadays Mdina is a popular destination in Malta with thousand of tourists visiting every year .Enjoy :)

MDINA
Mdina, Città Vecchia, or Città Notabile, is the old capital of Malta. Mdina is a medieval walled town situated on a hill in the centre of the island. Punic remains uncovered beyond the city's walls suggest the importance of the general region to Malta's Phoenician settlers.
Mdina is commonly called the Silent City by natives and visitors.
Mdina was inhabited and possibly first fortified by the Phoenicians around 700 BC. The Phoenicians called it Maleth. Under the Roman Empire Malta became a Municipium and the Roman Governor built his palace in Mdina.
Much of its present architecture reflects the Fatimid Period which began in 999 AD until the Norman conquest of Malta in 1091 AD. The Normans surrounded the city with thick defensive fortifications and widened the moat.
Malta passed to the Order of Knights of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in 1530 AD. Mdina hosted the public ceremony in which each Grand Master swore an oath to protect the Maltese Islands and the rights of his subjects.
A strong earthquake in 1693 AD led to the introduction of Baroque design within the cityscape. The Knights of Malta rebuilt the cathedral, to the designs of Maltese architect Lorenzo Gafa.
