Rare mud eruption at Wai O Tapu Thermal
???? Rare mud eruption at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland south of Rotorua, New Zealand
Sat Jul 21, 2018
A rare eruption of mud and steam took place this week at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland south of Rotorua in New Zealand. While such eruptions at Wai-O-Tapu are uncommon they are not unexpected, GNS volcanologist Brad Scott said.
The eruption lasted roughly 40 seconds and was recorded by Thomas Rodda who drives a shuttle from Rotorua to local sites.
According to NZ Herald, Rodda was taking passengers to Wai-O-Tapu when he saw the mud spurting into the air. It took me a while to start filming. I was quite astonished to see it, he said.
GNS Volcano Information Specialist, Brad Scott, said the Wai-O-Tapu area was an area with steam and mud features. It's not common behavior but it's not unlikely or unexpected. Occasionally we get reports of trees covered in mud and maybe something has happened overnight.
Scott said the eruption was not a geyser as geysers were hot water erupting and this was caused by steam.
The area where the eruption took place is the Department of Conservation land. It is a public area and people should be cautious when approaching.
????️As far as I know it's never erupted before but it's awesome to hear, said Mericia Waqanimaravu, the general manager of Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland.

New Zealand Catalinas, 1950's - Film 4317
Summary: A film about the Teal flying boats, Catalinas, that operated out of Wellington New Zealand, flying to Sydney, Fiji, Tahiti, the Cook Islands and Samoa in the 1950's. Displays rather patronising attitudes to the Maoris of New Zealand and the people of the South Pacific islands.
Synopsis: A Catalina flying boat lands in Rose Bay, Sydney Harbour. A picturesque valley in country Australia. The Catalina has come to rest, its propellers still turn slowly, there is a modern terminal on the wharf in the background.
In the terminal, an opened Vogue magazine is held open and is being read, the person reading it shuts it to reveal the face of a beautiful young woman, she is the epitome of Vogue style 1950's; wearing a suit cinched at the waist and a small hat, she carries a small clutch bag and white gloves, behind her a window shows the nearby pleasure craft tied to the jetty, she stands, and with the other passengers they move out of the waiting room in which they have all be sitting. A loudspeaker is announcing procedures to passengers as they queue at the various windows including immigration and customs, the families, business and the woman queue at the windows, the woman signs a form she has been given. Over her shoulder a suited young man stamps papers. At another window an older male clerk clears the papers of a younger man. The young woman finishes up her paperwork she moves away from the window. A businessman wearing a white suit and smoking a cigar waits for his plane. The young woman resumes reading her magazine, she is now on the Catalina aircraft; she pushes back the window curtain, and looks out. The young man does the same.
There is an aerial view of the aircraft flying along the mountainous coast of New Zealand. An international mileage sign post at Wellington shows mile distance to such destinations as London, Cairo, Johannesburg, and Calcutta, a little boy gazes up at the sign, he and an older couple stand on the shore of Evans Bay, Wellington. The young woman looks down through her aircraft window.
An aerial shot shows the Catalina as it flies over the city of Wellington, New Zealand. People line the shore of Evans Bay waving to the descending aircraft, the little boy plays with a toy plane. He brings his toy aircraft down onto the water to land it. In the distance the Catalina lands on the bay. The little boy puts his plane down on the water surface and then lifts it off again. In the distant island of Samoa, a little Samoan boy has a model aeroplane, he too plays with it on the seas edge. He wears only shorts in the tropical sunshine, and as he skims his plane over the waters edge he looks up to the sky to watch an approaching aircraft, a jetty and wharf shed and many coconut palms are visible. The boy stands and watches the flying boat land. It runs along the water, the little boy stands on the shore watching. Sheep graze in the Waikato farmlands of New Zealand. Hot mud pools pop at Rotorua. The water of a geyser flies into the air. The young man and woman from the aircraft are at the tourist spot. The geyser shoots into the air. A geo-thermal bore ? shoots out steam front the earth. A wide shot shows that this steam is collected in pipes, and controlled by scientists to provide power and a supply of heavy water for the development of atomic energy, a Maori worker operates a release valve at the collection plant. The Maori turns the valve, the narrator says of all the Polynesians the Maori has come furtherest to adapting themselves to the white mans civilisation. The steam outlet pipe gushes with steam from deep in the earth. The Maori tends the valve.
In the Cook Islands a young male and female both pump fuel into the Catalina which is in a harbour, they stand on a floating pontoon on which there are at least six 44 gallon fuel drums, it bobs on the water, beside the pontoon and the flying boat there is a dinghy.

Mum and family ride the thrilling Rotorua Skyswing
This mum and family ride the thrilling Rotorua Sky swing. First they are hauled up high against the cliff and then let go to swing very fast backwards and forwards over the cliff overhang. This cliff drops hundreds of metres to the land below. Great fun and lots of screams! Rotorua is in the heart of the thermal district of the North Island of New Zealand. There is a cable car to get to the top of this mountain, lots of things to do including a lovely restaurant overlooking the lake. Many people then take the billy carts down to the bottom on a specially built fast track. Take the bus trip to Hobiton from Rotorua too.

6. Rio Tinto - Andalusia, Spain
The vast mines of Rio Tinto give a hypnagogic, almost martian landscape. Its growth has consumed not only mountains and valleys but even entire villages. This river has gained recent scientific interest due to the presence of extremophile aerobic bacteria that dwell in the water. The extreme conditions in the river are analogous to other locations in the solar system thought to contain liquid water, such as subterranean Mars. Río Tinto is notable for being very acidic (pH 2) and its deep reddish hue. It is metal solvent and surely not human-friendly!
5. McMurdo Dry Valleys - Antarctica
The McMurdo Dry Valleys are a row of valleys in Antarctica located within Victoria Land west of McMurdo Sound. The terrain looks like something not of this Earth; The region includes many interesting geological features including Lake Vida and the Onyx River, Antarctica’s longest river. The valley’s floor occasionally contains a perennially frozen lake with ice several meters thick. It is also one of the world’s most extreme deserts. Scientists consider the Dry Valleys perhaps an important source of insights into possible extraterrestrial life.
4. The Richat Structure - near Ouadane, Mauritania
The Richat Structure is a prominent circular feature in the Sahara desert of Mauritania near Ouadane. It has attracted attention since the earliest space missions because it forms a conspicuous bull’s-eye in the otherwise rather featureless expanse of the desert. The structure, which has a diameter of almost 50 kilometres (30 miles), has become a landmark for space shuttle crews.
3. Rotorua, New Zealand
Rotorua is a city on the southern shores of the lake of the same name, in the Bay of Plenty region of the North Island of New Zealand. Rotorua city is renowned for its unique “rotten eggs” aroma, which is caused by the geothermal activity releasing sulphur compounds into the atmosphere. Geothermal activity is at the heart of much of Rotorua’s tourist appeal. Geysers and bubbling mud-pools, hot thermal springs and the Buried Village (Te Wairoa) – are within easy reach of the city. This thermal activity owes itself to the Rotorua caldera on which the city lies. Waters of vivid colors, from yellow to orange to green which is partially possible to visit.
2. Fly Geyser - Reno, Nevada
Fly Ranch features two geysers, one of which is dormant. The other, Fly Geyser, was accidentally formed by a water well drill that hit a geothermal source, and continuously sprays hot water. Fly Ranch is private property and does not allow visitors. Fly Geyser, also known as Fly Ranch Geyser or the Green Geyser is a man-made small geothermal geyser located in Washoe County, Nevada approximately 20 miles north of Gerlach. Fly Geyser is located near the edge of Fly Reservoir and is only about 5 feet high, but 12 feet wide, counting the mound on which it sits.
1. Spotted Lake - Osoyoos, British Columbia
Spotted Lake is a saline endorheic alkali lake located northwest of Osoyoos in British Columbia. In the summer, most of the water in the lake evaporates leaving behind all the minerals. Large “spots” on the lake appear and depending on the mineral composition at the time, the spots will be different colors. The spots are made mainly of magnesium sulfate, which crystallizes in the summer. Since in the summer only the minerals in the lake remain, they harden to form natural “walkways” around and between the spots.
