Walking Britain's Oldest Road - Exploring The Ridgeway National Trail
Join Abbie Barnes as she explores the Ridgeway National Trail, 87 miles from Overton Hill in Wiltshire, across Berkshire and Oxfordshire, before concluding high up on the exposed point of Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire.
Across 5 days, she visited world renowned archaeological sites, met passionate individuals, and witnessed stunning far-reaching views. She began the trail expecting a long, exposed trudge along a grassy ridge, but came away inspired, and incredibly grateful that this 5000 year old track is still accessible and valued by those who use it.
Abbie hopes that by sharing her adventure along this ancient route she might encourage you to Spend More Time In The WILD.

Ridgeway National Trail public information film
The Ridgeway is a ridgeway or ancient trackway described as Britain's oldest road. For at least 5000 years travellers have used the Ridgeway. Originally connected to the Dorset coast, the Ridgeway provided a reliable trading route to The Wash in Norfolk. The high dry ground made travel easy and provided a measure of protection by giving traders a commanding view, warning against potential attacks. The present route was designated by the Government in 1972 and opened as a National Trail in 1973

Wondering the Ridgeway National Trail
The Ridgeway is a 5000-year-old track that stretches right across the United Kingdom. The official national trail begins at Overton Hill in Wiltshire and runs for 87 miles to Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire.
I have walked sections of it since I was young but have never before walked the entire trail.
I traveled down to Overton Hill and completed the walk over 3 weekends walking a total of 5 days, unfortunately, my computer wiped the first 2 days of footage after I was cleaning files from my Mac so this video documents my journey from White horse hill to Ivinghoe Beacon.
I hope you enjoy this film, my channel focuses on inspiring change by trying things and getting out into life not just walking but walking has a lot of mental and physical health benefits and it is something I have begun to incorporate into my life. I will plan to hike more trails soon.

Hiking the UK's Oldest & Most Challenging National Trail: The Pennine Way
I rarely know what to expect when I set off on an adventure and my trip to the Peak District and Derbyshire in the United Kingdom was no different. I must admit, I may have held a slight prejudice in thinking that UK wouldn't quite compare to the exotic beauty of other locations, but man was I wrong. I was constantly surprised at the amount of natural beauty and stunning views to be found along the Pennine Way, Britain’s oldest and most challenging National Trail. Setting off from the Old Nags Head in Edale, and every step along the 268-mile long trail to Scotland, the trail had plenty of adventure.
There are so many charms to the Pennine Way, it was a pleasure to hike. The day that stands out to me the most was the day we hiked from Low Force Falls all the way to High Cup Nick. This 17-mile day had plenty of beauty, capped off by one of the most stunning campsites I've had the pleasure of camping at. The views there will stick with me for a long time.
Getting to climb on world-class grit stone was quite the experience. I can see why so many climbers migrate to the Peak District. Friendly locals, great local fare, caving at Alum Pot, and the opportunity to climb at Stanage was fantastic—Peak District & Derbyshire offers so much more than just great hiking and I hope you enjoy this episode of Trackin’ Dirt as much as I enjoyed my time in England!

For our eager viewers out there, you may notice this is an old trip from 2013, but it went through a rocky road of YouTube copyright blocking of certain songs used. It seems the Tom Odell track on this half was the ultimate track that broke it in the end with audio becoming muted, so I've remixed it replacing that song and splitting it into two halves and hopefully it will work well for a while, and still retain the mood of the professional songs to accompany the different trip stages.

Walking The Ridgeway: Day 1
Saturday 9th June 2018
I'd booked a week off work so that I could spend five consecutive days walking The Ridgeway National Trail. My first long-distance walk and experience of backpacking!
Due to a poorly loaded rucksack and great physical discomfort, I'd be leaving the trail before Day 2 could begin. I hadn't enjoyed my day's walking and so, I questioned the point in continuing on.
Time would pass before I would return to the trail, with a lighter pack and all.
On day one, I walked a total of 25 miles, from Avebury to my first night's accommodation at Britchcombe Farm near Uffington. The Ridgeway begins at Overton Hill and I officially left the trail from the top of White Horse Hill.
I'm not pleased with the quality of this 'video'. Firstly, because I didn't film any footage as I was worried about draining my camera's battery. Secondly, for the poor audio quality of the narration. I'm using the same microphone but with a newer phone. I hope to make things better in each of the four videos that will follow.
Let this short story be a warning to people to seriously consider the weight and quantity of what you choose to carry with you.

Ridgeway National Trail
The Ridgeway National Trail is 85 miles long, stretching from Avebury in Wiltshire, over rolling, open downland to the west of the River Thames, and through secluded valleys and woods in The Chilterns to the east, finishing near Ivinghoe in Hertfordshire.
Reputed to be the oldest road in Britain, the trail follows the same route used since prehistoric times by travellers, herdsmen and soldiers.
The challenge was to walk the trail in around 7 days, in aid of The Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research. Our journey began on Friday 20th October 2006, travelling to Marlbrough for an overnight stay, setting off early the next morning.
The event was a success for Simon, who did a great job and managed to walk the 85 miles in just 6 days!! Well done Simon!!
I, unfortunately, had to pull out after 12 miles with a foot and hip injury. Despite this, I hung around encouraging Simon, and supplying the odd cup of coffee along the way.

roman ruins in britain Documentary 2017
ROMAN AMPHITHEATRES ARE LARGE, CIRCULAR OR OVAL OPEN-AIR VENUES WITH RAISED SEATING. THEY WERE USED FOR EVENTS SUCH AS GLADIATOR COMBATS, CHARIOT RACES, VENATIONES (ANIMAL SLAYINGS) AND EXECUTIONS.
About 230 Roman amphitheatres have been found across the area of the Roman Empire, however, in the UK only a handful of examples remain to this day.
The Minories eagle and serpent sculpture, described as exceptionally well preserved, goes on display at the Museum of London today. For those whose appetite has been whetted for Roman treasures, here are some of the best you can find around Britain.
Hadrian's Wall
An obvious one, but this is a must-see for anyone interested in Roman culture.
It runs for around 80 miles across northern England. Of the many forts and settlements along its length, Housesteads and Vindolanda are the stars, followed by Birdoswald and Chesters. Recent museum openings mean this is a great time to visit Hadrian's bequest to Britain
