Historical Background
1. Via Dolorosa means “The Painful Path.”
2. It’s the route Jesus walked as he went from His trial before Pilate at Antonia’s Fortress to His crucifixion at Golgotha.
3. The Via Dolorosa has 14 stations honoring the events that took place as Christ made His way to Golgotha to be crucified.
4. In the 4th century, Byzantine pilgrims followed a similar path to the one taken today but did not stop along the way.
5. During the 8th century the route changed, it began at the Garden of Gethsemane, headed south to Mount Zion, then returned around the Temple Mount to the Holy Sepulchre.
6. The present route was marked out by the Franciscans in 1342 after the Ottoman Sultan granted them authority over the Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.
7. Nine of the events are biblical, and five are taken from traditional beliefs handed down over the centuries.

Via Dolorosa: The Stations of the Cross in Jerusalem; The Painful Path or The Way of the Cross
Playlist: Jesus' Last Days on Earth, click here:
(With Biblical scripture) The Via Dolorosa, the Painful Path or the Way of Sorrows, in the Old City of Jerusalem is traditionally believed to be the route Jesus walked, carrying the cross, to the place of his crucifixion. The route connects the Antonia Fortress that was beside and overlooking the Temple Mount to Golgotha and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Over time Christians began to commemorate Jesus’ trip and various points along it, which became known as “Stations” of the Cross. See the Ecce Homo Arch, part of the gate of Herod’s Antonia Fortress. According to the New Testament of the Bible (John 19:5), “Ecce Homo”, “Behold the man!”, were the words spoken by Pontius Pilate when he presented Jesus to the people before Jesus was sentenced. You can also see the “Lithostrotos”, meaning stone pavement or paved with blocks of stone, where the judicial bench of Pontius Pilate was set, where Jesus suffered at the hands of Roman soldiers and where Jesus was sentenced to be crucified. Join our pilgrimage group as we walk the Via Dolorosa near the Ecce Homo Arch and to the last Stations of the Cross (Stations X – XIV, Stations 10 to 14) at the site of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and Golgotha (or Calvary). For Further Reading in the Bible: from The Last Supper, Jesus Arrested, Sentenced, and Crucified; Jesus’ Death and Burial; He is Risen: Matthew 26 – 28; Mark 14 – 16; Luke 22 – 24; John 18 – 21.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

The Underground Street of Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem
The modern streets of Jerusalem are no older than the middle ages. So where are the original streets that Jesus would have walked on? Is it possible to find them still today?
In this episode, we descend underground, beneath the modern street of Via Dolorosa, to find the original stones that would have witnessed the events.
